Specialties

Bike rentals, repair, service and sales. Broad inventory and expert advice on everything bicycle: accessories, clothing, racks, trailers, and everything in between! Whether it’s commuting, recreation, fitness, family, touring, dirt, road, or recumbents, we have something for you.

History

Established in 1985.

In 1977, our founder, Paul Nicholson, a grad student in Champagne-Urbana, Illinois, bumbled into the bicycle business, following a bet with his roommate that he couldn’t open a wholesale account. Not wanting to lose, Paul placed a minimum order of $ 1,000 in parts to open the account, then opened a bike shop to get rid of it! From those humble beginnings, he began his thirty year career advocating the bicycle way of life. Paul and his family moved to Eugene, Oregon in 1984. He opened his first shop in Eugene on March 1, 1985. We now run two full service bicycle shops: one downtown, and another close to the UO campus.

Bicycle Way of Life remains committed to fostering the simple and elegant lifestyle that is symbolized by the bicycle, modern man’s greatest invention. We are dedicated to providing the highest quality service accomplished by keeping our expert, experienced long-term staff. Paul believes that you will not find better people at any bicycle shop anywhere.

Meet the Manager

Michael M.

Manager

Ever since his first attempt at riding a neighbor’s two-wheeler ended in a collision with a parked car back in 1956, Michael has been living a «Bicycle Way of Life». Along the way he has explored just about every aspect of cycling — from commuting to racing, to long-distance touring. (A cross-country bicycle trip that led him to Eugene from Pennsylvania, also passed through Urbana, Illinois where he first met Paul, his future employer.)

At 60, he still a daily commuter, and a recreational rider, and a successful competitor who can beat most anyone half his age. Michael still logs 8,000 miles a year. He is a skilled rider both on and off road.

Additionally, he has 25 years experience as a store manager at Bicycle Way of Life. If you’re interested in going for a ride up the nearest hill and need a companion or just want advice on where to explore next on a bicycle, give Michael a call, or stop in at the 556 Charnelton Street shop.
