Oregon Community Credit Union

I love this bank. The most important thing is that the people who work there are always incredibly friendly and helpful. I’ve been a member for the past 4 years and have never had a single problem at all.
They have a ton of convenient locations, ATMs all over the city (the one near me even doles out $ 5 bills, a huge plus), and great interest rates and other benefits of membership. I don’t understand why anyone would want to have an account with a commercial bank when Oregon Community Credit Union is right here.

I have been banking with OCCU since my parents opened a savings account for me back when it was U Lane O. Even though there are no longer any branches open in Portland, I’ve kept my money at OCCU because they have the highest interest rate for money market accounts that I’ve been able to find. Also, they’re in the credit union network, meaning I can deposit checks into my OCCU accounts at any credit union. Super cool and easy!
I lived in the duplex in the OCCU E. 11^th location’s parking lot for about six months in college. It was so convenient for my three roommates and I who all had OCCU accounts. We easily coordinated paying rent with one check at OCCU on the other side of the parking lot. We only had one parking spot (in our garage), so thanks E. 11^th OCCU, for never towing my roommates’ cars.
The only time I had an issue was when I was paying off my car loan. I had set up an automatic payment, but there were a few dollars (literally, like less than $ 20 or $ 30) that needed to be paid off but that did not come off with my automatic payments. I received a late fee, so I went in to this branch to see what could be done. The teller explained that because my automatic payment was greater than the balance, it wouldn’t go through (very frustrating). He also told me that he could not remove the late fee. But one incident in nearly twenty years of patronage has not deterred me from declaring my love for OCCU.
Also, a company I worked for has a storage room in the bottom floor of the OCCU building. A couple of times when I was taking boxes over there, I had to ask an OCCU teller if I could borrow the hand truck. They were always obliging (and trusting).
Please, OCCU, come back to Portland! At least set up an ATM! Please?

I was a customer with OCCU for nearly 10 years when I decided to change banks based on what I see as the decline of OCCU.
OCCU use to be a great credit union with knowledgeable and extremely nice staff. This was especially true before the change in name (from U Lane O Credit Union to Oregon Community Credit Union). The time of this name change and change in the upper management’s ideas on how to run this credit union seem to be the beginning of the downfall.
The first issue I noticed with OCCU was the transfer of the OCCU branded credit cards to Juniper bank. The Juniper bank was never helpful with questions about account fees and interest rates and OCCU was never helpful in contacting Juniper. The final straw with my OCCU branded, Juniper bank managed credit card was the excessive delay in processing my payments. Every month I would pay the card off in full and the payment (transferred from my OCCU account) would normally post on my credit card in 1 – 2 business days. Then account became slower and slower to post each month. The funds were removed from my account immediately buy would be held in ‘processing’ for up to 5 business days (payments under $ 500). Finally after waiting two weeks for a payment to post I called Juniper bank and was informed that it was out of their control as their was a ‘federal hold’ on my transaction. I spoke to OCCU about the issue and they informed me their would be no federal hold on my credit card payments as long as it was below $ 10,000 (not even close). The second time this occurred (two months later) they informed that it wasn’t a federal hold but held by their bank due to unusual amount sizes. I had been paying roughly the same amount for the last several months and asked to speak to the supervisor, the supervisor then informed it was a federal hold (contradictory to what the previous person told me). I canceled my card immediately.
The customer service with OCCU has also been on the decline. I was informed rather rudely that I would be charged a fee for cashing part of a check with only a savings account open. I informed the clerk that I had not been charged for doing this at any time in the past 6 months and asked if the fee was no. She told me it was not and that the previous had ‘screwed up’ their jobs. After arguing about the fee she said she would not charge me this time since I had not ever paid it before. This is an indication of the general attitude I had received from OCCU. The final straw was waiting 45 minuets to speak to an account manager about opening a checking account despite 4 managers being ‘available’ according to the teller, 2 chatting about their weekend and only one talking to a customer. I instead closed my accounts and switched banks.
If OCCU were to bring back their customer service to anywhere near the level it was in the past I would consider switching back. Otherwise I highly recommend avoiding this credit union.

I became a customer shortly after moving to Eugene for college; and now, nearly 15 years and over 500 miles later, I have absolutely NO interest in banking anywhere else. I’ll tell you why:
* The staff at this branch were friendly, helpful, and respectful, even to an 18-​year-​old opening a piddly little $ 500 account. They’ve been just as great every time I came in for deposits, withdrawals, new accounts, and managing an IRA. (Fortunately, my account has grown considerably since then.)
* Good branch hours, and the drive-​through opens 1.5 hours earlier than the lobby, which means you can hit it at 7:30am!
* Internet banking is easy, intuitive, and fast.
* Whenever I’ve had questions or concerns, the phone bankers have resolved them quickly and satisfactorily, and I’ve never waited on hold for more than a minute or so.
But the real kicker occurred recently — while on vacation, somebody charged $ 850 worth of groceries against my account. OCCU froze my card and called me. The agent I talked to (Allie) was helpful and understanding — she connected me to the fraud department and OCCU is crediting my account while the issue is resolved.
From the mundane to the messy, OCCU has treated me extremely well and I cannot imagine moving my money anywhere else.
