Meet the Business Owner

Joshua H.

Business Owner

Joshua Hirschstein, M.A., the director and owner of Lane Tutoring Service, started tutoring in 1983 and has focused on one-​on-​one teaching ever since. Joshua himself has tutored writing, literature, history, mathematics, SAT/​ACT prep, Latin, science, and the skills of successful learning to students in elementary through college level. He founded Lane Tutoring Service to promote and direct the work of other expert teachers who enjoy the one-​on-​one setting.

Joshua earned a M.A. in Education from the University of California at Berkeley, specializing in writing education, critical thinking skills, and learning theory. He earned a B.A. from Western Washington University, with certification to teach English and history. He worked as a tutor and teacher for six years in Seattle and Kathmandu, Nepal before moving to Eugene in 1989.

Joshua has directed Lane Tutoring Service since 1990. He and his wife, Maren, have two sons: Ari, a senior at Earlham College and Zall, a freshman at Bard.
