History

Established in 1887.

On April 22, 1887, a dozen young men gathered to discuss the creation of a YMCA on the campus of State University in Eugene City, Oregon. The first seven years of the Eugene YMCA saw intermittent growth. By 1909 the first YMCA building was erected in downtown Eugene at 1076 Willamette Street. In 1918 the «Y Hut» was built on campus, serving as a student union for 32 years until the Erb Memorial Union was completed in 1950.

By 1955, the Eugene YMCA moved to its present location at 2055 Patterson. The YMCA evolved from a community meeting place into a full fitness facility that served both men and women. During the 60s and 70s YMCA membership grew so quickly that by 1978 it was necessary to expand. That expansion has led to the development of over 80 programs serving children as young as one month to adults in their 90s.

Today, this YMCA is one of the largest service organizations in Lane County.

I love the Y, yes the building is falling apart not question about that… the staff are kind, they will answer your questions, and will bend over backwards to help you. Make sure you communicate with them they won’t will work with you.

It is an unfortunate situation that Eugene had a limited number of gyms with free weights. This is what lead to me having to join this gym. The facility is unclean and slow to fix broken equipment. The staff wanders around like hall monitors yet doesn’t enforce anything. The elderly clientele will crowd around equipment and chat and an employee will join them while the block the equipment, instead of moving the conversation. They fail to stop people who «circuit» train and hog equipment for long periods of time, only coming back to the station to tell you they need it but fail to use it within 15 minutes. The «sauna» in the men’s locker room could fall apart at any minute. Overall this gym is great if you want to walk around and chat or be rudely interrupted during your workout by a member who feels that they own all the equipment. If you live closer to another gym, join it.

This review is for the Summer Camp 2014. My daughter has had such a great experience with the Adventurers Camp this summer. Great staff, amazing trips, activities, crafts, science experiments, overnight camping… for such a reasonable price. My only regret is not coming here earlier.

I am shocked at how unprofessional the staff are. It is clear everyone knows everyone else. When you make a complaint about the person in charge of the daycare, on her computer and talking to other employees while children are sobbing in the corner, you are just laughed at. Please do not take your child here. It will be a traumatizing experience for the both of you.

I’ve enjoyed my decision of getting my year membership here. I’m just a normal workout kind of guy, and have really enjoyed having a YMCA within 10 minutes of where I live. I also really enjoy their Tennis facility.
My biggest reason for the 3 star is the price for the non-​student, the wear and tear of this facility, which truthfully needs to be overhauled, and just the capacity seems a bit low for the population of this town. I almost feel like we deserve a bigger YMCA. My hometown in Ashland Oregon has a bigger, nicer and much more new facility. I hope our community can come together and help the Y build a better facility.
God forbid Phil Knight gives a tiny bit to the community as well as sports eh?

What a true blessing the Y has been!!!
When I was laid off last earlier this year they extended my membership for 3mouths free of charge!!! They have some really nice equipment, classes and of course are doing wonderful things for our community!
It’s really well priced! I love this place!

I love our local YMCA! My younger son had three years of preschool there — two in the Rainbow Room (with Teri, who is, hands-​down, the best preschool teacher I’ve ever encountered) and one in the Friends Room (with Dawn and Delmi, who are also fantastic). My older son has had three years of after-​school YMCA programs at his elementary school. Both have attended summer day camps there as well. The cost is reasonable (well, as reasonable as child care gets, anyway), and my kids have always had a blast.
Preschoolers get swimming lessons three days a week! Older kids get to do all kinds of fun activities and field trips.
Of course, the YMCA also has a gym, racquetball courts, etc.
The place probably deserves five stars, but there are a few assistant teachers I haven’t been thrilled with, and I’ve had occasional problems with the billing department (once, they insisted I had not paid for a month’s child care, and even when I brought in my receipt AND bank statement, they seemed vaguely annoyed with me). Overall, though, the YMCA totally rocks.
