I pretty much know what to expect from a Super 8. It’s not the Westin. I get it. I’m in a small town, and I can adapt. I don’t mind that the covers have small holes in them. The towels were fresh and not worn thin or shredded. We did the bedbug check, and the room was clean enough. This motel got 2 stars because we were on a non-smoking floor, and we couldn’t breathe walking through the hall because of all the smoke. The motel was barely occupied! Fortunately, as soon as we were safe inside our room, we could not smell the smoke. It also got 2 stars because the front desk manager was very unfriendly. I called the first morning to ask the temperature, and she couldn’t be bothered to find out. She said ‘good question’ and estimated it was 35 – 40 degrees. My car said 26 degrees after I scraped the ice off the windshield. My hiking partner asked her the same question the second morning, and she said, ‘I don’t know’. At least this time she didn’t guess. Out of amusement, we asked the third morning. This time, another manager/owner was standing next to her, and she actually looked it up. I saw that this place gets a lot of hikers and hunters; looking up the temperature for us isn’t too much to ask! One last thing– the hotel faces some kind of high voltage electric lot. I wasn’t crazy about that, but we weren’t staying long. If you don’t mind smoke and don’t care about the front desk service, this is a clean place to stay as you pass through Erwin.
