Specialties
My practice focuses on sports medicine, joint reconstruction, and fracture care. He specializes in arthroscopic, as well as complex joint reconstruction procedures to keep patients of all age groups at the highest levels of performance. My sports medicine practice is focused on a customized approach to each individual patient, offering complete care of the injured athlete, from sprains and tears to broken bones. I regularly care for the child and active adult with injuries to the upper extremities (shoulders, elbows, and wrists) as well as the lower extremities (hips, knees, and ankles). Considering my extensive medical experience, I have managed and treated complex joint injuries and successfully guided these patients back to their peak performance.
My joint replacement practice consists of hip and knee replacement surgery. I is well trained in all aspects of joint replacement surgery and utilize minimally invasive techniques, as well as traditional joint replacement surgery when necessary. Given my expansive expertise in joint and cartilage restoration techniques, I can customize the surgery for what will work best for each individual patient. I am associated with the Scripps, Sharp, and Tri-City Health Systems. I treat patient throughout San Diego County. He is affiliated with treatment facilities in Encinitas, Carlsbad, Vista, La Jolla, La Mesa, and Grossmont

Dr Afra. is a widely respected leader in the field of orthopedic surgery. The former Chief of Sports Medicine at the University of California, San Diego, Dr. Afra has published in numerous professional journals and books and has presented at conferences around the world, where he is considered a pioneer in the study of shoulder, knee, elbow and ankle injuries in athletes and active adults. In addition, Dr Afra is a specialist in in cartilage issues and knee cap disorders. He resides in Solana Beach with his wife Johanna and their three children, Aviya, Mycah, and Jean-Raphael.

Dr. Robert Afra is the former Chief of Sports Medicine at the University of California, San Diego. He was named Co-Director of the International Patellofemoral Study Group Conference in San Diego in 2011. Dr. Afra completed his fellowship training in sports medicine at Boston University and has extensive experience treating elite athletes in ice and field hockey, basketball, soccer, and lacrosse. He was a researcher at the University of Hawaii’s Queen Emme Medical Center in the field of muscle and nerve physiology and was a surgical fellow at the world-renowned Barnard O’Brien Microsurgical Institute in Melbourne, Australia.
Dr Afra studied medicine at UCLA, where he also completed his surgery internship. Prior to this, Dr Afra worked at the Salk institute on an NIH research stipend.
In 2010, Dr. Robert Afra was selected by the Arthroscopy Association of North America, a première sports medicine society, as one of three surgeons to lecture to faculty in the United States and Canada.
