Platypus Kids

I came in with a bag of items I wanted to get rid of, in hopes of getting a Christmas dress and some new outfits for my little one. As soon as I walked into Platypus and said hello, the lady working gasped at my bag, like it was full of trash and me just setting it down on the floor was bringing down the store prices. She said «we don’t look at items in bags, it has to be in a tote.» No hello, but um ok. «Even if you had a tote I couldn’t take it we only take items on certain days.» You know because shes sorting through a tote right then, but okay you guys have a system. No need to be rude about it, though. Pretty disappointing to a new mom who got a day out without her kid.
I went to La Costa kids immediately after, and they offered me 75 dollars cash for my small bag of trash. Instead, I opened an account and got a cute Christmas dress and some wintry outfits for my kiddo, and still have a good amount of credit for next time.

Cute little shop. I like that they have both new and used items. Trudy was very friendly and helpful. The rewards card is nice too. The only disappointing thing was that the used clothing was a bit high priced in my opinion. I will be back.

I have to say I’ve been a bit disappointed in here lately. I’ve done all my consigning here the last three years and often chose to receive store credit. With infants that’s a great option since there are always new things coming in (makes sense since you rotate an entire wardrobe every three months or so!). I currently have about $ 150 and it is taking me sooo loooong to use it up because I feel like the clothes for toddlers — 4T are just not rotating fast enough. It’s a waste of my time to go and see the same things weeks after a previous visit, and worse since I feel I have a good amount of money I’m unable to use. I wish I could use it towards one of the great classes they have and love that that is an option, but unfortunately I work weekdays when they are offered. Hopefully there will be some changes there soon.

Love love love this place! They have the cutest children’s clothes here. I highly recommend this place for children’s clothes, dresses, shoes, bags, accessories, etc. Lots of cute things, definitely was worth the 45 minute drive :) and the staff is very friendly and helpful.

Great for books. I didn’t look at clothes or other items but books are in excellent condition for $ 3. They have the whole set of Hardy boys and nancy Drew. Great selection for 2^nd to 5^th grade books.

Very disappointing experience attempting to resell
I specifically asked to be contacted before selling to make sure I didn’t want to pick the stuff up and sell on my own
Received a phone call this afternoon with pricing, I was very disappointed in the pricing as I had an identical item as they had on floor and she quoted me ½ of what the one on the floor was selling for. When I told her I wasn’t happy with the pricing I’d come pick up my items she let me know that they’d already sold one of them. Someone supposedly contacted me (I never received a phone call) and told me how much and I approved sale.
When I got to the store she had a check waiting and my other item, for pick up. I feel very deceived with the entire transaction and will make sure never to shop there again.

I had not been in for a while. The first time I came in there was only 1 item I bought (I have 3 kids) but this time there were a lot of choice and more of the items I want for my kids. They run a little more expensive then la costa kids and they carry less of the high end items I buy but they had much more this time and I ended up buying 10 – 12 items. I like how things are organized and the incentive card to come back. I have been a regular at another local consignment store but i will stop by this one more often now.

Oh my gosh I found so much great stuff in this store. The two women working there were so nice and easy to work with — I consigned and then turn around a bought a bunch of great stuff for Christmas. Couldn’t be happier with the service, the inventory and how easy it was to do business with them.
Oh, and they clued me in on all this American Girl Doll stuff… They have a great collection of cloths and other items for them.

After a long, baby-​related hiatus from writing Unilocal reviews, I am returning with gusto. Newly exposed to the world of baby-​related stores, I am able to report on recent experiences. One thing I was advised early was to buy second hand since most babies won’t use anything you buy them for longer than a couple months. This led to us discover the wonderful world of children’s consignment stores.
We have had experience buying and selling items with Platypus and have been totally satisfied. Most consignment places won’t just buy anything. If you bought it at Target or it’s Carters, you may as well chalk it up as a donation. This is also a big complaint about them, but from where I’m sitting, that’s the whole point of going to a resale place. Everything on the shelves has been curated. I like that when I am browsing the shelves, everything is name brand stuff that would have been way too expensive for me to consider buying new (Ralph Lauren, etc.), but resale, it’s right in my wheelhouse. The toys have been fairly priced, and once our little one cares enough about books to stop chewing on them and actually read them, Platypus has the largest selection in town. The staff is very friendly, and we have enjoyed some of the vendors that come on location to do things like ceramic keepsakes of children’s/babies’ feet/​hands.
Platypus isn’t the cheapest resale store, but they are selling higher end items so that’s to be expected. Encinitas is lucky to have both Platypus and La Costa Kids in its limits.

Love this kids resale store! Well-​organized, very clean, competitive prices and vast selection of merchandise, especially boys clothes. I have two boys and love the selection of boys clothes to shop from. Other kids resale stores in North County hardly carry enough boys clothes (top brands) to shop from. I’ve noticed most carry plenty of girls clothing, so it was refreshing to see just as large of selection of clothes and accessories for boys just as for girls. The staff is very helpful too. I called in mid spring looking for wet suits for my boys and Cathy informed me of new consignments and different sizes of wetsuits they had received, so had my husband stop by after work that same day to purchase them. Great location too!

Great store, with lots of good quality clothes and things, plus the classes are wonderful. Great location, with easy access! Super nice owners too!

I attend the Mommy and Me classes with my 2 year old. She loves the classes, it’s a great environment for her to make friends and get used to structure similar to what they would have in preschool. It’s also nice to meet other moms with children the same age in the area.

Like a great dentist who’s done before you know it (and does the job right), Platypus Kids won me over.
Leaving the risk of selling things to Cr**gslist criminals, she’s got a good eye for what she likes and pays as fair as you can be in a resale environment. Her stock is neat, clean and categorized. Her clientelle (that’s you, Patti), are also easygoing and personable.
Great concept with the classes too.
When you say «La Costa Kids» or anybody else in Encinitas for that matter, I can honestly answer: «They’re nobodies compared to Platypus Kids!»
Decent parking, although on a split lot (behind a Jack In The Box), she’s just east of El Camino Real and Encinitas Boulevard.
Good vibe, unpretentious, good communication and a positive experience.

I love this place! We drove from RB and it was well worth the trip. I was able to get store credit for my stuff and there was plenty to spend it on. I will be back again and again!

This is a good little baby/​kid resale shop in Encinitas. The location is a bit hard to find the first time (behind a jack in the box), but its worth the trip if you have kids and need to find some good deals. My first trip I ended up buying three pairs of shoes, all of which were converse and stride rite, either brand new or barely worn. I paid about $ 8 for each pair! There is a great selection of baby clothes, lots of cute stuff. The toddler clothes could use a bit more added, but I’ve been able to find some great pieces. There is also a toy/​book area that seems to get new stuff added frequently, all in decent shape. I just got a 80 piece wood block set for $ 6! The prices are higher than going to somewhere like goodwill, but it saves you the time and hassle of digging through old stained funky stuff. Love it! Oh and the train table in the back is awesome bc my 2 year old can play while I shop!!! Genius!

We have had a wonderful experience with this store for kids classes, selling and buying kids clothes and books. My daughter is very excited to go to her weekly Toddler Time class with Miss Cathy. We have has such a positive experience with Denise and Cathy at Platypus Kids that we held our other child’s birthday party in the classroom at the store. Cathy was super easy to work with to plan out a party that our 6 year old and friends would love. Your time and money are well spent supporting this local mom owned business.

Love this place! The classes they offer are great! We have taken both the toddler music and painting and love both. My son looks forward to Fridays so we an go to painting class. They also have a great supply of books and toys.

THE best kids resale shop hands down. Here’s the thing — sometimes it’s just the service that makes a place super special and that’s definitely the case here. The owner has won me over forever because of her willingness to go the extra mile. I came in looking for those soft bottom hip hop shoes for my daughter (and I needed them like right now). She didn’t have her size, but actually called two of her competitors to see if THEY had the size I needed (she didn’t want me to pay retail). Unreal! I’m still in a state of shock. Her store is clean, well-​organized and peaceful… it makes shopping there a total pleasure. I’ll be back and I’ll be telling ALL of my mommy friends. Take a trip there — you won’t be disappointed.

I shop resale stores regualrly and was not very impressed. The store itself was nice and roomy, but very empty of real substance. I like the concept, kids store and kids classes, not unlike Kidville, but for older kids. I like the idea of a place to buy used books, but felt the prices weren’t any better than the Scholastic bookfairs that roll into the school every quarter. Unfortunately, if you’re going to buy/​sell used kids clothes, you need to have a good knowledge of the market. The buyers lose points for too much wash-​wear & pricing Mini Boden items cheaper than Children’s Place (that was waaaaay overpriced).
I shop enough to support multiple shops in town, and was saddened to see the previous review slam another shop in town, that has been in business for years and is also run by a local woman and Mom. La Costa Kids is smaller, but has better quality products and better prices. Platypus Kids does a good job filling the void that Cute as a Bug left, in the low-​end market. I wish them luck.

Look out La Costa Kids, there’s a new store in town! I stumbled upon Platypus Kids the other day and was pleasantly surprised to find the most spacious children’s resale shop I have ever found in Encinitas. The store is bright and spacious. They have a huge kids book selection and a ton of boy clothes (with no holes in the knees, can you imagine?). They also have two classrooms for kids classes which is an interesting concept. (I haven’t taken classes there, but the rooms look nice.) If you ever find yourself in need of kids’ clothes, this place is definitely worth a visit.
