The new owners at Gateway suck I went there to get some bacon and no one would help me at the meat counter although there were two people behind the counter a Chinese man came in and he went to help him and I was like I’m next and he waved his hands off at me to shoo me

Gateway Super looks like a new store. long meat counter wtih special prices for packaged deals, convenience items are stacked to the ceiling.(one can view all the aisles from anywhere, definitely a theft deterrent measure). grocery items seem seasonably priced. all wines, beers priced reasonably buys:deschutes«cinder cone red ale» 3.995.3% –slight bitter taste(hops?) *small selection of mainstream and microbrews on draught: –fast checkout, not many shoppers in daytime.

The meat counter is really great priced and always fresh. And they have meat packages! It takes the guess work out of shopping for the week or even the month. The reason for the 4 stars is the store itself(aside from the meat department) is small and some items have a «convenience fee» but you can definitely pick up dinner items. Oh and the guy from Arkansas behind the meat counter is super cool and friendly. (FYI– They take SNAP for the meat dept. and general store too)

This place has a great meat counter. The meats are all fresh and there is large variety. The prices are definitely worth my drive from Alameda. I’m a Southerner at heart and can find off the wall things like pork neckbones and turkey wings for my Mom to cook when she visits. The rest of the store is fairly basic but I’ll continue to make my way here to fill up my freezer.

In a neighborhood that needs a super market, this little market provides a great service. They have recently rearranged the store so it feels more welcoming and the meat counter is very good. It does feel dated but this the way markets were set up long ago. Ample parking but with limited hours. Get your shopping done early.

Great small neighborhood grocery. Cameliia dried beans, a million hot sauces, a huuuuggge meat department, tons of good looking greens. Everyone who works here is super friendly. Support your local market

THEPAST this place was filthy THEPRESENT and recently been«renovated»…and is even filther with a tradition of growing mountain-high piles of empty boxes outside that attract rodents. Take a look at the store window-total grime and filth! The health dept should shut them down! THEUPSIDE Though insulting, convenient for those in the neighborhood who are food captive and are forced to pay high prices for low quality. THEFUTURE North Oakland deserves better. There’s a new farmer’s market on Market St on Saturdays and a new small grocery/deli on San Pablo Ave across from the filthy place… perhaps better things to come…

Rustic. I think may have been a Safeway long ago, but now would be tiny for a Safeway. Other than greens the produce is not good. Otherwise a good, convenient, basic grocery store. If they upgraded their produce I’d be a big fan.

This is my neighborhood market. We shop there as much as we can to help support our neighborhood grocery store. And it’s not a sacrifice on our part – their meat counter is excellent and the prices fit very nicely with our current unemployment food budget. The folks who run the place are friendly and try to be accommodating. Just check out the mean counter, and you won’t be sorry.

This is actually a general supermarket but they have a big selection of southern style goods such as ham hocks, collard greens, and etc. The crown jewel of the market is the quality of meats they offer and the selection. For a mom and pop shop the prices are actually very competitive with much larger chains. They recently changed owners after 30 something years but I remember it was quite a show back in the day when you would rollup with a ton of groceries. The people that work there would pack a grocery bag with such speed that it would make any nascar crew look like snails.

this place been around since i was even born. my parents and my grandparents still often shop here because of the friendly service and affordable prices. the meats are always fresh as well as the produce. better here with price tags on the products, then going to the liquor store half a block down, without price tags on their products and get charged extra.=)
