Great selection of Mexican bread but very hit or miss. If you’re lucky to catch the bread as it’s coming out of the oven, then it’s heavenly. Most times however the bread has been out for a while and is rock solid. Also a good place to get your Mexican product needs, cecina, paleta payaso, boing, etc. The Rosca de Reyes haven’t been as good the past couple of years.

Had a craving for Mexican pastries the week after getting back from Tulum, so I ended up here. It’s really close to the train and has a very tasty, affordable selection of pastries. Not quite up to snuff with what I got in Mexico, but who’s surprised? No signs on anything so I’m just going to have to remember it all by color when I return, but that’s okay. Now I’m going to go fall into a sugar coma after eating so much pastry goodness!

Oh my Cono(cone)! A flaky Mexican pastry made in the shape of an ice cream cone with vanilla custard in the middle. I grew up with these when my mom and dad(when they were together) used to bring some back from TJ, Mexico. Since I moved here to NYC in 1999 I only had my memories and visits back home to Escondido, CA to be with family to bring back that oh so yummy taste in my mouth. I can’t think of the name of the bakery in Escondido, but if it’s off Grand Ave and next to the 7 – 11 that’s been there forever. I had a couple good ones and bad ones at Leon Bakery in the city, but with some research by asking local Mexican food restaurants I found Vallecito Bakery in Elmhurst/Jackson Heights(right off the 90th St stop of the 7) and its as close as I found to the real thing from back home in Esco. They even have chocolate dipped Conos in there sometimes. Although as you can imagine, some things shouldn’t be messed with. Some say the Cono was one of the reasons we ended up buying our first co-op in the Heights. Just this past weekend, I washed my car with the self service $ 2 carwash at the Mobile station and walked across the street to have my cono to make sure I was going to have a good day. Thanks Lord! So the other things worth mentioning, since it looks like I’m going to be the first to review this location is their good selection of other Mexican breads/pastries, a selection of chicharrones and in case you wanted to pick up Mexico’s version of bingo… La Loteria… in regular and jumbo size. So to recap I would say that I would give their conos 5 stars, their location itself 3 stars, so hence the 4 stars overall.
