Hong Kong Supermarket of Elmhurst

Hong Kong Supermarket is right up the block from US Supermarket. Hong Kong Supermarket is one of the oldest Asian Market here in Elmhurst, NY.
What you do not find at the other Asian supermarkets, you may find here. The aisles are much wider so one can freely move around with their shopping cart without any distractions. But they do not have many stocked items on the shelves. Notice lots of empty shelf space too.
Place is pretty much empty and not a lot of patrons for everyone is going to the other newer Asian Markets that have opened up. Their prices can be a tad more than the others.
Make sure you check dates on bottled/​canned items to see that they are not expired.
The quality of their merchandise have gone down. I stick with the dry goods.

This place is one of 3 – 4 asian grocery/​supermarkets in the area. Used to have a parking lot but now does not seem to have one. It used to be a lot better in here. We always use it as a back up now when we can’t find what we need next door or in Top Line!
The vegetables and fruit are extensive and inexpensive. Hit or miss on freshness factor which is why we don’t frequent as much as the past.

I am just so surprise that this store is still open. Most of the items in the store are either expired or rotten. I only come here for their tilapia because it’s live and the price is cheaper than other close-​by stores. The store is empty most of the time, and flies are all over the place.

This supermarket is not as busy as its neighbor supermarket, the U.S. Supermarket. Although both supermarkets don’t have the best workers, my choice would be U.S. because it’s produce are more fresh. A for effort.

Really, really pungent, even compared to Manhattan Chinatown market crawls. Simply couldn’t stomach it long enough to purchase anything.

This is one of four Asian supermarkets around the neighborhood and this is consistently the emptiest one. That should give you an idea of why this isn’t the place to go. Their selection is pretty on par with other supermarkets, their sales are good and certain things are cheaper than the others.
It’s slightly creepy and decrepit. It’s not exactly very clean and even my child complained about the dinginess of the floors (by the milk/​fridge area). Not only that but a LOT of the items are expired. I should have taken a photo but at least 4 items that I wanted to purchase were past it’s expiration date. Most of them were dry goods, so at least they would have probably been edible if not crummy tasting. But it makes you wonder how often they check their stock. The most expired item I saw was dated JUNE /​2014. That’s five months.
The only reason I went there today is I saw that they were participating in Small Business Saturday by Amex but when I checked out, I was told Visa or Mastercard. Well, no point in purchasing items that I could get elsewhere since I was headed to Sparkling for my next purchases.

This supermarket has really affordable prices on East Asian specialty foods. I stock up on staples like curry paste, sesame oil, and fish sauce at a fraction of the price of what I can get at Waldbaum’s around the corner from me. (Death to the overpriced tyranny of the Thai Kitchen brand!) They even sell gallon tubs of sriracha! Pretty much every goodie you seek is here – my boyfriend was excited to find his beloved rambutan and I was happy to see about 1000 varieties of bok choi. There is also a vivacious seafood section where a bold chef might purchase a live eel or frog. There’s nothing fancy about this grocery but I appreciate this kind of place near me with a parking lot. Though the store layout is quite crowded it’s easier to shop than the bustling markets in Flushing.

Looking to make that Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Korean or Filipino dish? HK Supermarket more or less will have ingredients you will need that you won’t find at your usual grocery spot. From lap chang to fish sauces to curry pastes. They have it here. Very convenient too with their ample parking lot in the back. This place is always the first spot I hit on my Asian grocery stops.
Cheap produce and fruits compared to most and even my Filipino anything is cheaper here than my local Filipino grocery store.
It’s quite dingy yes. Most workers barely speak English yes. Does the job you came here for double yes.
If you live near the area or live way too far from the city to go to Chinatown or cannot and will not brave the traffic and parking situation in Flushing then this should also be your spot.

THIS PLACE IS CLOSED!!! :(nooo i feel lost. what am i going to do now?! this place was THE Spot for me to get my asian groceries. It had parking and everyhting and just. grr. argh. I feel so completely lost now. not sure where to go.
Does anyone know if HK is closed for good or are they just remodeling? don’t tell me to go to us supermarket next door! it’s not the same and that parking lot is a mess.

edit: update. i don’t think it’s closed so much as they closed down the parking lot which is why i went here in the first place! :(I don’t know what to do now. off to find a new go-​to asian supermarket with parking lot

I dont know what is going on recently. there is no parking. it has been closed off and the inside looks pretty empty

While conveniently located, the poor vegetable selection and quality left much to be desired.

Place is currently being re-​modeled and it looks fairly decent inside now. The boba shop is no longer there so they’ve moved some of the fruits inside. The place still needs to be cleaner. The parking lot is a huge plus for this place.
I bought one item and used my credit card. I walked outside to look at the fruits but then decided that the fruits inside were better. I accidently went back to the same cashier and used my credit card for one item. She was like you can only use the cc if it’s over $ 5. Luckily she let me slide and I was able to use my cc. Awesome!!!
I think what’s good here are some of their vegetables. Much cheaper than the other supermarket down the block. The frozen edamame beans are cheaper at the other supermarket. I also like the egg roll snack, the one that comes in squares. I think this place is cheaper than the other. The chicken legs here are not that fresh in my opinion. I would stick with costco, same price ($ 0.99/lb).
I’d come here again.

Oh, Hong Kong (of Elmhurst), you’ve been my stable go-​to super Asian market for over a decade! Maybe it’s the sizable parking lot. Or maybe it’s the Thai dessert joint nestled inside. Perhaps its because every other market within a mile (except for Top Line
of course) has changed hands at some point (s) over the year.
Thank you for having a great selection of groceries from so many Asian walks of life (and not just Chinese).
So. why the 3 stars? Well, since you remodeled those many years ago and moved your seafood section to a not-​so-​well iced section of the supermarket, I’ve become weary of it. And, where does all of that melted ice go anyhoo?
Anyway, HK of Elmhurst, I hope that you will stay my go-​to place for all things (sans seafood).

The supermarket itself is fine, a little dirty. The fruits and vegetables are not cheap nor are they expensive. It has the standard choice of canned and preserved foods that you would expect at a Chinese supermarket. Nothing special thus A-​OK

Another decent, if not generic Chinese supermarket in the hood that will satisfy your need for cheap produce and fruit cravings. Like its other brethren in various parts of the City, HK supermarket has plenty of great choices if you’re looking for cheap stuff, or have the need to get a ton of fruit to fill up your fridge.
Again, this place isn’t exactly the cleanest place to shop at. But at least the meat selection here looks decent and there pretty much everything you need if you’re looking to put together a nice homemade Chinese meal. I also like the proximity to Taste Good Malaysian next door (the best Singaporean/​Malaysian restaurant in town), so it’s a great place to shop if you’re in the mood to do a eat/​shop kind of afternoon.

My go to place for asian groceries when I’m in the area. Parking is plentyful during off peak.
Lines move fast and there are many counters open.
Theres a little thai place in the corner near the front that makes a killer thai ice tea to quinch your thirst after shopping for food and making your mouth water.
Don’t know how fresh the meat and fish is… but looks un-​appealing, I personally would stay away.

There are so many of my childhood memories that include Hong Kong Supermarket. From excessively buying quail eggs to cutesy snacks and ice cream, I can practically remember where everything is… until now.
This supermarket has changed a lot over the years. They’ve gotten rid of the Fay Da bakery, inflated prices massively, stopped carrying some brand name items for generic brand names, shrank in size and became more dirty. I came here just about every week back then since my parents shoved me into daycare in the area (the most miserable years of my childhood) and my family and I would crowd over people in the market — even on weekday afternoons. There are no crowds here anymore. HK Supermarket has inflated their prices and their products can be more expensive than regular supermarkets.
I don’t know what it’s like on weekends but the parking lot during weekdays used to be PACKED. This place used to be packed in general but you can’t even find 2 people in an aisle.

One of the many Asian grocery stores in Queens, Hong Kong Supermarket is a great place to shop if you are short on some ingredients for your homemade sushi.
There is a fish counter here so when you walk in, there is a strong odor of fish… if thats your thing you are gonna love it here.
Also, you really have to know what you are looking for as most things here are not in packages that you can understand, unless of course you read chinese.
I was impressed with the aisle dedicated to sauces. Everything from soy sauce, sesame oil to siracha– all conveniently located in one overwhelming aisle.
I picked up some shrimp chips which were really tasty! as well as some lychee candies and crispy seaweed snacks.
If you are feeling especially daring, i dare you to try the crab candy. Its very… crabby!

I didn’t buy anything, but this seems like a decent place to get various Asian specialty imports — though this being Elmhurst, I’m sure there are better options nearby.
the huge cooking sauce aisle intrigued me the most. I saw quite a few that I might come back and acquire — gotta love dirt cheap chili sauce!

Is it dirty… almost all Chinese supermarkets are! ha!
I like HK supermarket. My favorite supermarket. They have everything I need that other Chinese supermarkets dont have. They have the Shrimp Chips I like. They carry Amoy brand oyster sauce that I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE more so than Lee Kum Kee brand. I noticed other Chinese markets dont carry Amoy. I dont know why. They carry Mung Bean Threads that also no one else carries. I dont know why other Chinese markets dont carry these essentials. I mean who doesn’t need good Shrimp chips, oyster sauce and Mung Bean threads!!!
Other essentials, tofu, egg noodles, Prime Foods brand dumplings, sugar free soy milk, Chinese sausage, ramen noodles, Vermont House Curry cubes… all here. YAY.
Prices are always decent! And cheaper than other places too, sometimes.
