Apple Barn Orchard and Winery

So great! Did a wine tasting with a fun & sassy German woman. She was a wonderful hostess at the orchard. They welcomed our group warmly even though they weren’t supposed to be open yet. Our faves were the Blackberry, peach & rhubarb wines. Go there for sure!

This is a great place. My wife and I found this on advice from a friend. The friend was spot on. We love the apples and the doughnuts. The caramel apples are simply the best around. We keep going back.

This is a really cute place! The wine by the glass is cheap and the tastings are free. The fruit wine that they offer is pretty sweet but also light and delicious. The staff was friendly and wrapped up a free glass for me to take home. I did not pick any fruit, but I’m sure that would be a fun experience!

The apples were great but the wines we bought were the worse wines we ever had and we had to dump them down the sink

My sister and i went there today and had a great time. We loved how quant and cozy it was inside. The apples are amazing especially the honey crisp, they also have a great variety of baked goods such as pumpkin chocolate chip cookies and cider doughnuts. They also have very good hot apple cider. There’s hay rides for the kids, you can pick your own pumpkins from the vine and there’s also a maze. I definitely recommend this place for all you fall lovers out there!

The wine is horrible! A group of girls and I went here and it was the worst wine I have ever tasted. They should stick to the pumpkin patch and apples!

We stopped by this quaint shop outside of Elkhorn after hearing they still had apples and made apple cider donuts. The donuts were perfectly made! And, they gave us samples of them along with the delicious hot apple cider. This is a very hospitable place that offers a variety of jams, mustards, butters, cider, donust, fruit wine, kitchen knick knacks, etc. I can’t imagine you wouldnt find something to taste or buy there!
Very generous with their wine tastings, too! I will definitely return!

Kind of out there along little roads, but worth checking out. The fruit wines were not my scene (more like Mad Dog than actual wine, with funky colors, oversweetness, and fruit flavors). Maybe 6 types of apples you can pick, and I think it comes out about the same as a grovery store in price. Lots of pumpkins. Delicious fresh cider donuts. Their cider is pretty good, hot or cold. Lots of parking.

This is a nice place. Pumpkins seem expensive, but you will be surprised what they call small and medium, and it will seem a bargain. However, this is not a pumpkin patch: these are pumpkins laid out on the ground to pick from. Also, there is no variety in the types of pumpkins. Cider donuts were good, but they could have had more cider donut flavor. We did not pick apples; they seemed a little expensive, but not excessively so. They have some interesting fruit wines that you can taste for free, but they were a little sweet for our taste. There is a maze, but there is not much too it.

Hands down, the BEST place to go apple picking.
Located in Elkhorn, WI, this place is a good hour and a half or so from Chicago, but it is worth the drive.
We always go during Apple Fest, and there is a ton for the kiddos to do — face painting, bouncy house, inflatable slide, apple picking, pumpkin patch, hay ride, helicopter ride, small corn maze, you name it! It can get a little crowded, but it’ has never bothered me.
There’s also fun for the adults too. There are some local artists selling crafts, and of course, there’s the fruit winery attached to the little store. They have 11 wines and let you taste 5 a piece. My husband and I shared and we each tasted 10 (the 11^th one — pumpkin — wasn’t available yet). It’s certainly not the best wine ever, but it’s fun to taste the fruit varietals. I think the bottles are around $ 10 a piece. We left with the Hardy Pear, Rhubarb, and Blackberry wines, though usually we head home with a solo bottle of Blueberry. I think a pretty tasty drink can be made by heating together the Pear and some mulling spices.
The price of the bag ($ 12 for a half peck and $ 23 for a full peck) includes any hay rides out to the orchard, and picking the apples right off the trees. Their golden delicious apples were ripe for picking, and were deliciously sweet.
Oh, also give their cider and apple donuts a try! Yum!
I’ve been coming here since I was a kid with my parents, and now we take the little ones in our family. This is such a great place that I know we’ll be returning for years to come.

Nice day trip… but no public bathrooms except outhouses. Had to drive back to Elkhorn to use the bathroom. Invest in indoor plumbing please. This is 2013. On a better note the apples were good and we enjoyed a very large, shaded outdoor seating area with deck chairs to relax after picking apples.

What a quaint place. A friend and I met here last year for some fall fun. They had apple and pumpkin picking, a hay ride around their farm, a charming little store, and WINE! Yes, we took and enjoyed the hay ride even though we are grown adults. At the wine-​tasting area they let us taste almost all the wines. Most of them were fruity, sweet, and quaffable (a wine word I learned recently– aka easy to drink). I most remember their apple wine, pear wine, and a pumpkin wine that I brought to Thanksgiving dinner. At their store they had apple cider, apple-​cider donuts, sweets, wines, bags of apples, and cute country-​style decorations. My friend and I both left here with pumpkins, apples, and 3 or 4 bottles of wine. Their prices were quite reasonable. If you’re in the Lake Geneva or Elkorn area, this is a great place you should definitely check out.

We went on Columbus Day and arrived at 3:00 as they were closing. Because we had driven from Illinois and I had 5 children with me, I inquired to see if we could do a quick pick. I was directed to a woman in a pink shirt who promptly began to avoid us. It became apparent that we couldn’t pick apples so we headed to the store to buy some apples, but it locked and closed too. During this time a local sheriff who was there to direct traffic nastily told us, «The website clearly states 3:00. We checked it 5 minutes ago.»
It was my bad for not knowing the closing time, but I was stunned by the way most of the staff treated me. Before we left their premise I phoned Harvest Time Apple Orchard – only 20 minutes away and they were friendly and kind. We had a lovely afternoon picking apples and playing in the orchard at Harvest Time.
Forget Apple Barn, go to Harvest Time in Twin Lakes instead.

Delicious wines and the line for the warm fresh doughnuts is always a ten minute line. delicious.

A nice little family operation — pick your own apples, a little «country store», a tiny wine-​tasting area, and fresh homemade cider donuts. Outside there is a little corn maze (or tree maze?) for kids, as well as an old firetruck for kids to climb on. It’s out in the rolling farmlands, and, being on a hill, it has a nice vista of several miles of farm and woodlands.
We tasted, liked, and bought the fruity apple wine, and we really like the donuts, which were still warm in the bags when we have bought them (twice!).
We will, and have, gone back for the donuts!
I would not drive all the way from Chicago for this place, but if you are in the Lake Geneva area, it is an excuse for a nice easy autumn drive in beautiful farm country.

What a cute little place and so friendly! We arrived a little after 4 pm on a weekday. Their wine tasting ended at 4 but they were kind enough to offer us a tasting. They were so kind and the tasting was free. Very delicious fruit wines. We purchased a bottle of blackberry wine.
They even cut up one apple of each kind for us to sample for free. So nice of them! We will definitely visit again when we come back to the area.

Fell in love with this place a couple of years ago. We pick apples every year and usually get our pumpkins there too. The store can get really busy, especially during weekends in the fall, but fresh apple-​cider donuts make up for the wait.
I considered myself a wine snob, but over the years I’ve come to love most of their wines. The Honey Crisp Apple and the Pear are my favorites, but the Blackberry is great in the fall with a heavier meal.

This place gets 2 stars for busyness. 3^rd star is tacked on because the fruit wine was fairly tasty.
It is not really a winery — more like a flocking ground for families to pick apples and pumpkins, which is fine, but it was CROWDED in late September.
The tasting itself was crowded and rushed, the worst of all four wineries in terms of atmosphere and my least favorite of the four wineries. I felt they were annoyed that I was asking for samples. The fruit wine wasn’t too remarkable. Got away with an only okay Apple wine but we did get a delicious Blackberry wine that we ate with Lasagna, the pair was awesome, the wine rich, sweet and yummy. We may have got another wine — a cranberry or something festive for Christmas but I cannot remember.
All in all okay to stop in at once, but wouldn’t go out of my way to stop back. Again, this place is for families and kids to eat fried donuts and pick apples. It is just a bonus for the Mom’s that they can stop and sample some wine real quick too.

I’m going to keep this review short… I figure that anything I say would mirror the other reviews.
This is an awesome place to spend part of a nice fall weekend. It was a lot of fun to walk around their property, to see th orchard and pumpkins. Their gift shop is very nice, and worth the visit.
I am a home brewer, and I wasn’t too impressed with their wines. Sorry.

We decided on a day trip up to Apple Barn Orchard and Winery this afternoon. It’s a neat little pick your own orchard out in the middle of nowhere. They sell you either a small or a large sack, you cross the street and start picking. Several different varieties were offered and the apple harvest was bountiful. Tons of apples to choose from. In a matter of 10 minutes, we had our large sack full and set off to explore other aspects of the orchard.
Inside one building is a store with all sorts of different things — jams, jellies, apple cider, pancake mixes, maple syrup, soup mixes, salsas, you name it. Toward the rear is a «winery» that offers free tastings.
About the wine — I am somewhat of a wine connoisseur and it is never a good idea to commence a wine tasting after having gorged on apple cider, apple donuts and apples from the field. With a sweet taste in my mouth, I commenced a tasting of all their wine offerings and couldn’t find a single one I liked. Each and every one tasted like two buck chuck to me. Needless to say, I was very much looking forward to scoring a few good bottles, but was disappointed and left empty handed. I’m not going to entirely blame the wine for this one, because I started tasting with an improper palate. Perhaps the wines are indeed very good, but nothing really struck my fancy.
On to other areas — out front, another stand offered warm apple donuts, hot and cold cider, popcorn, caramel apples, etc. We sampled a few items and found all to be very good. The size of the donuts seemed to be smaller than what I have found at other orchards though.
Pumpkins were aplenty and prices were very reasonable. $ 5 for a big ugly pumpkin with worts. Perfect. :)
Toward the parking area, a gentleman was hawking his Watkins products and a very nice woman was offering her Tastefully Simple wares. Toward the center of the facility, some vendors were selling homemade crafts, yard ornaments, bird feeders and the like.
Overall, a very nice afternoon was had by all. If we were in the area again, I’m sure we’d stop by. Not entirely sure we’d make the trek up there again though. There are orchards closer by that generally offer the same experience without the 90 minute drive.
