Presence Saint Joseph Hospital, Elgin

My father was admitted because of his sugar and blood pressure level not being good. He had to stay here a few days and the nurse who attended (she was Asian) was completely RUDE to my father and to us in the room. When she came to check on him she was very cold. She did not smile at all and she just wasn’t very pleasant to be around. She would ask my father questions how he was feeling and she would constantly cut him off and ask a different question. Honestly, if you don’t like doing your job that entitles you to actually care for the patient then why be there? My father had cold/​freezing feet for two days and no one would bring him a pair of socks. I had to call the nurse and ask for a pair of those slipper socks. She seemed annoyed and said she would bring a pair. We waited an hour and still nothing. I walked up tho the nurses station and the two people there just completely ignored me. Acted as if they didn’t see me when I know they did and just kept about their business. Went back to the room and half an hour later the nurse came. She didn’t apologize for the wait or that my father was never given a pair since day one. My father looked at me until she walked out and said «I don’t like that nurse at all!»

I had a 9:00 appointment in radiology (first appointment of the day), arrived early around 8:30, and sat until 11:30. They took me after every other person in the room.
The gentleman who conducted the MRI was very pleasant.
But, to top it off, I asked very politely & pleasantly if I should take a copy of the imagery to my doctor or if they would send it. I was told they would send it. 3 weeks later, 2 days before surgery is scheduled and my doctor calls me asking if I got the MRI done! They never sent the images to my doctor. I had to go pick them up and take them myself.
Total incompetence of the Radiology front desk staff. I will never use Presence St. Joseph again, for anything.

Nice nurse occasionally if you can find one. Horrible CNA’S. Not family friendly — no place for family to sleep except chair! They said they have a couple recliner chairs but they are always «taken.» Took a stroll at 6 pm and not one soul in the nurses station. Not even anyone to answer the phones!

My dad had a stroke and was transferred here for rehab. We spent 10 days there and were extremely disappointed. Could not wait to GET OUT. Alarms are going off constantly, with nobody running to see what is going on. Some nurses were ok many were BAD. Rehab staff were fair, but upon discharge, found out that out patient therapy through Centegra were much more helpful and kind. Would highly recommend you stay away from this hospital.

Terrible experience. I was admitted to the hospital on News Years Eve. (Wednesday)First day was fine. I was told I’d be leaving on Friday. Not!
The gave me heparin changing the bag when it was half empty. One bag I was told by the nurse expired, No wonder I wasn getting better. They woke me up at 1:00am in the morning telling me ithey had to fill 8 vials of blood. When I asked what the test for. They said the doctor was the only one that could tell me what tests. I told them I was needle phobic. I refused the tests. The next morning the nurse started yelling at me. She told me the doctor would be mad at her if they weren’t taken I still refused. She said if I didn’t take them she would have to tie me down. I finally gave in. Took the tests without knowing what they were for. I was very upset and crying. She didn’t care. Bed was only changed once. Some guy came in my room dressed in jeans and a flannel shirt asked how I was and left. I was later told he was the hospital assigned doctor. He saw me one more time in the hallway walking and said «looks good».
That was the extent of my visits with him. The hospital charged me over $ 600.00 for that service. The night nurse came in and said she heard I was a difficult patient. Great. She was so crabby. She took my temperature in the ear. Missing the hole in your ear. Ended up with a sore in my ear. How hard is to take a temperature? She was mad because my floor was short handed and she had to work there. I ended up being at the hospital for five days. Till Monday morning the best nurse came in told me if I was willing to take a certain medicine I could go home. Why didn’t the so called doctor tell me about this medicines? I was finally released out of my prison!!,

This place is dangerous. The staff and resources have been cut so badly, the conditions are unsafe. When you walk down the hallway every call light is illuminated and there are alarms coming from every room. Your probably think I’m exaggerating. Come and see.
So why didn’t we leave. Well its easy to rationalize that things are not that bad. The staff has all kinds of excuses. But in retrospect we should have left. Instead we opted to supervise the staff round the clock. Mistake after mistake by the staff were avoided by our vigilance.
We forced them to change linen once a day by striping the bed ourselves after we discovered the bed had not been changed for over two days. The nurses would routinely arrive ready to administer medication based on old instructions. We would have have find the new instructions. Scarry.
I have been to many hospitals recently and unfortunately. For the most part they have been good to wonderful. This place was such an unbelievable contrast.
I believe that this place is full of good people being brought down by a terrible administration.
Go somewhere else for your healthcare

Thay did a good job on surgery and the first day. But than thy stopped coming in so often

An absolutely horrible and life changing experience there. When the patient liaison was contacted in good faith in hopes of a simple resolution, the «don’t sue me» stance fully kicked in.
Written communication was largely ignored until they finally did have a response of throwing up an attorney blanket to hide behind. I couldn’t afford an attorney and the damages were deemed to likely be insufficient for one to want to take the case on contingency.
Add to that, a discovery was recently made that my medical records were released either by accident or on purpose in what seems to be a direct violation of the HIPAA laws.
Historically, instead of working with Sherman Hospital when they announced they were planning a relocation from Elgin’s east side to the west side, and a mere couple miles from Provena, they lawyered up on that occasion too in a failed attempt to bar the move.
Calling one’s self a Christian faith-​based institution and actually acting like one seems, in my and other people I’ve spoken to opinions, to be a problem for Provena Saint Joseph Hospital in Elgin. Every time I see one of their billboards citing «see what a difference faith can make» I get that puke feeling in the back of my throat.
I advise in the event you need a hospital in Elgin, even if you’re in an ambulance, go to Sherman Health!
