Don’s 66 Service has been in business for over 60 years! Serving its customers of Northeast Iowa with fuel, light automotive work, automotive tires, agricultural tires, wrecker service, and mobile tire service.

History

Established in 1950.

The current building was erected in the mid 1950s after Don Fauser purchased the business. Fauser then sold the business to Don Sutter a few years later. Sutter operated the business for about 40 years before selling to Frank Hill. Hill continued the business under Dons name until 2014 when he sold to Alex Popenhagen. Popenhagen kept with tradition and continued as Don’s 66 Service. For over 60 years we have been located at the corner of Center and Fremont Streets in Elgin, IA serving our loyal customers with nearly all of their automotive needs.

A lifelong Elgin resident, my first job (age 13) was working for Don Sutter at Don’s 66. I graduated from Valley High School before attending Kirkwood Community College to study automotive technology. After Kirkwood I realized I had a different calling, I attended the University of Iowa and became a Paramedic Specialist. After 8 years in EMS an opportunity presented itself, I returned to the automotive world and purchased the station from Frank Hill. My wife, Amy, and I continue to live in Elgin with our 5 daughters.
