The University of Texas

This location is actually off-​campus and not located in the typical area you would associate UTEP with. This campus is reserved more for the health sciences and houses the Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Speech Language Pathology, Pharmacy, and some nursing classes.
Mainly it’s where I’ve been spending night and day, literally! But it’s great because there is an outdoor courtyard that is great for studying/​reaading. The parking is great and you don’t even need a permit to find parking near the building.
A down side is that not all the doors open unless you have access and you’ll need to to go into the building from the main entrance… good thing the PT program gets you VIP access to the doors! wooo!
The building also houses the offices for professors and simulation labs. The building is a little old but it actually has some great historic qualities that it offers to El Paso. It was actually one of the main hospitals back in the day and you can tell when you go into the basement. We have our cadaver lab down there and it really has a hospital feel… beware of the ghosts that live down there ;-)

It is a pretty campus with very impressive buildings that tower over students and visitors. I do not like the fact that it is located on a hill and the designers of the campus should have taken this into consideration. I think that people should come here expecting to succeed and rack up more student loan debt.

So far I it’s been a nice ride. It’s business department needs work though. The Accounting section is horrible and you will be guaranteed to fail.

I give it two stars because it’s at least somewhat affordable compared to other universities. Depending on who you are, what you do, and what you’re here for, the strengths might outweight the weaknesses. I think for the grand majority though, that is not the case.
Most of the funding seems to go towards athletics. The debate team is horribly underfunded that they only go to local tournaments, whereas EPCC goes all over the nation. The school is always building new facilities and expanding outward which makes Mesa quite a pain for the average El Pasoan. Most students can’t afford the triple digit parking fees, which is so much more than you’ll see in other schools around the nation. It’s ridiculous.
Scholarships are only available for high school students in the top 10% so if you have great extracurriculars but GPA isn’t the best, then sucks for you because that’s what UTEP thinks is most important.
I went here for one semester, then went to EPCC where I took advantange of all of the opportunities they had for students and this has changed my life. I transferred out of EPCC to a private university in Virginia with pretty much a FULL RIDE because of all of the organizations and support in EPCC. I won a fellowship funding my schooling till I finish my masters at Yale, all thanks to EPCC and my undergraduate university in Virginia.
UTEP does not know how to take advantage of its student capital which is what could really make the school great.
But at least you have a well funded sports team and a garage, right?

Founded in 1914 as The Texas State School of Mines and Metallurgy, a mineshaft still exists on this desert campus. Campus is composed of buildings of Bhutanese architecture, with massive sloping walls and overhanging roofs. I’m a fan of this University, especially since it is the only major University in El Paso.
