It’s 1 a.m. and we just finished washing dishes. We are soaked, tired and all we want is a bit of comfort food before we both go our separate ways and call it a night. I suggest the usual suspects, Chico’s, Village Inn, but my friend quickly dismisses and simply says«we’re going to the inn». I follow him in the car, listening to some salsa tunes(closest thing i get to going to a bar on saturdays nowadays) when we pull up to this hole-in-the-wall place. Hamburger Inn as the sign boasts is open 24 hrs. a day. When we get off i quickly tell him I’m not in the mood for a burger, he just kinda looks at me and shrugs his shoulders as we walk into the establishment. We are happily greeted by the gentlemen in front of the flat top and fryers and what appears to be the only waitress for the night. We go to sit in the counter and we are given a menu. My buddy doesn’t even glance at it, and when our waitress comes around he just says a few words. Menudo, «con todo» and a burrito egg, bacon, and chorizo. A little lost in my own world and not wanting to keep our lovely server waiting I decide to order the same thing, with a coca as a drink. The cook asks us how our day was, says he’s heard of the catering company and smiles as he says if we need any cooks for the place. The place feels homie, and although its my first time here, i feel like I’m another one of the regulars. They bring out two pipping hot menudo bowls, put the toasted and buttered bread between us and bring out all the regular condiments. After a couple spoons of oregano, chili pepper flakes, salt and lime i dig into the menudo, and i feel as if though i just commited a sin. In my head nothing beats my mother’s menudo, nothing in the world can even get close to the excitement i get when she brings out the huge«olla»(pot) and declares that this Sunday will be menudo day. But after that first bite, I dare compare it to hers, the meat is properly cooked and not rubbery and chewy like most places, it melts in your mouth and the spices in the broth are just perfect. My buddy looks at me and points at the old guy in the back making said menudo. Instead of super large batches where the flavor might lose itself, we see the do individual pots of it, all being sprinkled delicately and accuartely with all the spices needed in a menudo, once done they are transported to the larger pot where its held until someone orders some. The menudo alone is enough to make me want to come here every night. The burrito was a little off, and it felt as if though it would have been a better option as breakfast and not a late night dinner. But, it was still delicious and good, watching our cook make it was just as awesome. There is a certain art to handling spatulas while you are making eggs, the clinging and clanging of the spatulas as they fly accross the flat top flipping burgers and pancakes, and helping eggs get blended with the chorizo. Hamburger Inn has become the place I will go to for menudo, even if i do have to pay for refills on my soda, eating that menudo is a wonderful reminder of how good food can be when people that make it truly love what they do.

They take forever, and their food is extremely over priced for food that’s below average.

This place is AMAZING!!! I love, LOVE, small, short-order, local restaurants(especially when they appear to be hole-the-walls…as they are truly hidden gems) and the ‘Hamburger Inn 2′ does NOT disappoint. I’m in love with their Burrito Picadillo a la Mexicana/Carne Molida a la Mexicana(ground beef, jalepeños, onions, and tomatoes) as well as their Super Burger(beef patty, hotdogs, chili, and the normal trimmings). When my husband and I visit his family from out of state… it is HIGH on my list to visit FREQUENTLY. :-) Additionally, the staff have been friendly and welcoming. :-) …also, they aren’t cash only anymore.(At least as of 1÷1÷15)

Don’t let the appearance of this little hole in the wall scare you off. The food is yummy! If you like places like Rosco’s, you’ll like this. The bacon cheeseburgers are(greasy) but oh so delicious! Menudo on Sundays is great too. Beware though, it’s cash only.
