Meet the Manager

Hannah W.

Manager

Hannah joined the Bay Area Sylvan team in 2013 as an instructor, in 2014 she became the Education Director, and now is the Center Director in El Cerrito. Hannah earned her Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from the University of Georgia, and her Masters of Arts in Teaching for Middle Grades Math and Reading from Valdosta State University. She believes that knowledge is best retained when it connects to a student’s culture and personal interests. She reminds students that anything can be achieved and mastered with enough effort, opportunity, and commitment. Hannah wants to one day combine her passion of teaching with living and working outdoors by creating a «School in the Woods.»

My daughter has been attending Sylvan for three months and I can see a difference in her self-​esteem and willingness to tackle what she finds difficult. Anthony and Troy are wonderful ! They are involved and genuinely interested in the children that attend and I see that each time we are there. Anthony keeps us (parents) on our toes as well. Keep up the great work Sylvan El Cerrito!

Sylvan Learning Center has been great for our daughter. What’s so amazing is to see the happy smiles along with the desire to learn from the faces of the many children who attend. We definitely see a difference in her self esteem and approach to learning with the encouragement received from the staff who seem to be always willing to help her learn and excited about doing so. Having credentialed instructors makes all the difference in the world and the small group sessions make it comfortable for the kids. And I like the pretest and parent meetings which have been very helpful in keeping us informed of our daughter’s progress and needs. Thank you Sylvan.

My granddaughter started math tutoring here in June and has already achieved better math skills and self confidence. She’s gone from a 2nd grade level to a mid 4th grade level in 2 months. The staff are kind, professional, and great teachers. Well worth he money.

My son started tutoring at Sylvan Learning Center two weeks ago. So far we have had a wonderful experience, everyone is very kind and helpful. In our initial meeting we felt very comfortable expressing our needs and goals for our son. In the few weeks our son had been attending Sylvan he has also felt very comfortable expressing where he needs help and feeling supported. I also really like how they have a website set up with information on how your child is doing and where they are at in the program. It also contains additional worksheets you can work on at home that you or your child can print out. Overall we have had a great experience and look forward to seeing our child grown and enjoy learning.

The staff at Sylvan is very caring and professional and have a sincere interesting in helping our son successfully complete his individualized program. They are great with involving us in helping him succeed by keeping us updated and informed on his progress. Motivation and achievement have improved for our son! The program would have earned 5 stars from me if the rate was more affordable.

My sons are very engaged in their tutoring at Sylvan. They enjoy going, they ta a lot about what they are doing and are excited to share their lessons. The fact the teacher have such small groups to work with and they get plenty of one-​on-​one attention as well, makes this tutoring model ideal. I would recommend this program to anyone who has a child with issues around reading and comprehension. The tutors help the students learn to love reading! I look forward to the day when my boys will be confident readers and able to figure these things out on their own. But in the meantime– Thank you Sylvan!

My son started at Sylvan at the beginning of his first grade year (6 years old). He was behind in reading according to his elementary school and the Sylvan Assessment. I was very worried about the cost but I was more worried in the end about my son’s self-​esteem and confidence. He told me that he is the «dumbest» one in his class. It has been 9 months of attending Sylvan and I consider it to be the best investment of my life. My son is now 7 years old and finishing first grade as a star reader in his class. More importantly, he tells me how much he loves reading and says that he thinks he is one of the best readers around! The Sylvan staff and teachers amaze me with their talent and kindness. They have been overwhelmingly supportive with changing our schedule repeatedly. In addition, they always get back to me promptly via email with every request I have made! They meet with the parents every 6 weeks to go over the status and plan for the child. I am so thankful for everyone at Sylvan. Thank you! Thank you!

My daughter has been going to Sylvan for about a year for math. She has made great strides in catching up to her grade level. She went into the program with severe anxiety and fear of doing math at her school. Since then she has become more confident and relaxed about her classroom math work. The staff and teachers have been great with her and she never complains about having to go to Sylvan for tutoring. This summer, the program has been good for bridging the gap between between 3rd and 4th Grade where she has, in the past, forgot a lot of what she learned during the regular school year.

I enrolled my 6 years old into the program because she need help with her reading. At first I thought it was a good program and that it was working but after paying for months and months of nothing I decided to pull her out. I pulled her out the program in September. From April to September the center went through 3 directors. That right there is saying something is right and that the center is unstable. My daughter didn’t get anything out of the program. It was a waste of time and money. I asked the center if they can refund me some of my money and they told me no. I voiced my concerns and complaints but they refuse to listen to what I have to say. With that being said I would not recommend this center to anyone of my family or friends or even strangers. This center is a joke and a waste of money.
