Established in 1983.

In 1983 owner Jake Freedman opened Freedman Tire Service at our current location, 1690 State Rte 27 Edison, NJ, specializing in Tire Sales & Installation, Flat Repairs, Wheel Alignments, Brake Services and Engine Repairs.

Over the past 30+ years Freedman Auto Service has grown to be one of the areas Largest Full Service Auto Repair Shops. I called Freedman Auto to make an appointment for an inspection/​oil change. During our phone conversation, I explained that it had been a long while since any work had been done on my car and, I definitely wanted a general safety inspection of the car, in addition to an oil change. The owner explained to me that oil changes also include an inspection. We confirmed an appointment time prior to hanging up.
1) When I showed up for my appointment, they had no record of my appointment, and I saw a lot of customers there already. The man working at the desk seemed flustered, but squeezed me in anyway. Seems like a positive right? But keep reading…
2) They didn’t do any «inspection.» For example, my brake pads desperately needed replacing and I was aware of this. I didn’t mention it because I wanted to see just how thorough the so-​called inspection is. Nothing was mentioned regarding any recommended work for the vehicle — they wanted to quickly settle the bill and rush me out the door. Good to know! I ended up going elsewhere to replace the brake pads.
2) The oil change: Every shop I’ve gone to, whether Jiffy Lube, etc., did their due diligence to see what type of oil my car requires. They would also confirm with me «what type of oil» prior to actually executing the service. Here at Freedman? They didn’t confirm with me, and just went ahead and did a regular oil change. I had to go somewhere else and get it redone correctly.
Take the glowing reviews with a grain of salt. I suspect many people have a great face to face interaction and then the next day write an amazing review. When it comes to the actual workmanship, only time will tell whether that work was actual quality work.

After going through frustrating experiences of many local and big chain auto services in Edison /​Woodbridge /​Iselin area. I was looking for someone who can get me an honest and straight answers and fix the problem.
By going through many reviews here; I am surprised to see such a high rating for a Auto service shop. I tried it last week for oil service /​wheel alignment and catalytic converter replacement. I got my car back, and driving was all new experience. They did a nice job and at a fair price.

Walked in on Tuesday and greeted by Tony. He heard what all issues I had been facing with my car and told me about the required diagnosis. So before I share my experience with freedman, let me share the history.
I bought a used 2005 saab 9 – 5 aero from a dealer. This was my first car and i didn’t know much about the cars. Everything was fine for 5 months and then got my first CEL, which was P0300. With that there was bad vibrations on the car while applying brakes on hight speed. Luckily my dealer replaced the ignition coil and spark plugs under warranty and the CEL issue was gone. Also trusted my friend who owns a garage for front brake job and he did some sub standard work and put in some after market brakes (got to know when it was pulled out at freedman), vibrations were back after two months.
At Freedman, Tony told me to visit my old mechanic for repairs as it would be under warranty. But I decided not to go back to someone who had made a fool out of me in the past whom I trusted as a friend and asked Tony to replace the brakes and fix other issues with the car. Full diagnosis was done and everything was fixed. But the brakes still had a little vibration from rear brakes. Tony mentioned that as they pointed out issue with front brakes and not rear in diagnosis they put in set of rear brakes free of cost and now my car runs like brand new.
There were other non urgent issues with my car which was pointed out by Tony, which if need araise would definitely go to Freedman to get them fixed. This is recommended to everyone in and around edison. They are fare with repair costs and won’t try to over sell anything to their customers.

Wish I could give five stars to freedman auto but unfortunately that is not the case. While their customer service is unmatched in the auto world (everyone here is really polite) unsatisfactory repairs lead me to suggest going elsewhere. I found this place on Unilocal and decided to give them a try when my cars brakes started to squeak. Walked in with no appointment and within two hours, a full diagnosis was done on my vehicle. The main cause of the squeaking noise were my rear brakes. I agreed to the charges and the «repairs» we’re made. Later that evening, I still heard the noise and freedman auto recommended to bring my car back on the next business day and they would check it out and even put new brakes on my car. When I finally went back a third time, the mechanics claimed they did not hear the noise but replaced the brakes again. Now a week later I’m still driving my car with this loud, quite audible, annoying screeching noise and out of close to $ 400. They did not fix the problem at all waste of money and time !!

I walked in on a Saturday. I was greeted by Jake very cordially. I told him my dealer had recommended brakes, tires and battery change and I was only interested in the absolute necessity. My car was checked in 10 min and Jake suggested changing the tires and battery and not messing with the brakes. The entire work took 2 hours and the car now drives way better then when I brought it into the shop
This is my go to place for all future repairs now

We are from Chicago. My wife drove on curb and broke the tire. I decided to bring the car here to fix it because of the 5 star rating on Unilocal.I sent them a quota asking for whether they have the same continental tire in stock, they replied very fast and told me there is one. When I came here, I found the shop was pretty small. They were very busy when I came in, however they finish their work within one hour. Amazing! There were at least 3 people ahead of me. The tire might not be the cheapest in the market, but they charge very low labor fee. And the most important part was that their service deserved that money. I hope I won’t be back again but if I need I will.

I have taken my car here twice and received amazing service both times. Everyone on the staff is has been kind, courteous, and willing to take the time to explain exactly what I need done. This is a stark contrast to the experiences I have had at dealer auto shops. The prices have been very reasonable and I never felt taken advantage of. I wouldn’t take my car anywhere else.

I found these guys on Unilocal and was so glad I did. I was visiting my mom from DC for the holidays when I noticed her SUV wasn’t turning correctly and had an awful sound when braking. We’ve had mixed experiences with mechanics so I checked Unilocal and found Freedmans. They were super professional, friendly, and efficient. It was later in the day so they had a long queue of cars in service, but still were able to fit us in and diagnose our car within a couple of hours. Turned out we had several issues: brakes, belt, and some other repairs. All were explained thoroughly and repairs were priced reasonably and transparently. The job was done first thing the next morning at 9:30 am. And the car now rides very smoothly. I was really impressed with their prompt and professional service. Added bonus: they are certified as an «Ask Patty» female friendly business.

I found this place on Unilocal and based on the reviews, I decided to travel the extra distance to bring my car there. I had brought my car to a national chain shop and was told I had 4 dented rims (three badly), my engine mounts were failing, and I had two worn tires.
After going to Freedman I left with two new tires and a very good feeling that this was the right place to go! While my rims were dented, they urged me to wait until after pothole season and that this would not cause me further issues down the road (except for some extra vibration.) They did a thorough inspection and given the laundry list of issues I asked them to check on, they could have come up with a number of other problems to fix and didn’t take advantage.
No only were they honest, but someone took the time to sit with me, discuss my issues, and I truly felt like they treated me as they would a family member. Someone was waiting to speak with the gentleman that was explaining what they found, and this gentleman made sure he was finished with me and answered all of my questions before moving onto the next person. I never once felt rushed. In all honesty, being a native New Yorker, I might have gotten impatient if I was the one waiting. However, I truly appreciated the feeling that my car issues were the most important ones they were dealing with (if only for a few minutes.)

My husband and I are traveling and are from out of state. I called Freedman’s because of the great Unilocal reviews it has and I knew our brakes or something was really wrong!
They told us via the phone they couldn’t get us in until the next day and gave me someone else to call. No luck there. Because we are living in our van we decided our problem was to big and thought we could just spend the night there and have Freedman’s work on it in the morning.
We arrived in the afternoon and the gentleman remembered speaking to me on the phone. I cannot begin to tell you how gracious and friendly the staff were! I don’t know how they did it but they managed to work us into their schedule and had us back on the road by 5:00 with a complete front brake job and oil change… UNBELIEVABLE!
These people are amazing and we made a promise to pay it forward the good will and helpfulness they gave to us

Originally I turned to Unilocal to help me find a trustworthy mechanic near me. Unilocal has yet to fail me!
Dropped my car off at Freedman Auto on a Saturday-​I knew it needed a crap ton of work, but it started with me asking for an oil change and a vehicle check over. It didn’t surprise me when we found out what was actually wrong with the car, what surprised me was how quick and efficiently they fixed it! (My dad is a mechanic and so we already had an idea of what was wrong, he just didn’t have what he needed to fix it). My car is a 2004 and it’s running like I bought the 2016 version of it. They’ve fixed all the problems in a matter of 2 days and the entire experience will keep me a loyal customer for any car needs I may have. My car is working beautifully and I am so lucky to have found this auto center, especially so close to home.
The staff-​meaning, every single person employed in that building-​is SUPER friendly, patient, and very attentive. Prices are very reasonable and they’re NOT like other car places that make up things that are wrong with your car to help them make an extra buck.

I was always nervous bringing my car into a shop to get fixed. Every time I felt like the auto body shops were ripping me off big time. That was until I found Freedman Auto Service.
They are AWESOME and really take care of you. Ever since I started bringing my car here, I’ve had less stress. They give fair prices and do great work.
I can’t recommend Jake enough. He’s very patient and knowledgeable. My side view mirror fell off one day and when I took it in, he didn’t even charge me for the labor just the part. For me that’s unheard of anywhere else. That’s just one example of how awesome they are. I can’t say enough good things about Freeman’s. I’ll only bring my car in here :)

I wanted to get the tires changed on my car. With a scheduled appointment and a hope that all goes well, I went in, only to be greeted by the owner in the most enthusiastic way! He wasn’t just gracious but so understanding as well. Here’s how, I wanted to change the tires that I had with something new and good, yet inexpensive, so I’d narrowed down on NEXXUS tires for a grand total of $ 483 for my car’s specs.
However, I had the specs wrong, and technically required tires with a bigger dimensions.
I also had thought of splitting the costs of changing the tires to two payments, so in my head, I’d get two front tires changed now, and then come back a month later to get the next set changed. Mr. Freedman had such a keen sense of customer satisfaction that he was able to figure this whole deal out without having spoken to me before. So, ultimately, he not only worked out a financial plan for me to pay for two tires a little later, but also gave me better tires that would fit, and glide on the road, but also work well within my budget!
I was really happy with the service!!! It was fast, very satisfying and superbly well planned out for me!

I took my Volvo here for an oil change and to get my brakes inspected as my vehicle was starting to vibrate at high speeds when I applied them. The staff were very helpful and accommodating, Jake himself test drove and worked on my car. They even gave me a ride to and from my apartment to drop off and pick up the car.
I’m taking off a star because there was a little bit of over-​promising and under-​delivery for the time frames. After dropping off my car in the morning, I was told I would be getting a call at 5 to review the repairs and cost involved, but I ended up calling them back myself at 5:30. I was told my car would be ready to go by 2 pm the following day, but I was picked up at 2:30, and out the door a little after 3 pm. Of course, being one of the best repair shops in the area, I can understand how busy they are and the difficulty in coordinating times. It would have been fine with me if they had told me the car would be ready at 3, as I could’ve planned accordingly and not have been late for my 3 pm appointment. In my humble opinion, it’s always better to underpromise and over-​deliver when it comes to customer service.
At any rate, I’m satisfied with the service I received. I liked how Jake called me a week later to check on how my car was doing. It was a nice touch and I will come again in the future.
