Wisconsin Cheese and Wine Chalet

We drove by just now and the place is closed and the phone number has been disconnected.

I stopped by a few weeks ago for some of their wonderful smoked sausage, and it appears the place is out of business and up for sale.

Love this place! While they have a wonderful selection of wines and other spirits… their specialty meats & cheeses are amazing. If you are looking for a perfect way to celebrate a special occasion or just like to unwind after a long day, a glass of wine is the perfect touch.
For seasonal entertainment on those warm weather days, the outside patio and live music are an excellent way to enjoy a relaxing evening.
So go! Stop in! You won’t be dissapointed by this little gem!

Pros: I bought wine here that is sold EXCLUSIVELY in WI. I thought that was awesome. They also have a deli. They have a great selection of cheese and meats. I bought some smoked cheddar cheese and it was the best cheese that I have ever had. The smoke taste is so strong I felt like there was a bonfire in my mouth. Its absolutely amazing and I highly suggest giving it a try.
Cons: there needs to be a bigger selection of wine.

Over a hundred different types of cheesin and a lot of good wine on me from Wisconsin. They have this chocolate cheese that is really delicious. And the Gouda cheese is to die for but you only could buy it and one pound blocks. They make chicago style hot dog there and cheese bratwurst which is very good as well

A nice little place off ³⁹⁄₉₀ on the way back from Madison. Wisconsin cheese varieties with some surprises (habanero cranberry cheddar?). Local beers like New Glarus, Ale Asylum, Capital along with a large selection of local wine. Free wine samples abound. Also an eclectic collection of jarred treats and jams. Smoked turkey legs, flavored brats, random sausages and jerky! Wheeee!
Service is über friendly and there’s enough rustic charm to make you feel all warm inside. Stop in there at least once, but odds are you’ll be back again.

I’m so in love with this place! I’m tempted to drive up just to shop when I get bored. I decided last minute to stop in here on a Sunday when I was making a long drive solo. The owner immediately greeted me and offered some wine samples.
I was only able to take 2 small sips (I was nervous with such a long drive). I’m sad I wasn’t able to try more. I really enjoyed the 2 I tried. I decided on 3 bottles. They were running a promotion buy 3 and receive a free moscato or sangria. Great deal!
As I walked around the store I noticed little samples of all different kinds of jams, cheese, etc. It was time for me to eat healthy again so I skipped these. I made up a 6 pack of craft beer. They had several great choices by the bottle.
I could have honestly sat and talked to the owner all day long. He was awesome. I’m sad I couldn’t go grab drink with him! I’m not sure how often I will be near here, but this will always be at the top of my list for places I love in Wisconsin.

If you know me, you know that I LOVE Wisconsin. Seriously. I would never get one of those cutesy heart in state necklaces or anything else for IL love (okay, okay, I WOULD get a License to IL shirt but that’s because the Beastie Boys are the bomb, NOT because IL is) but I certainly would get one for WI. And I’m a born and raised Illinoisan (is that what we’re called?). ANYWAY, I love Wisconsin for many reasons but the top three are food and drink related (naturally) and in order of importance go 1) beer, 2) meat, and 3) cheese. I usually find myself in Milwaukee when I’m Wisconsining (read: drinking) which obviously has me stopping at Mars Cheese Castle and Bobby Nelson’s on my way home, but this trip had me out in Madison and I was kind of panicky about where I was going to get my cheese and sausage for the road. Luckily, Wisconsin Cheese and Wine Chalet had my back.
We didn’t (surprisingly) buy any wine or beer, but did go in looking for some cheese and sausage. They don’t have a HUGE selection, but they had what I needed… some delicious mixed and spicy jalapeño cheese curds. My favorites for fauxtine (fake poutine I make at home… not as good as the original but good enough) and snacking. And no cheese curd snack is good without sausage so I snagged me some bacon and cheese sausage sticks to boot. THE BEST.
I would’ve preferred to have a huge WI beer selection to wine but judging by the name of the place, I wasn’t even expecting ANY beer to be here so it was a bonus to see any at all. Seems like the real star of this place is the wine tasting/​wines by the glass but I was already beered out so I passed… maybe next time.
I will definitely be making this my go-​to cheese and sausage stop in Madison and you should too.

We were heading to Madison to do our Costco run and on Unilocal it said we were near a cheese shop, so we pulled off. It isn’t a big shop, but the staff was very helpful and friendly. My husband sampled some beers and bought some to take home. Then we sampled a few cheeses, selected a few. Didn’t get the Bacon Cheddar, but after I got home I thought would be good for BBQ. They don’t have a large selection of cheese, more wine, beer and hard cider.
We were on our way to Madison and after sampling we were hungry, but it was only 10 am and their deli wasn’t open yet. Hubby asked if we could order a sandwich and very pleasantly the woman told us to wait a minute for her to set up. We continued shopping and then we got a very fresh and tasty sandwich with chips. They have a cute little patio outside. All in all a nice little find.

Great cheese with free smokes available from WI, state of best American cheese. But they should serve sandwiches specially with all of those cheeses they have available!

I have stopped my here a few times over the years to grab a few bottles and some cheese. They have a nice selection of wine including many types from local wineries. They usually seem to be having some sort of sale going on with by so many get one free etc. etc. They have a big selection of cheese and beer sausages and a decent display of local beer too plus snacky type stuff and gadgets. I recommend this to any wine enthusiast or cheese lover.

This wine chalet is a short distance away from Blackhawk Campground, one of my favorite places to be in the summer. This place reminds me of one of the many places like this in Door County. They usually have a handful of wines that they are sampling and the friendly staff was eager to point out additional wines that you might like based on your tastes. The day that I went (on a Saturday) they also were sampling several cheeses, dips and other delicious things throughout the store. I love being able to try something before I buy it — so this was a plus for me. They also have a small selection of food items that you can order (mostly sandwiches) which were pretty good. One of my favorite parts about this place was that you can sit out back with a glass of any wine they carry. If you ask me, this is the perfect way to end your day.

So I admit that I had no idea what a chalet was. I didn’t need to know, right? I was here to buy cheese. Anyway, I figured it to be a fancy French term pertaining to wine; something I know little about. Much to my surprise the word describes a type of building which makes perfect sense having seen the outside of this place. It looks like an old barn sitting next to a gas station. My kind of barn…
Opening the door we were met by Frank Sinatra. Not literally of course but his voice was booming through the speakers. It felt like home… how lovely. Everyone should buy beer, wine and cheese while listening to Sinatra. The place was rather small but found a way to stuff a ton of items amongst the shelves. They have a nice selection of crackers, mustards, jams, beer (particularly New Glarus Brewing), wine, snacks, and a long refrigerated section dedicated specifically to cheese and sausage. Most cheeses can be sampled which helped persuade my decision. I purchased a few blocks of aged cheddar cheese which were all outstanding and a few six packs of New Glarus beer. I grabbed some beer snacks near the counter and dropped everything near the register. The staff was friendly and helpful in wrapping up our large puchase. $ 95 later we were out the door.
A nice pit stop along the way, this chalet made our trip up to Northern Wisconsin a better one as we loaded our car with snacks and goodies. Bonus points for being right off the highway.

The cheese curds did not squeak against my teeth, which means they weren’t fresh. They also tasted salty. I wasted $ 7.00.
Next time I’m in Wisconsin looking for cheese (or cheese curds), I will certainly keep driving and avoid the Wisconsin Cheese & Wine Chalet. There are plenty of other cheese places to visit just off the highway.

We had our eyes peeled for a resource for Wisconsin cheese, and stopped in here along the Interstate.
They have a large selection of the region’s cheeses, as well as the beers and wines, including choices of berry wine that are rarely seen.
The staff was affable and informative.
Although we didn’t avail ourselves of the opportunity, they also make and serve sandwiches.

Good cheese stand with plenty of sample available. Prices seemed a bit on the high side but had an excellent selection of cheeses, wines and beers for purchase. Best purchase was a mixed 6 pack for 10 bucks. I stocked on a variety of IPAs to try before my next trip north.

I’m still loving this place, but I’m wondering if the staff and attitudes toward the customers change with the seasons. My normal wine guy wasn’t there. In his place were still a number of helpful people, but the place was hopping and I didn’t get the one-​on-​one friendly chit chat that I found so comforting in the winter. I guess I’ve just been spoiled.
The sample wine selection is expanding and Rachel J. and I were able to try out the Chocovine raspberry flavor (not as good as the original). We also tried the Oktoberfest, so I can back up her story. I understand everyone has their own opinions about wine, but you’re trying to sell the stuff. Why would you so bluntly express your distate for it? Oh well, more for us!
The bacon cheddar cheese is amazing. We tried to snag a brick on the way back home, but they closed right before we made it over there. This was on Labor Day just after 8pm, so you know they are open late even for some holidays. I like the convenience and always thought they were priced reasonably.
I’ve come to find that you can find cheaper bottles in the big cities and at smaller liquor stores, but I still like that this is on my way and make it a special little treat. For nothing else, the extra dollars help support a local business with a great selection and helpful employees.

But there was a slightly snotty staff situation.
I was sampling wines, and came across this odd bottle of Oktoberfest. It’s a blend of three wines that somehow equals pear-​y citrus-​y flavor. I found it strange and tasty. The gal pouring samples for us asked how we liked it, and we both replied with positive comments. She says very flatly: Oh really. I am not a fan.
Whatever dude. I like it, and I am buying some (ok…a lot) of it.
The bathroom was clean and appreciated, and the selection of cheeses was interesting and tasty. I did love the samples they had out. I would hate to make an investment in some of that cheese and end up not enjoying it that much. With the sample system, you can do no wrong. I am still a bit bummed that I didn’t buy the bacon cheddar. T’would have been good on my burger. Next time, Chalet, next time.

A great way to break up a road trip, the Wisconsin Cheese and Wine Chalet has a great selection of cheese and wine (duh), beer, sausage, and other Wisconsin staples. You can buy bottles of beer individually as well as make your own 6-​pack, a great way to sample different beers (and makes a great gift!).
They have some of the Wisconsin-​themed cheese, in the shapes of the state, a cow, a Packer’s player, etc. And they usually have samples of cheese, sausage, and wine to taste. They also have fun non-​food options, like shot glasses, cocktail napkins, and other such things.

Stopped here on our way home from camping in Lake Mills. Always a fan of the roadside WI cheese shop; I have a thing for port wine pub cheese, that thick, fresh WI string cheese that you can’t get anywhere else, and whatever cheese they have marked «spicy,» «habanero,» or «fire.» This particular cheese mecca had two of the three. (Inexplicably no thick string cheese, must be exclusive to the Mars Cheese Castle.) We also picked up this huge brick of some Frankenstein’s Monster-​type creation of cheddar/​roquefort, which has been adorning our salads for the last two weeks.
They have a friendly staff eager to give you a free wine tasting when you arrive. When in WI, we’re all about the beer, and this chalet does not disappoint in it’s selection. Great specialty six-​packs from all the great, and also the little-​known, WI breweries.
I suspect this is where we will fill up what little room we have left in the trunk on our way home from camping from now on…
