Cloverleaf Bar & Restaurant

I haven’t been to Cloverleaf in nearly three years as their quality was very poor; the pizza was underbaked and doughy and the waitstaff was not great…
I gave them another chance last night after wanting to pizza, but needing to not go to the usual spot and I’m pleased to say that the experience was much better. It was actually like it used to be before they went on a bad streak.
The pizza was hot, thoroughly baked and delicious! *This* is Detroit style pizza and I’m very glad that they’re back on track. Our server was also very friendly, so it was a complete 180!
The beer selection could use a bit more craft selections, but there’s more than a few on the menu, so I can now once again recommend Cloverleaf as a go-​to spot for Detroit style pizza and beer!

I hate the cancer smoke that stinks when you try to walk into the front door. The owners should put stuff up outside to keep the smokers from sinking the place up. This is the only place to eat I have ever run across such a nasty smelling smoke as you go to the front door. I will keep coming back IF that nasty smokers are removed by blocking them from the front entrance… otherwise…I will go elsewhere.
The food is great but I almost loose my appetite walking in.

My brother from another came into town for the holidays. He’s all about Detroit style square pizza and is actually in the process of opening a brewery pizzeria in Portland as I speak.
I decided to take him out to Loui’s for dinner but when we arrived we discovered it was closed that night :-(
My bud mentioned that he was also interested in checking out Cloverleaf and told me the story about how Buddy’s, Loui’s and Cloverleaf are originally related.
So off we went. Decided to keep it simple and ordered a large supreme and some Italian beers. The pizza was delicious for sure.
Here’s my critique. The pizza was delicious but now I’m comparing it to my favorite «Loui’s in Hazel Park». The pizza had great flavor. Corners were especially great. The bottom crust was a bit soggy due to the pizza having a lot of wetness. Lots of sauce and heavy on the toppings. I’d say at lease twice the sauce as Buddy’s or Loui’s… Hence soggy dough. Still delicious but not as good as Loui’s. I’d put it in the middle if the three. Where maybe buddy’s on a good day might pass it by a smidge.
I liked that the beer prices were resonable. $ 3 for a Italian beer seems alright by me.
I noticed on my way out that they had a buffet going. I wish we would have known because I probably would have gotten that.
In conclusion, this is a great Detroit square pizza but if I’m making the drive I’d probably choose Buddy’s in Detroit or Loui’s in Hazel Park.

It’s 7pm on a Sunday, we wait 20 minutes for a seat. Get our drinks, put in our order and the waitress comes back a minute later and says they ran out of pizza dough. You can’t be serious. Didn’t they realize they were running low? Making people wait to run out of dough. You can tell how many people are waiting, and how much dough you have. Joke of an operation, and extremely inconsiderate.

Hands down the best pizza in the area! They use fresh ingredients and fresh dough. Everyone is always so friendly too, which is hard to come by sometimes.
I give them props for serving homemade mozzarella wedges and their ranch is AWESOME! The only complaint is that the mozz wedges needed a bit more salt and/​or flavoring (garlic or parmesan cheese maybe?), but other than that everything is on point.
I will continue to give this place my business. Keep up the good work!

This place is just plain OKAY for their buffet. The food is kind of like stoffers maybe a notch above. The service leads you to wonder. Most of their customers are loyal because they grew up eating this pizza and have developed a palate for it. What I would say is if you have ever had really good pizza, you may be better off with Dijorno than wasting your time going here and spending money. They do have root beer that is good and their antipasta salad is super fresh.
Lastly bring your kids here for the buffet but some of the pizza is not so fresh. I would recommend spending the same money for kids and taking them to American Pie just a few miles up the road.

A must for pizza lovers and craft beers. East side Detroit style pizza at its finest.

I want to like it, I truly do… My dad worships the place, but I just don’t think the pizza is all that great. And it’s not like I haven’t given it a chance, heck I even dated the late owner (Gus) daughter Teresa, so I’ve tried everything there, lol (not trying to sound dirty). It just seems like a wanna be Buddy’s and Buddy’s is overrated in my opinion. The bartenders are friendly, the waitresses are hit or miss. They used to have an older bigger sized gal that was AWESOME, but she left. The karaōke used to be cool, but that’s gone. 3 stars for my dad, 2 if it was from just me. Don’t get me wrong, nothings truly amiss here, just not my first choice for pizza. Green Lantern, Madison Heights or Loui’s, Hazel Park…10x better.

What can you say about the originalpizza it’s incredible thick perfect crust pizza is the best in Detroit by far. They taught buddies pizza how to make pizza … Their sauce, Cheese, all their toppings are great quality… just love this place nobody makes a better pizza…

This is definitely a family staple for the area.
The key word here is consistency.
Yes, their waitstaff is a revolving door.
And yes, there is nothing healthy on the menu.
But if you’re looking for old school Italian with Detroit Style Pizza and an ample bar this is where you want to be.
And btw, nothing is better than that whipped cheesecake.

A few weeks ago, I was riding in the Gratiot Cruise & I stopped in for some of their famous square Pizza and Italian Sausage.
As sponsors of the Eastpointe Cruise, they actively support the annual rolling car show as it passes right out in front of their business. As such, they had the aforementioned pizza and Italian sausage available, as well as Faygo soft drinks. Also available were the event T-​shirts and hats.
It’s great to see the local businesses supporting this annual event, which benefits the community as a whole.

If you know the history of Cloverleaf, you know that Gus Guerra got his start with the Original Buddy’s! Cloverleaf is among the best Detroit-​style deep dish pizza. The service is always great, and the pizza is always hot and fresh.
Make sure you try the famous «crunchy bread»! It’s a sweet and savory treat with your pizza and salad meal.
This is a great place for parties, rehearsal dinners, or just a great night out!

The low rating is due to not ordering the pizza and the bad service. The three others in my group ordered the pizza and it was great as usual, but I desired something other than pizza and ordered the ribs, what a mistake! Stick with the pizza, they really can’t make other items. The soup was greasy, the ribs tough, dry and I wouldn’t be surprised if they were frozen and micro’d. The baked potato was hard. Our waitress kept disappearing for long periods of time, and no they were not busy, so I couldn’t even point out the problems to her. When she finally did return it was with take home containers. I mentioned about the problems with my uneaten food and she shrugged and walked away. Of course couldn’t find the manager either. Good pizza, but don’t come here unless everyone in your group is having it!

Decent food, hit or miss service. I’ve had great service and horrible service here. It’s a family owned restaurant and they seem «too nice» to their employees. Bad waitresses don’t seem properly trained or disciplined, and they stay employed way, way too long.
Their pizza, salads and crunchy bread are all good, but it’s not traditional Italian. Their sauce is very sweet, as are their bread sticks. Some people dig it, some people hate it. I happen to like it. That said, everything else on the menu is very mediocre. It’s mostly frozen/​boxed italian, and it’s not even quality frozen/​boxed Italian. They must get their ravioli from GFS or Lapari, Turri’s has a much better product.
If you want quality Italian I would skip this place. I don’t like Olive Garden, but Olive Garden is better for pasta. However, if you want a good pie, nice crowd, and nice atmosphere, and you don’t mind being patient or dealing with hit or miss service, stop in. I do generally enjoy myself here, and the prices are very reasonable.
A small pizza is $ 8 and it can be shared, especially if you get a salad to go with it. It’s 4 big pieces. A large will only set you back around $ 15, which isn’t bad at all for its size.

Love their pizza, when it’s good, hit or miss… oh the sweet crunchy bread is music to my ears.
Servers are either great or terrible.
Been going there for decades. A lot of great memories in Cloverleaf.
I was so happy when they opened one on 22 & Hayes, because this location is down right frightening.
But thank you for making a yummy pizza. For selling Buddy’s and now Detroit Style pizza. All so addicting and delicious!

This is one of our family favorites. Amazing Detroit style pizza, along with a variety of other Italian (and Italian-​ish) dishes, served by smiling, friendly servers who really want to make your visit extraordinary. Still family owned and operated, they mingle with guests and ensure that everything is ideal. I LOVE the sweet flatbread in their bread basket– it’s complementary but still adds an extra degree of yum to set Cloverleaf apart. They have a full, huge bar and gluten-​free options. If you’re looking to feel like family, I can’t recommend them enough.
(Deducted one star because they were SO popular & busy that our server seemed overwhelmed. Also, the marinara sauce is a bit too sweet… both minor complaints.)

Reasons to eat here:

*Antipasto salad filled with premiun salami, ham and cheese

Honestly in 10 plus years I’ve never had a bad meal and when I just can make up my mind I let Michelle choose my dinner.

A must have Detroit Pizza Experience.
No two ways about it, if you know what Detroit pizza is all about, you should get to know Cloverleaf. It’s been here forever and it is one of the definitive deep dish square pizzas around.
I can’t speak to much else about the place because even though I know they have a full menu of Italian classics, i’ve only had the pizza. One time I came in for lunch and had the buffet they had set up and just had pizza. So pretty much. get some pizza.
Staff is cool, always an owner somewhere mingling. Lots of regulars, a huge bar and no long wait times for your food.
Oh, try the salad too, it’s pretty good but I can’t remember it after 1 bite of the pizza, it’s that good.

Went again for dinner with a group of 11. No wait on a Monday at around dinner time. I got the lake perch, which comes with two sides, because I don’t care for the pizza here. I chose the macaroni and cheese and the vegetable (which turned out to be green beans). The lake perch was about $ 15 and came with six or seven decent-​sized pieces of fish. The fish seemed to definitely be fresh, and was pan fried with minimal grease — it tasted really good. The tartar sauce seemed to be out of a bottle, but I’m not picky about that. The macaroni and cheese was a fair size, but it was about I expected it to be… eh. The green beans were green beans… simply steamed and served in a little dish.
The service was pretty good, and the food came out in a reasonable amount of time. Still not a place I’d likely choose to go to, but I was surprised by the lake perch, and everybody else seemed pretty happy with their meal.
It’s probably worth letting you know that the toppings here are an absolute rip-​off … on the pizza that the others chose, it was pepperoni, onion, and green pepper. Each topping is $ 1.75 or something like that on a large pizza (After the first one, I think), which is bad enough, and there are just paper-​thin slices of the vegetables… what a rip. There was some left over, and when we got home and opened the box, the bottom of the pizza was slimy with orange grease. Mmm… appetizing!
