Specialties

Schwab’s 2nd Wind is an Athletic Footwear store with a specialty in Running, Track & Field, Walking and Fitness. We beleive that athletic shoes are not sold, but fitted. Service here means more than having a greeter say hello to you at the door. We measure you, analize your gait, foot balance, and discuss your footwear needs and uses before we even begin to look at shoes. We will encourage you to take a test run outside before making your decision. Our staff has a wealth of shoe, running and training knowlege that they are anxious to share with you.

History

Established in 1980.

2nd Wind began in 1979 in Raymond Schwab’s basement. At that point, 2nd Wind Re-Soled and Repaired worn running shoes. Along with repairing running shoes, we were learning volumes about how the shoes were constructed, and how they should be constructed. The following year we opened out first store front in a 600 square foot shop in Port Jefferson. At that point, we had a selection of 16 models of shoes. In 1984 we moved to our present location in East Setauket, and display an average of 250 at any given time. It could easily be more, but we carefully select only the best shoes from each of our vendors.

Our primary promotion has always been to give away a free 2nd Wind T-Shirt to every high school runner that purchases a shoe. Because of that, we added screen printing you our line in 1984. We are now one of the largest T – Shirt and Uniform suppliers to the running comunity in Suffolk County.

Meet the Business Owner

Harold S.

Business Owner

My present life and career path began in 1969, my first year on the high school track team. When it was time to be issued shoes, I was brought to the equipment room to find a pair that fit. I remember having that awed feeling that a normal guy would get walking into a showroom of vintage Sports Cars. While running would dominate my life for the next 10 years, the facination for running shoes never left.

In high school, my specialty was the hurdles. I had enough success there, a New York State record in the 120 yard High Hurdles, and a National Record in the 330 yard Intermediates Hurdles, that I was able to go on the University of Pennsylvania to further my education and running aspirations.

At Penn, I was a 5 time All-American, and 5th place finisher in the 400m hurdles at the 1976 Olympic Trials. Yea, also a BS in Economics from the Wharton School.

In 1979 my dad and I decided to chase a dream and start our own running business out of his basement. The rest is history.
