History

Established in 2007.

ZZQ Smokehouse started as a food truck in 2007. The name ZZQ stems from my first and last name starting with Z. The food truck was my way of teaching myself a fast casual restaurant concept, food flow, and operations. My wife and I have traveled to the BBQ regions studying and sampling the regional flavor profiles. This enabled us to further develop our skills, profiles and techniques. ZZQ’s philosophy, quality in quality out. Simplify the menu, smoke the best meat products available, and serve the sauce on the side. I started ZZQ Smokehouse by asking myself this question. «If I had all the money in the world, but had to start a business what business would make me happy showing up for work everyday.» I chose the demanding restaurant world, but I can truly say I’m happy barbecuing and interacting with equally passionate guests daily.

Ok — first understand I’m from Dallas, Texas and I’m picky about barbecue.
In Dallas we have barbecue restaurants that of been there since the 30s and 40s been others that have sprung up from pitmaster barbecue winners that created their own BBQ chains in town.
So I’m saying my standards are pretty high.
This place was just awesome.
I had a brisket sandwich and dry rub ribs and they were just fantastic — anything and everything on the menu — just can’t go wrong
I’ll be back.

Ribs are out-​of-​this-​world amazing! This place is great and I will be back again and again. Usually disappointed with ribs at restaurants as they are never as good as I want them to be, even «award-​winning» places. But this time — no disappoint! Was better than I expect ribs to ever be or knew they could be! Also loved the fries.

Was in the cities just for the evening and was craving some barbecue. Figured we’d give ZZQ a try since they were newly opened and I liked the name. We got a brisket and pulled pork plate and a brisket with ribs (three) plate. Brisket was thick cut, seasoned perfectly, and magical. Pulled pork was «melt in your mouth» good! And lastly, the ribs had a fantastic dry rub and came off the bone easily. Along with the great meat, ZZQ had a variety of sauces to pick from. Sweet, savory, and spicy (just ask for the hot sauce-​habanero hot). Super friendly and helpful staff! Definitely plan on coming back!

Easily the best bbq in the Eagan area! The taste, texture and quality of the meat is top notch. Along with a vast array of scratch made sauces, there is something for anyone’s taste. For sure a welcome addition to Eagan!

I just tried ZZQ for the first time tonight. I ordered two 2-​meat plates so I was able sample every meat and side they have. The meat was amazing. All four kinds had the best smoke flavor I’ve ever had. The Ribs, Chicken, and Pulled Pork were my favorite. So much flavor and so juicy. I didn’t think the brisket was up to par of the others. It was cut really thin and had some not as tender parts, but still full of flavor. The fries and potato salad were my favorite sides. Seriously some of the best fries I’ve had anywhere… I love the seasoning on them. The beans were also very good, but I’m just not big of fan of them in the first place. I didn’t care for the cole slaw at all. It has a strong vinegar taste that’s different than any recipe I’ve had before.
Overall this is the best BBQ joint I’ve ever been to. The staff was very friendly and the restaurant very clean. The house sauces were also good, however they seem to be missing one that really brings some heat. I’ll definitely be going back… often.

Soooo good! I had the ribs… down right tasty. There is a fabulous, flavorful run on the so sauce really isn’t needed! I of course had to try all the sauces though, my favorite was the thicker, «smoky» one. The coleslaw is a vinegar base, way better then creamy yuck! The owner zack was there and super friendly and have good advice! There isn’t a ton of décor in the restaurant but it isn’t needed. It was super clean and we will be back for sure!

Is this good BBQ? I guess that comes down to what you have had before and maybe where you come from…
Well for my money this is ok at best. Two words; Lowry Salt. I am pretty sure that is the secret ingredient on the ribs. Not that great and way to salty.
Brisket had no smoke ring and was dry. More like meat you get from Arby’s.
Pulled pork was stringy and had no bark on it. Everything was just ok at best.
Pass on the potato salad and the beans are again just ok.
This BBQ will not win any competitions and I can smoke a pork shoulder myself for less cash…

If you are looking for BBQ meat that’s better then the BBQ chain places everyone is used to, then you have to try this place! It raises the bar. Sauces are free and come on the side allowing you to add as much or as little as you like and there are plenty to choose from, though just eating the meat itself has tons of flavor that will have you coming back for more. Also you have to try the burnt ends they do on Sunday’s, amazing!

This is exactly what a BBQ joint should be… no frills, a small and tasty menu, and an owner who interacts with the customers. We went in and I ordered two meats. The owner was out working the front counter and helped guide us to which meats he thought we might like. He also helped us pick the sauces (all of them were delicious). Everything was cooked fresh which made it that much better.
Being one of the first few days they were open, we were offered some samples of the meats that we didn’t order. I will be honest, I am quite mad that I didn’t get the ribs as my meal and only got to try one. It was amazing! I will definitely go back just for these! The portions were generous, to say the least, and well worth the money.
The restaurant wasn’t too busy and the owner came and checked on us personally during the meal. It was a nice touch with a new business.
The facility isn’t anything special, the quality of the food means they don’t need any gimmicks to get you to eat there. It is definitely a good place to check out!

Zac and his crew delivered A++ service! They seemed to have mastered the art of perfect smoked meats! Watching them make the delicious pulled pork sandwich looked like an episode of Diners, Drive-​Ins, and Drives! The fries reminded me of the best state fair ones! If you get a chance to stop by, do your tummy a favor and GO!

Best food I’ve had in a long, long time! The meat had a wonderful smokey flavor, seasoned perfectly. It was so hard to decide on which meat to try. Between all of us, we had the ribs, brisket, chicken and pulled pork. One just as delicious as the other!!! The sides were excellent too. My favorite was the baked beans. They had a warm smokey flavor to them. A must try restaurant. And once you try it, you will be back!

Holy smoke! That’s what you will taste here. The ribs were perfect. I chatted with the owner for a bit and he recommended trying them with no sauce. I’m a sauce guy, but I did it anyhow. I cleaned off all 3 ribs as is. Thick, smokey, outside crust, gave way to fall off the bone tender meat inside. Some of the best ribs ever — and no sauce. This guy is good! The pulled pork and brisket was almost as good. Next time it will be ribs and brisket. I did have to doctor the slaw a bit, (take out) too vinegary (and I love vinegar). The beans, on the other hand, were flippin’ fantastic. So glad to have some real deal BBQ in Eagan! Honest 5* here.
P. S. the mustard sauce is outstanding!

I live down the street so I’ve been anxiously waiting for them to open! My husband and I stopped in tonight and we were not disappointed!
1. It’s super easy to order. All options come with two sides. I opted for the 1-​meat meal (brisket) and my husband picked the 2-​meat meal (brisket and pulled pork).
2. Sides were what you’d expect from a BBQ place, fries, coleslaw, potato salad, baked beans.
3. We both thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The meat was delicious and smokey — my favorite flavor! We tried a few of the sauces on the counter and they were all tasty. The pulled pork was my favorite if I had to pick between the two. While the sides were very tasty, we would have liked a little more sugar in the beans and potato salad, but that’s just our personal preference.
5. The price was not bad at all, in fact I was expecting it to be more so I was pleasantly surprised. For the two of us to eat plus a drink each and a tip was under $ 30.
4. The owner was super nice and asked us how we were enjoying our meal while we were there. He even made sure we were pleased as we were leaving. We assured him we’ll be back — and we will!
I’m so glad there’s a BBQ place in Eagan now!

Food was amazing. This was my first time there, though my girlfriend had been there two times already. We got a 2 meat basket to share and then got another 1 meat one to try more things. The smoked brisket is delicious and I could live and breathe it. The sides are great, nothing too sweet, good flavor. Ribs and pulled pork also very good. I talked to the owner Zak for a while. He has a focused passion about BBQ and seems to really know what he is talking about. The meats come out unsauced however there are sauces you can get on the side. We got 2 of them and they were good but the meat is so good on its own we had a hard time wanting to mix them together.
I definitely want to go back soon.

I live right by here and have been waiting for it to open so I could try it out. They have a very easy to use menu, very straight forward which I like personally. I decided to try the pulled pork sandwich with fries and potato salad. I love trying the potato salad at bbq joints because they are all very different and usually very good. I thought the pork was AMAZING and perfectly smoked, extremely juicy and not dried out. It does come plain though with no bbq sauce. They do have a zzq bbq sauce which I put on and that is very very good as well. They do only have that one sauce though which I thought was a little odd as usually there are a few different sauces from various regions. But I guess if you only have one sauce it better be good and it definitely is. The fries were really tasty and not overly seasoned. Lastly the potato salad was kind of bland and plain. But all in all this is a must try place. I will definitely be back!

Not the greatest food in the history of this country, but it’s good.
Coleslaw tastes like it came straight outta vinegar.
French fries were extremely salty and soggy.

This was my first time visiting this place since they opened and I was very happy overall with the quality of the food and the service I received. The employees were all very friendly and you can tell these people are proud of the business they operate. I got the brisket sandwich with cole slaw and hand cut fries. The brisket was delicious and smokey, the fries were really good as well (better than most fries I’ve had at fast food places and perfectly seasoned). The coleslaw was cold and crispy, though my one issue with it was that the sugar seemed to have been omitted from this recipe. I’m not entirely sure if this was on purpose or not, but I’d try it again next time to see for sure. I added some of their sauce to it (the sauce is very good as well!) and it improved the flavor quite a bit. Overall a good experience and I hope they stay in business because the world needs more unique no-​chain restaurants like this.

i just went here after leaving from puffy cream donuts. my dad noticed the place said bbq so he had to enter. it was a simple little menu. i got a 1 meat plate with a bun and fries. i tried there bbq sauce. it was the sweetest i had ever had. great place.

I have lived all over including TX, MO and currently live in North Carolina so I have tried a lot of bbq and this is the best bbq that I have had. I will defiantly be back the next time I am in the MN.
