Durango Mountain Resort

Went here today with the family to do the summer activities. Bought the $ 45 4-​hour activity pass, but daughter got very sick before we could even get started. The five stars are for the excellent customer service I received — staff let my daughter lie down on the couch in the lobby; they called a driver to drive us down to the urgent care center, and the gave us a refund in full since we weren’t able to do any activities. Also, kudos to the medical staff at Mercy Urgent Care at DMR — they were FABULOUS.

This is a beautiful property, with a lot of nice runs. The staff is friendly and most people here are on vacation, so the atmosphere is great! The Powderhouse was a favorite spot for a warm up

My family, friends and I came here for spring break this year. The resort is beautiful and the staff is impeccable. They were not disgruntled and actually cared that you were having a good time and treated you as if they were happy you were there. I’ve been to Wolf Creek and Ski Apache and their service was horrendous. I loved how all the shops and restaurants were only a short distance from one another. The bathrooms were clean and lockers were great.
Some folks from our group rented their gear at the resort and it was easy to rent and return. Although, the girl that put on my boot didn’t do a really good job because my foot came out while I was trying to get up from a fall, err, snowboarding. So, be extra careful and make sure it is on there right. I loved how they guys who handled the lifts were nice and considerate. At Ski Apache, they are rude and if you fall while the lifts go 100 miles a minute, they literally pick you up and throw you to the side. They don’t stop the lifts. Here at Durango they will stop the lifts for you to get on or if you fall.
The kids loved, loved tubing. It costs $ 5 per tube. An employee gave me a tip while I was at one of the restaurants. Purchse only the amount of tubes you need not by person. So if you have a little one and he/​she will be sitting on your lap, you only need to pay $ 5 for one hour. Or if your kids will be trading off, buy one tube for the two to use. Trust me, they should trade off because you have to walk up the hill in order to go down on the tube. There are only three lanes. The walk up the hill is a trek! I was exhausted halfway up the hill. My suggestion is to have some kind of escalator or belt (like they have at the airport) to get up to the top of the hill. However, I can understand that if they did that, the price wouldn’t be $ 5. We were there for several hours.
Another tip, if you have a Costco membership, purchase the package for the resort. You get five full-​day lift tickets for about $ 260. Plus, you get discounts for schools and rental. Great deal!

Visited here last week and could not have gotten better days to ski — it was heaven! Bright blue skies, no wind, perfection. We had never skiied here before and drove over from Pagosa Springs (about a 90 minute drive). The green runs were lovely.
Being new skiers, they were easy for us to manage. Our favorite run was Divinity — good grade, beautiful wide open lanes, areas of trees to ski through if you wanted. Well groomed, but they let the snow mobiles drive up the ski runs to get to the backside of the mountain so late in day when it starts to ice, be sure you don’t get caught in their tracks. Pinkerton Toll Road was also a good run — ups and downs and absolutely beautiful.
It’s a bit pricier than Wolf Creek (our main ski place), but was a great experience and the runs are longer. The only thing to watch out — when you come off the green runs, heading for the lifts, (we were on Lift #4), you’ll be on Little Demon & it’s definitey a demon — very fast… so watch out. As a beginner skiier it was very tricky for me.
Lunch at Purgy’s cost us about $ 20 and we just split wings, fries and a water.

Beautiful resort. I found the staff to be kind and helpful. We did the summer activities… a bit expensive but fun never the less.

A totally underwhelming ski experience combined with overwhelming douchy management — welcome to DMR.
The mountain itself isn’t bad, but there are waaaaay better ski resorts in the area. The runs aren’t that great, but hey — at least you can ski here.
My main problem with this resort is with the owners /​management. They recently started to offer «local discount days», which is awesome, but they attach strings to it. You HAVE to present a coupon from the newspaper for EACH person buying a ticket… So, you can be from out of town, present the coupon, and get the discount, which I liked since I’m from Texas. However, my friends who were local did not have the coupon, but had driver’s licenses and Fort Lewis College student Id’s and they were refused the local price. One of my friends even had her electric bill, and they still refused to give her the discount.
Super lame. I won’t be returned to this hill.

Nothing but positive vibes being sent to this place! All the staff are beyond helpful and friendly. Many of them felt like friends by the time our stay was over. I stayed there 4 nights in the summer… there for a wedding. Initially had a room that was a bit small… got upgraded for just a bit more to a one bedroom apartment with a fireplace, full kitchen, living room and dining room. There are lots of daytime activities to do there… hiking, alpine slides, mini golf, rock wall, bungee trampoline (definite must try… so fun), a couple pools, a hot tub with waterfall, indoor gym. Definitely a self-​contained place. The spot our friends got married in was very unique. A clearing in the woods for the altar with a view of all the mountains in the background. Beautiful place to exchange vows.
So lots of daytime activities… not much going on at night there though. For that you go a half hour into town, and the best entertainment is a pregnant chick singing «Like a virgin» in a karaōke bar. I guess you can’t expect much in the way of nightlife for middle of nowhere Colorado.
After staying at the resort we went camping for a night. Upon return DMR allowed us to use the locker rooms to shower and they stored our bags. That is definitely above and beyond, as we had checked out over 24 hours before.
I would definitely stay there again if I were ever in the area again, and definitely recommend to a friend–

Durango is a great little getaway from Phoenix — my daughter and I always get back to Durango for a pre-​season warmup! Its only about a 6.5 hour drive.
Its a great little getaway with some unbelievable snow — the slopes have short runs but there is great snow !! Last season (feb 2007) they have 4 ft snowfall in 48 hours — can you say blizzard!
We always stay in one of the condos directly at the base of the resort with a full kitchen, living room, separate bedroom and fireplace with great views of the mountain. After a full day on the slopes that last thing I want to do is go out for dinner — Im good with a home-​cooked hot meal in front of the fire and tv. The Durango Mountain Resort has direct access to a rooftop pool and hottub. This season the new condo accomodations should be open– so will have to check that out!
