Best Western Mountain Shadows

3.5 stars if I could. Overall I was satisfied for a best western. Parking was small and toilets kept running.

This place was great. We had a broken lock issue and the staff responded really well and tried to make things as convenient as possible for us. Once in the room everything is updated which we were surprised about. Between the beautiful, comfortable rooms and the friendly staff, I would definitely come back here.

If you need a shower and a bed, this will do. Not the Embassy Suites but that’s not what you’re paying for anyway. Room AC was tricky as the vents blow up through the closed curtains until you devise a way to move the air otherwise. Parking lot is small and crowded but we made it work even with a Suburban.
Staff is friendly and WiFi works well… No complaints there.
Strange that I noticed but some of the room entrances are at the end of dark alcoves which could be either a fire hazard or something that women dread.

BWMS is a fine property, and the rate was reasonable ($ 124/​night and $ 140 with all tax included in July) when compared to newer properties around Durango. The service from the staff and property managers is the shining star here.
Due to incldement weather, we had to shorten our stay here and the manager was very flexible in allowing us to cancel our reservation for that night by 11AM on that morning. Nice!
As for their continental breakfast, I liked that they offered a couple of coffee choices to go with the eggs, bacon — and waffles (which had both whipped cream, blueberries & strawberries to be used as toppings… yum!).
The covered pool is a very nice touch for the kids, as it was getting pretty cool out even in July (low 70s). Even the FREE WIFI works at the pool area.
The rooms here are nicely updated but for me personally the bed could have been more firm. My critiques are very picky, but they are anyway; 1.) Why do hotels that put 6 pillows on a bed and each pillow and all are EXACTLY THE SAME TYPE?!! What’s up with that? Don’t they understand that different people may like different pillow types?
2.) My other critical comment was regarding the air conditioner; the desk /​table and the curtains completely blocked the air flow from an otherwise perfect room.
Overall, we like staying in northern Durango and will stay at BWMS again!

This was a challenging review for me. I’m a frequent business traveler in the western U.S. The people here are so darn friendly and helpful I would stay here again for this reason alone and would give a five stars on this personnel quality. Coming in from a day on the road, tired and crabby didn’t phase them. In fact they had me lol during checkin. Unfortunately I have a real problem paying $ 170/​night for an older double queen room and older dated property that is maybe worth $ 100/​night, tops. Would give 2 stars on value. It was only room in town though. Durango is a popular tourist/​resort destination. Supply/​demand rules here. First night the bed was so hard I was up all night and I don’t usually have that problem. The TV is basic w/​HBO and channels but has problems with sound/​reset box. Room was clean. The breakfast although it was the basic precooked bacon and quick mix scrambled eggs it was adequate and ready promptly at 5am. And again in the morning the woman was very friendly and helpful. Great coffee here! Second night got a much better nights sleep with a new room, comfy mattress in a King bed. Room had a sofa for same price. Little more palatable for the price. Didn’t use pool or hot tub. Wifi worked well Maybe the town needs a few more hotels built. More competition to hopefully get these room rates down to a reasonable level. A small business would go broke traveling here for business.

Clean, comfortable, great stay. We stayed here for two nights with no complaints. Staff was friendly. Our family used the pool often and found it and hot tub clean and well maintained. Would recommend this as a place to stay.

The staff at this hotel had the best customer service I have seen in a very long time! I would have given 5 stars if this was The only criteria for rating. The rooms are big and spacious — could use a little updating. The pool and hot tub are in a nice outdoor dome but, could also use some ventilation and better lighting. I can not say enough good things about the awesome staff!

Dustin (Or was it Justin?) was great. Had an awesome stay, as usual, except that I left some articles of clothing in the pool area… By the way, that geodesic dome over the pool and hot tub is such an awesome winter retreat. When I called to ask if they were found, and was told they were, and mentioned I would come by to get them, I arrived to find him outside holding my stuff in a bag. Great customer service all the way through! Will return highly recommend!

Like most retired seniors my wife & I are always looking for good value while traveling. We probably spend more time in the rooms than the younger generation. We carry tablets for reading & keeping in touch so WiFi is a must. Our check list of amenities include, hot breakfast, refrigerator, microwave, & of course a coffee maker. We do a lot of research, reading reviews from several different resources, & normally our picks are pretty darn spot on.
I’m not a fan of hotels without interior corridors, but this was really nice & well cared for. Check-​in was fast & friendly. Our room was clean, quiet, & comfortable, even though the hotel, I think was full of guess both nights. Breakfast was good & plentiful. Coffee was ²⁴⁄₇ in the lobby with lots of options
The WiFi in our room was quite slow during our 2 night stay & almost impossible to even check e-​mails. But other than that our stay was quite adequate & enjoyable. We would definitely stay here again.

As a previous reviewer wrote, this is an older property, but it is impeccably maintained. That’s a hard thing to do, folks, take a property that is a few decades old and maintain it to the extent that everything works perfectly, transparently, and elegantly. This is a reasonably priced hotel, but they have gone to great lengths to include little luxuries that often belong only to hotels in a much higher price range: refrigerator, microwave, excellent shower, additional separate vanity sink outside of the bathroom, ample sensibly placed outlets for charging our many devices, full hot breakfast including do it yourself waffle irons, great coffee from a local roaster, cookies upon check in, and maybe the most beautiful and relaxing pool /​hot tub area I’ve ever seen outside of luxury resorts. Everyone, from the desk clerks to the housekeeping staff to the maintenance people, absolutely everyone who works here is friendly and seems happy to be here, and it shows in the service they provide. This hotel earned an unequivocal recommendation and we will most certainly be back.

The room was beautiful. It’s either new, or newly updated. There were a lot of nice finishes, especially in the bathroom.
I can’t rate it a 5 because — the towels. For the love of all things comfortable, give me a full towel I can wrap around my body and not see through! The bed was a bit firm for my taste, but my husband likes firm. The linens were okay, not great. Overall, though, this is a very nice clean hotel.

My wife and I stayed here 3 nights last week. We booked through HotWire. The breakfast was adequate, although we were never able to sit down to breakfast, the room was way too small for the crowd. On day 2 of our stay, our room still hadn’t been cleaned at 4:00 in the afternoon, and the entire crew of maids had left for the day. The manager of the hotel cleaned our room herself, which I have to say was above and beyond the call of duty. I was a little grumpy, I wasn’t feeling well, and she did everything she could. The room was nice, they’ve been updated with new surfaces, wallpaper, granite, etc. Nice big refrigerator and microwave.
All in all, a very nice stay, but the breakfast seating and maids leave me to only give it 3 stars.

We had the pleasure of staying here for 6 nights while we explored all around Durango and were really happy with the experience from start to finish.
The staff is all very friendly and helpful and the room exceeded my expectations. It was your basic room with fridge/​microwave, which was nice. It felt very clean and the maid/​maintenance service was top notch. The in-​room toiletries were really high end and they even include make up remover face wipes which is an absolute first for me!
The hair dryer in our room was bad and they didn’t have an extra one on hand. An hour later, they arrived with one that we can only guess they ran out and bought just for us. The free breakfast wasn’t that bad either although it was your typical fare. The waffles were tasty though! The spa and pool were a big plus as well, as was the real fruit flavored water they had available in the lobby all the time. Also, having a full on grocery store almost directly across the street is a big plus too for those of you that might need that!
If we could put up one fault, and this is minor, it would be nice if the TV provider gave you a TV Guide-​style channel so you knew what was on at the time.

Great hotel for the money. The kids loved the pool and spa under the dome. Our room was clean with fresh linens and well stocked. Older property but well maintained. Walls on the thinner side and hated the painted brick wall in my room. I would stay there again. Very nice for the price point. Skip the free breakfast, wasn’t worth mentioning.

This is a classic motel that has been updated with lots of granite and is done tastefully. Room was nice and roomy and everything was up to date. I booked this place after seeing some of the reviews of the less expensive motels and, although more expensive, it meet our needs very well. It is too bad that you must pay this much for a decent room these days! The indoor pool and spa worked well and the breakfast was adequate. The bed was nice and firm and we slept very soundly with no noisy neighbors or police coming around like was in the cheaper places.

Great place to stay while in Durango! Everything was clean and no bad or weird smells!!! A little older property but very well kept!

Perfectly functional place, near the big attraction (for me!): the Durango to Silverton railroad! While I was happy to have a clean, affordable place in town, something just was off enough about the place for me to give it 3 not 4 stars. Just an accumulation of small things: rather dark décor (not cheerful), an electrical buzz outside that they eventually cleared up, and a somewhat challenging parking lot to navigate. But the room was large, shower fresh and water hot, and bed comfortable, so I would stay here again.

The lights of the first room we checked into did not work and it smelled like smoke even though it was a nonsmoking room. When we switched rooms the new keys did not work and we needed to go back to the front desk to have them activated. After a rough start to our visit here all was OK. The room was old but functional. The kids loved the pool. Breakfast was ample and the breakfast room was large enought to support the crowd.

Older property very well maintained. For a few bucks more we enjoyed a huge over sized room with mammoth Jacuzzi tub. Big comfy king bed.
I loved the prompt front desk. Though we didn’t try it, this property also has a year round indoor pool.
While the TV was a llat screen, it was very small…

Travelling from Los Angeles to Durango, CO, I wasn’t sure what to expect from local lodgins, but I have to say the Mountain Shadows Best Western is amazing. It’s definitely a step above the standard and the staff insures your stay is comfortable and memorable. I highly recommend this resort motel to anyone!
