They owners sold the business to a couple — the wife came from a restaurant family in the north part of the county. The new owners changed the name to Whistle Stop Café and have kept the menu mostly the same with a few new additions. I’m guessing they’ll add more of their own style over time. They’re doing a great job — Sally has made an effort to remember my name and my wife’s name — a nice touch.

Fabulous coffee!!! I had the veggie breakfast burrito and I would order the same thing if I went back again! We live in San Jose, but we were in Dunsmuir/Mount Shasta for the weekend and we tried this place for breakfast after we had dinner at Sengthongs(same owners) the night before. I would go there again, just for the coffee. Very good service, and flavorful food!

It is sooo nice to have a place to go for breakfast and lunch in this area where I know whatever I order will be delicious; prepared and served with care by the owners themselves. I usually order the Country Breakfast when I’m there before noon and the Mountain Burger with grilled onions, fresh tomato, lettuce and cheese served on a ciabata bun that comes with superb french fries that remind me of French«pomme frites». Not greasy, deliciously seasoned. The coffee is organic and from a local roaster. I go once a week, but I think about going there every time I’m hungry! I should add that it is also very fairly priced, and the service is fast, friendly and consistent. 6÷27÷2013

We visited this place on our way to Lassen. We were welcomed by a super friendly steward. He was pretty cool, joked around and tried to be friendly. He brought our drinks and took our breakfast order. There are no refills on orange juice, which is fine, he offered to bring us some water and forgot about it. Our food came after about 40 minutes. He is all talk and no business. We make a point to try local restaurants when we travel, but the food here felt no different than eating at McDs. My wife ordered Oatmeal and I got a seafood omelet. McDs brownsugar oatmeal tasted the same or better and the seafood omelet was soggy. A couple next to us asked to speak with the manager because their food took so long to come and eventually left. If you are travelling and want to try a local place, try something else. If you are missing McD(they don’t have any in Dunsmuir) go dine here.

My family and I went in for breakfast, and were amazed at the friendly atmosphere and staff, FANTASTIC food, and great service! As well as the crazy delicious omelets and scrambles, we ordered a pancake on the side that was so large that it took all three of us to finish it! Our only regret was that we wish we had had bigger stomachs to eat more! We will be back many, many times in the future! Thank you McGuire’s!

My fiancé and I dined here for breakfast on our weekend getaway and were quite disappointed with our experience. The eggs I ordered poached were a blip away from hard boiled, the Black Forest ham was like a thin sheet of leather, and the hash browns were comparable to, if not, frozen. My fiancé ordered what is usually his favorite breakfast, country fried steak with biscuits and gravy. He later had a nasty, upset stomach as a result.

We had breakfast here twice this weekend and it was delicious! We tried biscuits and gravy, the breakfast burrito, one of the scrambles, and a specialty coffee. Everything was excellent! If you are looking for a delicious and filling meal, go here for breakfast or lunch. And then head to Sengthong’s for dinner. The two restaurants are owned by the same family and the food both places is wonderful.

There have only been a few times in my life I’ve wished for a bigger stomach(while eating) so that I can eat some more of whatever it is I am consuming at the moment and this was one of them. Who knew that a half of a club sandwich and a cup of home made clam chowder could do that to me? The potatoes in the clam chowder were cut big and I usually hate any potatoes in my clam chowder and maneuver around them but I ate all of my potatoes and wished I could have more. Amazing taste. I wish they were a restaurant in my ‘hood!

I’m not wild about sandwiches but lunch here was the best I have had in ages! Worth timing your drive on Highway 5 to be here at mealtime.

Went there this morning and what a great experience! The food was great and the waiter was perfect! If you are looking in this area Mcguire’s is worthy of your time.

If your traveling up or down I-5, or a local, this is the best breakfast/lunch stop. Just off I-5 in Dunsmuir you should treat yourself to a great breakfast or lunch. Great omelets and sandwiches. The chicken fried steak withe the biscuit and gravy is worth the drive from Mount Shasta. Good wait staff, very attentive and they always keep your coffee cup full. So next time forget the fast food joints treat yourself to the best diner food while traveling on I-5 in Siskiyou county.

Most delicious burger I have had in a while. Great friendly ambience and clearly a lot of locals like this place. I plan to stop in here every time I pass Shasta from now on. My wife says the chicken breast sandwich was excellent, best she has had.

Great diner breakfast food! We had delicious chicken fried steak, sawmill gravy, biscuit, hashbrowns and a truly great omelet. I loved that the omelet was filled with ingredients and was not soggy or overcooked. It was the perfect omelet. The coffee was really good too and my husband liked their chai a lot. Really nice people and a great spot for breakfast. The sandwiches and salads looked great and we will be back to try them.

We were a blend of travelers from Sacramento and San Francisco working our way up I-5 to the Oregon Coast for an Easter getaway. We wanted to avoid the chains — of course — so we traveled through Dunsmuir on its real, genuine, main street, complete with a hardware store that sells toys and toy trains(befitting railroad town Dunsmuir). We stopped here at the recommendation of the gas station south of town, and from this humble referral we had one of those fine and wonderful experiences that non-chain dining can be. Everything was perfect — the food, the special(but non-intrusive) attention of the proprietor, and best of all, the décor. The proprietor has apparently accumulated group photos from the past 100 years or so and they are all hung on the walls of the restaurant. From group photos set in San Francisco(Presidio, the 1915 Fair) to groups of nuns in Des Moine(circa 1895; rare, since nuns were not commonly photographed back then) to middle schoolers in 1953(judging by the impeccable dress of the 300 or so kids, we have something to learn from 1953). And toy trains — operating toy trains. Not huge sets of them. Just large enough to fit in and fill a storefront window. My child’s jacket was damp. No problem. There’s an operating wood stove too. In all, this is genuine, excellent home cooking in a fascinating and uncontrived setting. Wonderful place.

If your traveling through or a resident of this area, I would give this place a try. I had the pepperoni sandwich which was very good, but what was great was the homemade soup. While there was nothing wrong with the sandwich, the soup was worth the whole visit. It is homemade and the flavor of it was excellent. This was my first time there, and I intend to try it a few more times. The inside of the restaurant has a lot of old photos of the people who used to live and work in Dunsmuir. This is a nice place to take a date or a family. I highly recommend it.
