History

Established in 1970.

The Maresh family moved to Dundee, Oregon in 1959 and in 1970 were the first in Oregon to convert a working farm to a vineyard. Part of building any community is giving back, and founders Jim and Loie Maresh went above and beyond. They not only helped many of their neighbors with their vineyards, but protected the Dundee Hills farmland and helped build the famous reputation of the Dundee Red Hills AVA.

The Maresh Red Barn Tasting Room came about as an offshoot of the Maresh’s vineyard business. While drinking a $ 20 bottle of Pinot, Jim and Loie suddenly realized that the winery had paid them only $ 2 for the grapes to make it. Voila! Rather than sell grapes for cash, they decided to make wine, and the Tasting Room was born. The greatest reward was not monetary, but rather the many enduring friendships formed over the ten years Jim and Loie ran the tasting room. It continues to operate today with wines from daughter Martha, her husband Steven, and grandson Jim.

Meet the Business Owner

Jim Maresh S.

Business Owner

Meeting Jim Maresh is like meeting a slice of Oregon history, a force to be reckoned with and one of the pioneers of the Oregon wine industry since planting his first grapevines in 1970. He profoundly influenced the direction of Oregon’s future, helping protect Oregon farm laws by pushing through legislation and agricultural zoning protections.

Beyond all the trappings and tales he is a farmer. It is his care for the land that has built his legacy, and his roots are fully grounded in his 160 acre vineyard.

In 2013, at the age of 87, Jim still works the land and is proud of every inch of it, knows every vine and plot inside and out. Like any true farmer he has his favorite spots. He says that different parts of his vineyard grow different styles of Pinot noir, sort of like his children — a unique strength to each block. His favorite Block 3 reminds him of his wife Loie: mellow, smooth, and feminine with unique depth, making practically perfect wine.
