The Firelight Inn on Oregon Creek Bed and Breakfast

My husband and I have been staying at The Firelight Inn since 2002. We wanted a short, but luxurious honeymoon after we got married, and I found The Inn while searching for the best honeymoon spots/B&Bs in Minnesota. I came upon the website for The Inn and was impressed with it and decided to reserve the Northwoods Suite for our first stay there. We have been hooked ever since!
We’ve stayed in and like all of the rooms, and our favorite rooms are the Superior Suite, the Barnum Suite, the Brookside Suite, and the Isle Royale Suite. Each time we have stayed at The Firelight Inn, it’s like a new experience – different, yet the same. The house and rooms remain beautiful, comfortable, luxurious and tranquil, and each room simply evokes love and romance. The personal delivery of breakfast in the morning simply spoils us, and the food is MAGNIFICENT! One of my favorite amenities is the butler’s pantry on the first floor, where there is ²⁴⁄₇ access to cups, mugs, plates, silverware, napkins, ice, cold drinks, gourmet coffee, cream, freshly baked cookies and other homemade treats, candy, and anything else you might need in between! Jim and/​or Joy will even take the time to chat it up with you if you happen to see them in passing. They are so friendly, warm, funny, and attentive!
I honestly don’t know how anyone could ever have a bad time here, as Jim and Joy have always been more than accommodating and reasonable. As long as you let them know ahead of time about any special need (s) you may have or let them know of any problem, they will honor your request (s) or try to work with you to resolve the problem. For example, during one of our stays a few years ago when I was a vegetarian, I let Jim and Joy know about this. Joy honored my request and made tofu scramble with TONS of fresh veggies and fresh fruit as part of my breakfast each day as well. I appreciated that very much!
My husband and I HIGHLY RECOMMEND staying at The Firelight Inn for retreats, honeymoons, anniversaries, quick getaways, or even some much-​needed down time by yourself. Whatever the reason, you will LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this place! We can’t wait for our next trip! :)

This was such a sweet B&B. I found it through some random Googling, but so happy I stumbled upon it. Until Firelight Inn, I thought B&B’s always entailed the communal breakfast table, full of awkward small talk with awkward strangers. Not this introvert’s idea of a vacation. Behold, a B&B that will deliver your breakfast in a basket to your door! A full breakfast too, not just continental. More on that in a bit.
When we first arrived, we were greeted at the front door by Jim and Joy. Joy was chatting with another couple who were staying at the inn, and Jim gave us a quick tour of the house, including interesting tidbits on its history. The common areas of the house was like a step back in time, in a good way — original light fixtures, molding, hardwood floors, fireplace tile, etc. He showed us the music/​movie library, the pantry with a coffee/​tea machine and fresh baked cookies (and other snacks to help yourself to), and then led us upstairs to show us our suite. He made sure we knew the basics of the room and then left us to our devices, assuring us that he and Joy would be available if we had any questions.
The Isle Royale room was cozy and inviting, with a super plush bed and comfy sheets. Had a great night of sleep, but since there aren’t any heavy drapes on the windows, the sun did wake me up several times in the morning — bring an eye mask if you are sensitive to this and want to sleep in. The whirlpool tub right in the room was probably my favorite part (note that they ask you to refrain from adding any extra things to the tub besides the mineral salts they set out — unfortunately, this means no goodies from Lush to spice up your bath. Sad but I can deal with that). There’s a TV/​DVD player, a clock with an iPod dock, and speakers that you can hook up your iPhone to via your USB charging cord. There is free wifi but it’s a bit spotty so streaming music might not work 100% of the time. If you decide to watch a movie at the end of your day exploring Duluth, there’s an eclectic collection to choose from; everything from Juno to Indiana Jones to Django Unchained.
On the morning of our stay, we were served two plates of scrambled hash, fresh fruit, freshly baked muffins and coffee cake, and two dishes each of triple berry crumble. Also a pitcher of orange juice and freshly brewed, local coffee. It was filling and delicious. I liked that the basket is left at your door at 9 am, so we could sleep in a bit.
We were only here for one night, but I think if we stayed longer next time, we would hang out in the common areas a bit more; especially on the enclosed wrap-​around porch that overlooks the creek. I could see coming here in the winter too, and just escaping to a cozy room with your own fireplace, taking baths all day long, reading, and hanging out with your loved one.
Jim and Joy made us feel really welcome and we will definitely be back. They have definitely hit on the right way to do a B&B!

Jim and Joy have created a haven of romance here. The firelight and décor create the ambience, but Jim and Joy give the Inn it’s warmth! From the personal greeting on your arrival to the heartfelt, «Please come again» on your departure, the warmth exuded is enveloping. As you leave your shoes at the door, the outside world dissolves. It becomes all about you as a couple. Jim and Joy have set the stage, you get to write your experience. Our 40^th anniversary was the occasion, and we could not have done better anywhere! It was high praise from my husband when with a big smile he said, «I am so glad you pushed for us to come here, we will be back!» So go and enjoy the magic that is The Firelight Inn. You will not be disappointed!

Visited again, just as awesome. Sumptuous breakfasts served hot and in a basket at your door to be enjoyed privately and at your own pace. More perfect that the fresh baked breakfast bread basket served along with your breakfast is excessive enough that it makes an awesome afternoon snack. (But please don’t stop Jim and Judy, please!) The quality of their bedding is marvelous and the complimentary robes and oversize towels add that amount of luxury that makes the firelight different. The truly two person sized whirlpool tubs make it my favorite place. And Jim and Judy, perfect hosts.

P and I went to Duluth for our honeymoon. We are fans of the B&Bs but not the small talk required for the breakfast. P found the Firelight Inn and I am glad he did. First the rooms are tastefully decorated. No scary dolls or over flowery décor. Second, breakfast is served to you in your room. Yeah no small talk.
We decided one night to order the soup supper. I highly recommend this. The soup was amazing and filling.
Overall we had a wonderful experience and will more than likely come again.

The Firelight Inn was the most romantic place I have been to within the United States. Jim and Joy really have made the B&B experience the most enjoyable. I would love to come back in the summer as well. We were welcomed when we drove up the drive. Our suite was just that sweet! Breakfast was so yum and the endless hot coco and sugar cookies was a great edition. If you want a truly unique experience The Firelight Inn is a must!

Don’t stay here of you would like to see Duluth. The owners work very hard to make it unthinkable to leave your room and this wonderul mansion. Thinking about heading out early? No. The breakfast will ensure you don’t. When you smell it from upstairs, you will abandon all thoughts of leaving your bed before 11am. The breakfasts are truly amazing. I also highly recommend the wild rice soup which can be had on the first night as an option. It is no ordinary wild rice soup.
My girlfriend and I have stayed twice this year so far. Once for Valentine’s and once just because. We will be back two more times before the year is out, I am sure.

Rarely do you meet two people who’ve found their calling in life. Jim and Joy have thought of every detail and know how to make people feel welcomed and well cared for. Pluses include an outstanding breakfast delivered to your door each morning. So if you’ve avoided B&B’s because of the community breakfasts most serve, fear not! Massage services are also available on site. They will suggest restaurants, make reservations or print out a list of events and happenings in the area for you. Complimentary coffee and teas and Joy’s home made cookies are available around the clock. Their historical home is a lovely retreat at the end of a street in a quiet neighborhood filled with other beautiful homes.
