My 10 year old has been taking lessons and singing in choirs for several years now. We have been 1 year with Lisa and we have seen tremendous improvement in our daughter’s ability to sing. She has improved all around — techniques, vocal quality, breath control. Lisa could immediately tell what my daughters strengths and weaknesses were and tailored her lessons accordingly. Also, there is really no fooling around on lessons — Lisa gets right to it and makes the most of the time. Not only is Lisa a superb voice coach, she is a genuinely nice person. I would recommend her highly.

I have been asked why I drive to Duluth for voice lessons. It is a bit ridiculous, I admit. The truth is that I knew I wanted to take lessons when I moved to Atlanta many months before moving to Atlanta. I can carry a tune just fine but my actual vocal muscles aren’t that well trained, and I want to be able to sound nice singing solos, mainly in karaōke, but also for a cappella groups. So I used google, and Lisa was one of the few teachers with a website, and the only one who seemed a good fit for me.
She teaches singing in «mixed voice,» that is, sounding like you’re in chest voice in high range, which is good for pop singing and solos in general. I have not been disappointed with the results so far — she uses exercises that may seem strange, and don’t sound good themselves, but I’ve found that they work.
The lessons are $ 40 for half an hour. You provide a blank CD at the start of each lesson, and she records it for you so you can practice with it during the week. Generally the first half of a lesson is exercises, and the second half you work on a song of your choice.
But she is also extremely flexible, and will help you with whatever you want to practice. She helped me prepare for two a cappella auditions, and I made one of the groups — and now she can help me with music from that group if something’s difficult. Last week I asked her to help me sing more comfortably in the very high ranges, and the CD of that lesson’s exercises are a really really useful warmup for me.
I also find her very likable as a person. She’s young and pretty, on top of technology, has a sense of humor, and is honest without being harsh. She has definitely improved my confidence as well as my singing.
I’m pretty sure Lisa teaches mainly if not exclusively women, and I think a lot of her students are kids. But I would definitely recommend her if it’s possible for you to sneak up to Duluth once a week.
