History

Established in 1839.

First Congregational United Church of Christ began ministering to the needs of the people of Dubuque on May 12, 1839. Our warm and historic sanctuary was built in 1860. When Robert E. Lee surrendered at Appomattox on April 9, 1865, the members of the congregation rang the church bell through the night to celebrate the advent of peace in these United States. The exuberant celebration resulted in the bell cracking! Today, we are a welcoming and open church for all people. No matter what, no matter who, no matter where you are on life’s journey, you are welcome here at First Congregational Church of Dubuque.
