My son Rohan was referred to Dr. Friedman because he showed signs of being «highly allergic» to something. At the time, Rohan was about a year and a half old. We had no idea what to expect. We thought maybe he was allergic to mold or milk or something. So, we went to the appointment with Dr. Friedman completely unprepared for what was about to happen.
Dr. Friedman is an affable, energetic man. He talked with Rohan and asked us questions, then his nurse quickly and expertly gave Rohan the necessary needle pricks to determine what he’s allergic to.
The doctor returned to assess the results, and informed us that Rohan has an allergy to tree nuts, specifically cashews and pistachios.
I was stunned. «Wait a minute. Don’t people DIE from that?»
«Well, it happens. But honestly, it’s more dangerous for you to drive him to my office than it is for him to be allergic to tree nuts. We just have to make some changes to his diet. Don’t worry about it. We’ll handle this.»
That line – that driving in a car is more dangerous than this allergy – really helped me put this allergy into perspective. Yeah, we could have panicked about the fact that we have to carry Epi-​Pens for Rohan, but Dr. Friedman’s laid back demeanor gave us peace. It’s something that we have to deal with, but it doesn’t control our lives.
Dr. Friedman gave us all his contact information – his pager, his home phone, his cell phone – and told us if Rohan ever has a severe reaction, we are to call him after calling the ambulance. I love how he both reassured us and gave us action steps JUST IN CASE something happens.
Dr. Friedman also told us what we should say to Rohan about his allergy. He’s now three and a half, and he knows that he can’t have certain foods because they have nuts in them. A month or so ago, he went to a birthday party and of course he wanted some of the cake. However, when we told him he couldn’t have it because it has nuts in it, he was fine and didn’t ask again.
There is a special place in my heart for Dr. Friedman, and I recommend him to people any chance I can. He is both competent and calming, and that has made all the difference to us.
