Cactus & Tropicals

We stumbled upon this place on a rainy day. Kasey greeted us and was welcoming throughout our visit. She had great knowledge of the plants we had questions about and made us feel confident in our purchases.
Plenty of different plants and they also host events. Absolutely beautiful building inside & outside. I highly recommend visiting. Great place to find a unique gift!

My wife loves this place. And I love it too, because they make choosing gifts for those who love plants. I often make a bee-​line to the clearance-​priced cart that they typically have sitting against the far wall, because I like to save my money (and their clearance plants are usually still in great condition). The place can be pretty pricey, but I find the same of other nurseries of similar quality. I also recommend signing up for their customer rewards program. I get coupons that I can use to save even more money when I head over to get something for the wife.

When I had a transaction the cashier answered her cell phone and couldn’t answer any of my questions. I can spend money at other nurseries and get better service. If I could I would give this no stars.

Called here to see if I could get flowers/​plants delivered and I spoke with Victoria who was nothing short of perfect and helpful. She put together a custom arrangement for me and actually called me back to let me know exactly what she was putting into the arrangement and how it would be presented. I also liked them because they have more than just the typical arrangement. Roses and the typical arrangement are so cliché and these arrangements bring something different and lost longer. It was a perfect added touch to someone’s day and to get out of the doghouse… just kidding… kind of

We had our wedding reception here. The place is beautiful and sets up quite nice. The staff were great at helping us get the place ready. Great atmosphere. The only thing that would have been better is if there was a kitchen area to prepare food. If you want to cater yourself you’ll need to bring everything prepared and stuff to warm food if needed. We did and it worked out just fine.

PICK & CHOOSE THE LOCATION & bring a lot of $$$$
I have been on a hunt for a specific citrus tree I found that cactus & Tropicals was the ONLY place in the entire state that had it.
I read reviews before going, so I knew they were expensive but WOW the prices are really about doubled on everything! (However, if your like me & you want something that you cant get anyplace else (except online & then you take your chances). well what can ya do…)
I first went to the SLC store, but left empty handed as the prices they wanted for the trees was $ 91 but they were teeny tiny like two branches & the trunks (being grafted) weren’t any bigger around than a finger — if that. Not worth that kind of money for the quality this store had.
The customer service at that store was poor to say the least. I obviously interrupted staff during their socializing time.
At another time I had a question & the staff were hanging out in their back area again socializing (different folks). The long hair blonde guy acted so put out to have to answer questions. Their pots were about tripled in price compared to countless other places.
I went to the Draper location next.
Completely different experience! The customer service at the Draper location is A++, helpful and friendly. Doesn’t get any better!
My business will now always go to the Draper location.
I much prefer the Draper store it has more of an upscale feel & is beautifully decorated. It is much larger and seems to have healthier plants and trees. I did purchase the tree I was looking for from this location and it was much better fuller and healthier. I think this location got the better stock or they just take better care of them at this location. No one seemed put out by customers asking questions, they had more of a professional appearance and I didn’t notice groups of staff in gab sessions hoping people wouldn’t interrupt them. I will be going back for another tree soon.
Just a quick note — I am not the typical Utah person who’s tight. I’m from the East Coast & don’t mind spending money on something as long as its quality. However, I consider myself quite the deal finder as well. I also read reviews and am doing more so now. It used to be only restaurants but there’s reviews on about anyplace now.
PRICING —
Very High, lets take pots for example I saw a pot that was identical to one at another store. At the other store the pot was $ 80. I about fell over when I saw the EXACT same pot in their store for almost triple the price. Frankly, I would NEVER buy a pot at this store just because they are outrageously priced.
The plants and trees — depending on what your looking for you are going to pay high $$$. This store can charge these prices because they are almost a one of a kind store here. I called probably every nursery and the like within a couple hundred mile radius. This store was the only place that had what I wanted. I’m positive the prices are at least doubled on plants and trees. But again, if you want it, you’ll pay. For those who think the pricing is fair, you obviously haven’t been to nurseries and the like in other states.
No matter what store you go to, it is an interesting experience and there is lots to look at.
Now onto the Overview —
The SLC store —
The Good — They have a large variety, the location is a little more convenient.
The Bad — Horrible customer service, prices, mainly large trees. Did I mention HORRIBLE Customer Service!
THE DRAPER STORE —
The Good — Beautiful Store, More of an Upscale feel, A++ customer service (It doesn’t get any better) Healthier, fuller, plants and trees.
The Bad — Could have a larger selection, Prices
The Draper store is the only reason they get 3 stars — If I had never gone to the SLC location Id have given 4. The outrageous prices disqualify Cactus and Tropicals for a 5 star rating.

Cactus & Tropicals is a fun place to visit and explore. They have a wonderful inventory of healthy plants of all types, varieties and sizes for home, office, and garden. They also carry many garden and plant accessories such as pots and some tools.
For gift giving occasions like mother’s day or birthdays, Cactus & Tropicals has great gifts for moms or that special someone. Why buy someone cut flowers when you can given them a live plant that will last for months or even years? The cost is about the same, but there is a lot more value in giving a live plant because it will last much longer. Cactus & Tropicals also provides a free «gift wrapping» service. Pick out a plant and they’ll wrap it with a beautiful ribbon and bow of your choosing and provide care instructions as well. They’ll also re-​pot plants for you if you find a pot you like better.
Besides being an active nursery and garden shop, Cactus & Tropicals also rents out their greenhouse and store for weddings and receptions. We attended a friend’s wedding here a few years ago and it was beautiful! There were plants everywhere of course and it added an outdoor feeling to an indoor wedding, which was fun.
For so many reasons Cactus & Tropicals gets a five star rating from me.

DO NOT HAVE YOUR WEDDING OR RECEPTION AT CACTUS & TROPICALS IN DRAPER! Save your money and go anywhere but here. Honestly. Colleen and her staff are some of the rudest, arrogant and uncooperative people in the business I’ve come across. I have been a professional wedding emcee for several years now and I’ve never experienced such poor responsiveness, unaccountability and such terrible customer service. Bring a back-​up mic in case their wireless microphone doesn’t work due to their unstable satellite/​antenna (which they are not responsible for, according to Colleen, because they «can’t control the weather») or just make sure your wedding official can shout super loudly. Have more guests show up than you accounted for? Have them stand because they won’t accommodate extra tables or chairs for you. (Actually they will, you just have to pay for it.) Oh, and bring an umbrella to avoid getting dripped on from their super leaky ceiling that falls on your clothing and on your food. We literally had puddles of dirty ceiling water on our tables. And did they do anything about it? Wipe them down, offer an apology, anything? Nope. They completely ignored us! When I addressed these concerns with Colleen, she curtly responded with a fake smile, «That’s not my problem. You pay for what you get.»

Draper store is beautiful, plants looked great. We have been to C&T on several occasions in SLC and they seem to have a good reputation. We asked about special ordering a particular plant and filled out their yellow form. She was not sure whether she could get the plants but said she would be in touch. About 2 weeks later I called and talked to a guy who was not listening to my question: Was she able to order them? He kept thining I was asking if they were in yet. When he realized what I was asking, he said he didn’t know but that I should call back later.
Over the next 2 weeks, I left three msgs. on the «shipping and receiving» option at the Draper store. No one called back. Today I went in, and someone called the «order person» and finally let me know that they were not in fact able to order at this time.
Very disappointed in lack of customer service and follow up. We will buy elsewhere from now on.

This is an amazing nursery!!! They had so many indoor plants and I finally found a great lemon tree at such a good price! $ 55 dollars is pretty cheap for a good size flowering tree! I can’t wait to go back and the lady that helped me answered all my questions and was so kind. I will by all means be visiting this beautiful nursery again!

I stopped by Cactus & Tropicals to get a unique gift for my mom’s birthday, based on all of the good word of mouth that I’ve heard about this business. I had high expectations going into the experience, and I wasn’t disappointed.
A woman who works there helped me select a great flowering plant, and when I mentioned that it was for my mom, she gift wrapped that thing like a champ. Even though it’s been about a month since I bought the plant, it’s still blooming! My mom brags on it every time I visit.
It’s not the cheapest place around, but it’s worth it to me to pay a little extra for a knowledgeable, helpful staff and and incredible selection. I’ll go back the next time I want a great gift that will leave an impression.

I’m a proud plant nerd. Whenever I’m lucky enough to have a couple of extra hours, I wander through Cactus & Tropicals dreaming of all the exotic plants I’d love to adopt.
They have a superb selection of quality indoor and outdoor plants, and a nice line of accessories; so, you pick out your own container and they will repot your new guy into it for you! They have the standard set, and then many plants that you don’t see around here anywhere else. They carry plant food, pest control, and other items that you can pick up while you’re there if you choose. They also offer botanical classes, and a helpful website.
We have purchased many plants, large and small, from Cactus & Tropicals. I love chatting with the staff about plant care. They’re always very helpful and friendly. I’ve often gone back to attend their classes; and gone back to talk to them about plant issues. And they even smile when they have to walk you around the whole place because you can’t decide which of their lovely green things to take home…
I wanted to avoid including a «but,» but… here it comes — they are NOT cheap. Their plants are nicely taken care of, and basically have been grown in a huge greenhouse. So you’re getting a good product. We’re very persnickety about the plants we purchase, and we’ve never felt ripped off. You will feel a little tinge when you pull out your wallet, though.

I have bought a few orchids, succulents, and ficus here. I also bought a ficus retusa bonsai and a really cool low light plant for my office space.
Every time I go in, there is this one guy in particular who I go to to answer all my questions. He knows everything! Not only that, he’ll re-​pot and dress up a plant like nobody I’ve ever seen. I usually choose my own pot, then I let him go to work.
I’ve had one or two other people there help me, and they’re almost equally as good. I could just go there to relax — it’s got such a nice vibe. Being surrounded by so many unique plants feeling a tiny bit of humidity for a change is a welcome experience.
If you can spend a few bucks extra for your greenery, you can’t beat the quality and service of Cactus & Tropicals. I’m a fan for life.
