Port of Miami Tunnel

This tunnel is great. Cleverly designed to keep water above and around it, without getting on the road. And it does it’s job… keeps the water off the road and everything.
But seriously, the hired drivers I have used have lauded how much it has improved traffic to the cruise terminal. One joked that it would be cool if it was made of glass to see the sea life, however it might cause a number of accidents.
It would totally get 5 starts if it were wider and you could see the sea life. As it is, 4-​stars is all I can give.

Best thing to open in Miami in a while. Now I’m not afraid of making a wrong turn or sitting in event traffic when going to/​from the port.
It’s about 15 mins quicker too!

Very cool new tunnel taking you straight through to the Port of Miami. The best part… you get to miss all the downtown traffic! Great move, Miami!

Wow! Had my first ride through the Port of Miami (now renamed Port Miami Tunnel) Tunnel, all 4200 feet of it as bored undersea connecting Watson Island with Port Miami on Dodge Island. Though long termed to have been a «pork barrel» project, I happen to be one who believes its $ 1 billion in costs as money well spent when considering the importance of the tunnel to the port, the cruise industry, tourist/​hospitality businesses and to Miami itself. With traffic already exceeding 7,000 vehicles a day, it’s a welcome relief to the ever growing congestion of Miami traffic.
Besides that, it’s a beauty of a tunnel, two lanes in either direction and for a tunnel, neat and as picturesque as any bored out hole in the ground could be. The inscription on the portals lend classical aesthetics to its appearance.
It marks the second tunnel in Florida, second to the much smaller Henry E. Kinney Tunnel of Fort Lauderdale (I don’t count the Utilidors tunnel of Disney World… that’s a part of the Magic Kingdom) which carries A1A traffic underneath the New River.

After the opening ceremony on May 19, 2014 and delays due to non-​functioning fans and leakage found in one if the pipes, the Port of Miami tunnel is finally opened. Port of Miami used the port bridge as its only entry and exit points. Therefore, building the tunnel was an alternative connection to the mainland. It provides direct access between the seaport, I-​395 and I-​95. The port is Miami’s second moneymaker after the airport, which is the reason to keep it competitive by building the tunnel to aid the traffic congestion in downtown.
I was able to drive through it on the first day it was opened to the public and what a cool experience. The first ever tunnel in Miami, with two lanes, left is for regular cars and the right for trucks. Large ventilation fans sit above you and neon lights everywhere. The design is sleek. As you’re driving, you would never guess you were under approximately 120 feet below the surface. If you enter though the I-​395 you end up magically at the seaport and vice versa.
If you’re a pedestrian or cyclist, unfortunately it’s off limits at this time, although you may see walkways within the tunnel.
The tunnel is approximately 4,200 feet in length. There’s no toll and it is free to use.
