John G. McAllister, DDS

I used to be deathly afraid of dentists because I felt pain every time regardless of the procedure. With Dr. McAllister he always takes time to pause during a procedure and ask if I can feel anything, If I do then he goes back and gives me more numbing medication making my experience painless every time. Been coming here for about three or four years now.

Very personal, spends quality time during your visit. He is very conservative. All the staff is super sweet and very educational. Different from any other office, they give you choices to relax during your treatment. Good with kids of all ages.

Ever since we found Dr. McAllister in 2011, we have had wonderful experience after wonderful experience. How many dentists offices can you say that about? Dr. McAllister is patient, kind and very skilled. The entire staff gets to know you and you can tell that they love what they do by the quality of care that each person gives. They also value your time. They only schedule as many patients as they can see during the appointment time given so you are not sitting in a waiting room forever. I can not say enough about this office. They are simply the best.

I have been going to Dr. McAllister for a couple of years now and I couldn’t be more pleased. Jane, the hygienist is superb and very thorough. She truly cares about your oral health. Claudia and Vivian are super sweet. The staff treats you like family greeting you by your first name when you arrive. That hasn’t happened to me at other Dental Offices I have been to. The office is small but very clean and efficient with the space they have.
Dr. McAllister has a gentle touch and takes his time. You don’t feel rushed or anything like that. Another thing I like about this dental office is that they are efficient in how they schedule their appointments. I have never had to wait more than maybe a couple of minutes after I arrive for my appointments. I know someone commented about the lack of people in the waiting room… I think that is a good thing. It shows that the office is respectful of their patients’ time and doesn’t overbook like other offices. Other places make you wait forever and they treat you like a number. Oh yeah and I love that I can walk to my appointments. I highly recommend this dentist!

I really enjoyed my visit with John he is a very polite honest dentist with a gentle touch, he worked with my insurance and actually did a little more to my teeth, I left feeling good and most of all with a nice clean mouth I look forward to brining my kids as they grow older to experience a great dentist, from the staff to himself the moment you walk in they make you feel like family, to me that goes along way since the dentist isn’t always a fun experience, I really recommend him for any of your dental needs

Dr. McAllister is an instructor for the Periolase gum surgery laser. I was his student years ago and we’ve had discussions on quality of care for patients, I know that he is always doing the best for his patients and I know that he stands behind his work. He’s shown me some of his cases where patients who would have ended up in full dentures ended saving their teeth. Amazing! To this day, whenever I have a question about the Periolase, he is totally willing to get back to me quickly, even when he is busy. My previous review of him was taken down, probably from a complaint from a competitor of his. It seems as thing he has been under attack from a local competitor of his which is too bad. So my review is for Dr. McAllister the laser surgery instructor, he’s is very knowledgeable and a great teacher. I’m sure he’s a fantastic practitioner too!

I just started going to John McAllister, been there twice.
His staff is very friendly, he and his staff were very thorough and informative with my initial exam.
I went into my second appointment with the hygienist recently and found her to be very good at what she does. I’ve known that I have some issues with receding gums, gingivitis, etc. and was proposed laser therapy. A treatment method I have do doubt he’s good at, as he teaches this to other dentists. Just not on top of my priority list:-)

I chose Dr. McAllister because he utilizes a relatively new procedure called LANAP. It’s a laser treatment which is an alternative to traditional gum surgery/​bone grafting/​implants. Dr. Mcallister not only performs this procedure, but also teaches it to other dentists. I found this out by doing some research online.
Let me say that my situation was pretty bad. Swollen gums, infection, severe bone loss, pockets in the double digits. Dr. McAllister didn’t sugar coat my situation, but he also didn’t make me feel like a hopeless case (as did the first periodontist I saw). He was upfront about what to expect but didn’t try to sell me on the procedure. I think he knew I’d made up my mind already. He did seem very passionate about this procedure and was very clear that he likes to do whatever he can to SAVE teeth. Novel idea, huh? I wish all dentists had that goal.
So, let me continue on to the EXCELLENT staff. They are warm, friendly, professional, and very attentive. They gave me a pillow for my head, a blanket in case I got chilly, netflix, and a massage. Sounds more like a spa than a dentist, right?
During the procedure (2 surgeries) The Dr. was very gentle, careful, and in tune with how I was feeling. At one point I started to clench my fist and he stopped immediately to ask if I needed more anesthesia.
I’m still in the recovery process and won’t really know how successful this treatment was. I will most likely have to do it again but for the first time in a year, my gums feel normal and my mouth is pain-​free.
I will post an update soon, but for now, I highly recommend this office.

I am giving the star for the staff. They all were very kind and professional. However in all the years of seeing various dentists, I have yet to walk into an office where the dentist was not with any patients nor had any waiting. Children were having their teeth cleaned but no adult patients. I went in with a lump under my jaw. I expected the dentist to give me a full oral exam as every dentist I’ve been to for the 1^st time has done. He just sat there with a mouthguard for teeth grinding and asking if I thought I needed one. He never examined me. The assistant took X-​Rays and it cost me over $ 125.00 for that. Then told me if I needed further dental work, they send me out somewhere else for that.
I am still looking for that old fashioned, honest dentist with years experience and know how. And that uses his real name for the office.

You did horrible treatment on them in your SFV office.
Your fillings all failed and we had to put our children to sleep to fix their teeth at another location.
This guy is a Showman, a REAL Hustler, A Fraud.

I’m very happy with this dentist office. Everyone treated me very well. It’s the cleanest office I’ve ever been in. I will continue to go there. The staff is awesome.

I went for my first visit today and was beyond impressed. This office has a great team and they all seem to really love what they do and do it well! They explain EVERYTHING they are doing and let you see all of their imaging as they review it. The cleaning was very thorough, did an ultrasonic scaling AND hand scaling oh AND flossed! talk about being thorough! Lisa did a great job AND was very gentle. The assistant I got (I wish I remembered her name!!) was so nice and professional, she broke every process down for me and asked several times if I was okay. I love this office so far. I highly recommend it.

0 Stars. First of all how can a professional act so unprofessional? Dr. McAllister does not stand by his work. I paid $ 3000 to have him put a cap that broke a couple months later. Dr. McAllister said to make an appointment and come back so that he can fix it.
I stuck to the appointment and got there about 15 minutes early and Waited 1 and ½ hours. Finally Dr. McAllister asked me to come in to his office and said that I needed to make another appointment. WHAT? Are you kidding!!! He then says that I have to leave a $ 1000 deposit, so if I am late I lose the deposit. This is a joke and totally unprofessional. Take it or leave was the message. I was about floored and didn’t know how to react to this. I mean what do you do?
I am sure that all these great reviews are legit but I can imagine the not so computer savvy patient, that might not be able to express the truth or have the resources to fight such a blatant misrepresentation of a Dentist.
I had to have another Dentist fix it at my own expense. I obviously will not be back.

How do you say, «EXCELLENT!» In Dr. Mcallister’s dental chair? Well I said it often. At the front office door, «EXcellent,» in the front office, «EXCELLENTE’» in the restroom, «EXCELLENTLY CLEAN,» the staff? BEAUTIFUL AND EXCELLENT! And what about the Dr. Oh yeah? EXCELLENT!!! And handsome! I got all my questions answered. Mouth was in desperate need, he fixes it EXCELLENTLY, and right on the spot ON MY FIRST VISIT I HAD ALL THE WORK I WANTED DONE, DONE EXCELLENTLY!!! But wait! That’s not all. First Claudia, and Vivian helped me with my Insurance stuff. Their gentle responses and inquiry got me in the good Dr.‘s chair in less than an hour after I called! Then, the beautiful Belinda and Jane gave me the 411 on my teeth. They really educated me about HIPAA law, Periodontal Care, and even had a professional video to boot!
As an educator, this was a critical piece and added comfort. Did Mention The office? Excellent ambiance, and environment. Sterile clean, but inviting!

I hate the dentist! BUT this place is amazing! They are so gentle and to calm your nerves, they’ll ask if you want to listen to pandora, watch Netflix and even ask if you need a blanket! They’re amazing!

This has been my dentist since i can remember. I get my teeth cleaned by the hygienist every 6 months. This dentist is very clean, high tech, and modern. This dentist has done all my dentistry for my self and my family. We are all very pleased with their dental care. I can highly recommend this dentist.

So ive been back to get my cleaning done, and see a specialist… I do have to say, im very impressed with the entire team there. Everyone is so professional. Lisa, the girl who cleaned my teeth, very professional, yet down to earth. Wasnt trying to oversell me anything. Suggested some items, but that was it.
At this point, i would recommend this place.

Let me start by saying I am a dental chicken. Had a bad experience when I was younger during a root canal (you don’t wanna know the whole story but let’s just say it was bad).
So let me get to Dr. McAllister and team…
I had broken a filling and knew I needed to see a dentist. In Downey there are about 800 dentists (exaggerating little). So I turned to my friends at Unilocal. After reading some reviews I thought I would give this dentist a shot. (Isn’t that what this place is about??) So I made an appointment and prepared myself for some poking and prodding.
I had driven by the unassuming office for years and never thought about going in (what a mistake). When I arrived I walked into an immaculately clean office, nice décor, was greeted, quickly filled out paperwork, and was in the chair ready to go. It was a great experience so far but no one had stuck anything in my mouth yet…
Once in the chair I had a quick xray which showed up on the screen above me. Then a picture was taken of my tooth. I could see the missing filling… wow technology! The assistant was amazing and I was feeling more and more comfortable. This can’t be right… I AM AT THE DENTIST!
The doctor came in, awesome guy — made me feel even more comfortable. How can this be… this guy is about to stick medieval devices inside my mouth, right?
So the shot was next… I started to feel tense but as the assistant rubbed my shoulders I relaxed and before I knew it my face was getting numb. Again wait… I didn’t feel the pinch from the needle. Somethings not right. maybe he forgot. nope face was going numb and before I knew it the work had begun. All the time during I was asked how I was doing and the doctor was taking a picture here and there. AND THEN BAM I WAS DONE!
The doctor showed me before and after, it looked great. You usually have no idea what was done but this shows his work. They made sure I was ok and said if their were any problems stop on back in and we can adjust the filling.
OK LOOK. I am not saying I am done being a chicken but if every dental experience was like this I would have been in every year like a good boy.
I will be going back to Dr. McAllister, I have already recommended him to friends and co-​workers, and I am telling the millions on Unilocal.
Check out the dental office. They will not steer you wrong and who knows I might see you in the waiting room!

Got the job done! Friendly, efficient and no fuss.
The office is clean, white walled and seemingly new, or at least well kept. The equipment was modern, with a digital X-​ray and they let you see everything they see.
Just needed a filling taken care of. An old one came out in one of my front teeth and I wanted to get it done asap before it got worse, chipped off more or even started to feel any pain.
Choosing a dentist in Downey is like looking for Mexican food in Tijuana (or just Downey for that matter…) I swear theres about a dozen dental offices in 3 square blocks… I know because I called a bunch of them trying to get a next day appointment, which unfortunately I couldnt get for a Friday. So my next criteria was whichever was closest, and Dr. McAllister’s office is literally 20 paces from my front door. And I got an 8am appointment so I literally rolled out of bed, washed up and walked over.
I really appreciate that I didnt get any upselling or extra procedures or lack of insurance BS. I paid out of pocket for this filling and it came out to a reasonable $ 220 including a $ 25 charge for the Xray and screening (according to my research for a 3 surface composite filling). They gave me the quote before they even started the real work, allowing me time to think about it. Once it was done, I was offered the chance several times to make sure I was comfortable with the filling and even offered a comeback if I didnt like it after a few days.
All said and done I was in and out of the door in exactly 60 minutes.
