Depew Roller Skating Center

My bro had a birthday party here for his daughter and this place literally stinks. I mean I am walking around thinking man this place smells and couldn’t quite put my finger on it, but then I was like oh it smells like wet dog. Come to find out the owner keeps a smelly old dog on premises whom I guess actually has fleas too. Pretty gross.
The rest of the place could really use an update too. If you feel the need to be transferred back in time to roller skating parties for nostalgia, this place might work. Has some broken video games and a snack bar as well. Ultimately it just made me a bit sad going here. Would be nice if they cleaned it all up as it could be good place for family fun still.

My kids are all excited one again that it’s that time of year when they can go roller skating at Depew Skating Center.
Although I love the idea of roller skating/​blading, the place still looks like it did in the 80’s and sadly its a bit smelly.
The skates are old and smelly, too, as well as the carpet throughout. Just a little TLC and it could be perfect. Maybe they could spray the skates like the bowling alleys do.
Very nice people. Never a problem there, but I cringe because my kids have outgrown their skates. So it’s either rent the stinky skates, take the plunge and buy new ones or they don’t go (which will undoubtedly cause drama). What a dilemma.

If you’re like me and grew up in the 80’s, you remember the roller rink (for me, it was Wal-​Lex, but that’s long gone).
Roller skating parties with hot dogs and hoodsie cups. Couples-​only skating. Doing the chicken dance and the hokey pokey. *Sigh*…I even miss falling on my keister enough to warrant sitting on a pillow for days after a trip to the rink.
I don’t know what it is about knowing that thirty is around the corner, but suddenly it’s all too easy to wax nostalgic about the decade that spawned Garbage Pail Kids, jelly shoes, and Y Kant Tori Read (and you can bet your ass I still wear my legwarmers).
It was with this in mind that I feathered my hair and ventured into Depew Roller Skating Center. It’s a little shabby and obvious that the place has outlived its glory days, but hey — they rent skates and they have a nice, flat rink.
Once I twirled out into the rink, I noticed that my cohort and I were pretty much the oldest farts on the floor. Around us swirled a throng of giggling adolescents. When I finally located people who were close to my age, I realized with chagrin that they were all parents, smiling indulgently at the chillins around me from the sidelines. Oh well.
It was awesome. The rink wasn’t too crowded, and I could almost imagine a faint Go Go’s song in the air. We got to be kids again and no one really bothered us.
There’s not a lot to rate, I guess. There was ample room to stretch our legs, and well, activity pretty much consisted of going around in circles for a few hours.
It was nice to feel a small bit of childhood again. One difference between rink skating at nine and twenty-​nine would definitely be the soreness and incapacitation afterward, though. I won’t venture back in here again unless I have a tube Ben Gay and a bag of Cool Ranch Doritos (the Doritos aren’t for helping soreness — they just taste really good).
