History

Established in 1979.

Serving the Denver Metro Area, Voltek offers a wide range of Volvo services, repair and used Volvo sales. Tom, the original owner, founded the business and opened its current location in 1984. In 2011, Tom retired and passed the Voltek legacy on to Joe and Chris.

Business Owner

When the original owner of Voltek, Tom, retired in 2011, he passed the Voltek legacy along to Joe and Chris — the current owners. Both Colorado-​natives and long-​time Volvo owners and mechanics, Joe and Chris have been repairing and servicing Volvos since 1993. Both are certified ASE master technicians and Volvo master technicians. In their spare time, Joe and Chris enjoy leading Boy Scouts and hitting the lake with family and friends. Karl, one of Tom’s original employees, is still employed at Voltek today and specializes in the older model Volvo cars.

These guys are AMAZING! I am in the shop/​service industry myself and although I strive to provide top notch and memorable customer service experiences it is very rare to recieve the same in todays standards. Their communication and repair time commitments are spot on. Their diagnostics and repair practices are impeccable. They are honest and do not try to «upsell» you on things that you dont need as dealerships do. Their prices are very reasonable and I would recommend these guys to anyone that has a volvo! I meant to write this review a long time ago. When my 2007 volvo s40 suddenly stopped functioning after a botched oil job, these guys took a look and gave me their opinion on what happened. After that, they kept my car there no charge for over a month while I figured out logistics of next steps and trying to work with the place that had done the oil job.
They were super nice and understanding. In the end, I wasn’t even able to get the service done there, but they never once complained or charged me for keeping the car there!
I definitely hope to get work done there in the future, just wish they weren’t so far from where i lived!

Great reviews and good service for my xc90 v8. I had fuel pump issue, they replacement quikly 2.5 hr. Labor is definately Less than other shop. Part is OEM. What I need more? One more thing they have loner car, well maintained grandpa volvo. Wow better than nothing!

I just took my 2000 Volvo S70 with a problem that another specialty Volvo repair shop could not figure out how to solve. Joe Halbert and Chris Hernon, the owners of Voltek, solved the problem quickly and inexpensively. Wow!
I have owned this car since I bought it new 16 years ago, and have never had better service. These guys are the real deal!!! I’m glad I found them. It was in desperation that I found them, but it was a lucky break for me.
It’s rare to find such reasonable, friendly and knowledgeable people.

These guys are awesome. The shop’s a little bit out of the way for me, but totally worth it. They explained the prices to me and were able to quickly diagnose a new issue the day I brought the car in. They even saved my state park pass when replacing my windshield. Awesome. When I came to pick the car up, I ended up shooting the breeze with Joe for a bit about older wagons and parts availability. Just an overall pleasant experience, especially if you really like Volvos.

My sister was in the process of purchasing a 2007 Volvo SUV. Called Voltek to get a pre inspection before buying the vehicle. We bought the vehicle in, inspection was done, found several things amiss with the vehicle and my sister ended up not purchasing it. Joe is a customer service superstar. He should be teaching this stuff.
The reason he can get away with it is that he knows his products and service for your model year down to the last detail. And he’ s on your job from door to door. He knows the networking on these cars like he wrote it. Multiple causes? No problem.
Labor time was worth every penny; he serviced the pcv too! And confidence in my ’99 S70 was restored.
Nice to have a shop like this outside of Scandinavia.

I went here, last week and they went above and beyond what I expected! They got me right in right away, diagnosed the problem, fix it, did an oil change and fixed a couple other random simple problems, all within an hour and way under what I thought it would cost.
I had to go back yesterday, because of a crazy sound behind my wheel. They found a big clump of mud and rocks behind the wheel. They pulled it out and cleaned it up, at no charge and sent me on my way. Amazing!!!
I’ll be going back and recommending them to anyone that has a Volvo!

Finally had Voltek complete service on my car and for once I didn’t leave a Volvo repair in tears!
Chris and all the people at Voltek are just… nice, decent people. I feel really lucky to have found a great mechanic who is honest. I was also pleasantly surprised that they offered a free loaner car for the day — Rickenbaugh has never offered me a FREE loaner, btw.
I needed a bit more work done above the scheduled maintenance — Chris called me less than an hour after I left my car to go through the additional repairs — he told me what could wait and what I should consider fixing that day. It’s just a new thing for me to leave an auto repair/​servicing and feel relief. I’m very much a happy customer.

No bad anything here.
Buying a used car is a very tricky task and Caveat Emptor is sometimes putting it lightly. It is also similar to some kind of a unusual game – a race to
find a good one that won’t cause you huge problems being the (formerly) seemingly unattainable goal.
The number one thing is to find out as much as possible about how/​where the car was maintained/​serviced. In some cases if at all-​yikes, it happens-​the best clue to how it will perform in the future, or not.
Finding a beautiful used Volvo with a nice folder of maintenance receipts from Voltek would be the ultimate. However more often in the search there are no records available at all and you are in the dark.
You no doubt know at this point a pre-​buy inspection is not an option it is a must.
I am happy to say I have finally found mechanics that don’t seem to want to lie, cheat and steal from their customers. Amazing.
The team here will diagnose and discuss their findings so you are better informed about what you may be buying, or why you are running away from it. No car (new or used) will be perfect but it is guys like this who help take the complete mystery around used car buying down to a manageable «yes, I can do this!».

As long as they are in business with the same ethical business model, I will keep driving a gently used Volvo.

The guys at Voltek are simply amazing. I have been taking two different Volvos there for 7 years now, and possibly a third. They are quick, honest, and affordable – which is hard to find in the Volvo world. I had an «incident» in my current Volvo, let’s just say it involved a summer monsoon down poor, a flooded intersection, and a stalled engine. We pushed the car across the street from the flooded intersection to a mechanic, and asked about it (knowing we would still tow it to Voltek), he flat out said «That’s the third Volvo pulled from that water, and the first two are totaled.» After a weeks’ worth of work, and multiple phone calls to me with updates, Voltek had my car running like new, and it was nowhere near totaled.
Even now, three years later, they understand my extenuating circumstance, and to save us some money we pushed back my 150k mile tune up; most of the work was done when they fixed the engine after the puddle «incident» anyway.
They also always re-​assure me that my car is in great shape, and it’s just getting broken in. It’s a good feeling when your mechanic loves your car as much as you do. Plus, you can’t beat driving down the highway in one of their loaners, with a giant «Voltek» sticker across the side of the car.

To be honest I haven’t been there (yet). But when I was having troubles with another shop (Firestone) with putting the wrong struts in my 2003 XC70 I gave them a call. They had patience with me and my questions. Because of them Firestone warrantied the Monroe struts they had put in and put Volvo struts in.

Voltek is amazing!
I just moved to Denver, knowing that my car needed some basic maintenance I found Voltek, and I’m sure glad I did! I took my 850R in, thinking I needed a new timing belt. And that maybe something else was majorly wrong with my car, being that it was difficult to gain RPM’s. Chris took a look at my car and told me it needed a new water pump and spark plugs. He drove the car to see for himself, and then gave me a list of what he felt needed to be done and what could wait. I got everything done for a cheap price and it didn’t even take a day. Chris is honest and knows what he is talking about. Great service and quality. Also, you get to roll around in a classic Volvo if you need transportation while your car is being fixed. My car runs like new now, thanks to Voltek!

Voltek is excellent. I bought a 2001 Volvo XC last fall from a friend. Great car, 120k miles and fairly well maintained. It did have some issues, though, and I came up with a list of things I wanted to take care of. Suspension, tune up, overall health check, etc.
Basically I want to get 300k miles from this car!
Chris at Voltek went through my list with me, then drove and went over the car and we prioritized everything, Chris catching some things I had missed and suggesting that some things could wait or need not be done at all.
Yes, you heard right.
He told me some of the things I was concerned about, big expensive things, could wait or even never need be addressed. He left money on the table. How huge is that?
I’d had some other people look at the car. My Dad taught me to always get multiple quotes for anything expensive (and what’s more expensive than Volvo work? Neurosurgery? Platinum?) A Boulder shop specializing in Volvos wanted to replace the brake booster to the tune of $ 600 based on a noise. Chris realized that the booster was fine and an interior blower motor just needed a little silicone grease to eliminate the noise. Boom, $ 600 dollars saved. Boulder shop wanted 980 to replace radiator with very slow leak, Chris told me I could wait on that indefinitely, Boom! $ 980 saved! Same with left CV joint, will need to replace at some point in future but ok for right now. Boom! $ 700 saved (for now…)
I could go on and on about these guys (I dealt with Joe at the counter – very helpful and professional and the guy who arranged the loaner car, and Chris, the mechanic) and their expertise. But in short, if you drive a Volvo, you should consider Voltek for repairs and service. Sorry if I seem overly psyched – it’s because driving home felt like I just got a brand new car.
And now I know that I have a mechanic i can trust. How huge is that?

The short story: Voltek saved me almost $ 1000 on my last repair, admitted and fixed a mistake made during the repair, and they’re always friendly.
I’ll never go anywhere else.
The slightly longer story: I had been taking my 2006 V50 wagon to voltek for regular maintenance for about a year. I was always happy with the service, and I appreciated the friendly atmosphere that Joe and Chris have at the shop.
When my alternator went out, it took the main computer with it, and it was going to be a very expensive repair. Chris went above and beyond to get a rebuilt replacement for the computer, saving me nearly one thousand dollars.
They fixed my car quickly and for a price that was more than reasonable.
A day later, I was getting error messages when I drove. I thought that the rebuilt computer was a bust, and that I’d end up paying double to have it replaced. Instead, Chris took the car and called me back, telling me that *he had made a mistake*, that he had tried a certain method of installation, and that he had to make a change that took about 10 minutes. Again I got my car back quick fast in a hurry and was on the road.
Here’s what impressed me: Have you ever had a mechanic admit a mistake?
Me neither. But everyone makes mistakes. Even mechanics. We all know that to be true, but still and yet, I believe that it’s a sign of a true professional when they’re secure enough in their knowledge of their craft to be honest about it in all instances.
I think Chris took a big risk telling me he made a mistake. I might never have come back. But instead of thinking «Wow, I don’t want anyone who makes mistakes to work on my car,» I immediately thought, «That’s some pretty bold honesty. I now trust this guy more than any mechanic I’ve ever met.»
Joe’s great, too. Family guy. Nice to talk to. I once told him my mom was having some surgery, and a few months later when I was there for an oil change, he asked how she was doing.
That doesn’t matter to some people, but to me, that’s pretty huge.
As long as I own a Volvo, I’ll be taking it to Voltek when I need work done. They’re as good as it gets.
