History
Established in 2011.
Founder Zak Hennessey grew up in Denver, Co., but couldn’t find a school that taught art for comic books, movies, video games, or FX makeup. He, like many other talented Colorado high school graduates, had to leave the state to get the education and work opportunities he wanted. After living in Los Angeles and New York for almost a decade, he returned to Denver and decided to open the Academy so Colorado’s talent could stay in Colorado. Having attended both RMCAD the Art Academy of Los Angeles, he found that the lower prices, professional teachers, and portfolio-based focus of the school of AALA was the better way to go, and led him to his professional career. He modeled the Denver Entertainment Art & Design Academy after this, as entertainment industry employers care more that you can do the art they want to see, over having a piece of paper that says you overpaid way too much for an education that had no classes in your chosen field. Our teachers work in their industries.

Business Owner
Founder and Lead Instructor Zak Hennessey is one of thousands of talented Colorado artists who had to leave the state to find education and opportunities relevant to his chosen field. His only local choices were to go to an expensive art school, pile on a bunch of debt, and leave with a portfolio not relevant to his industry. Or go to L.A., where they teach you how to succeed in the entertainment industry. He chose the latter, and attended the Art Academy of Los Angeles, which led to work for Sony, Disney, Warner Brothers, Paramount, Showtime, FOX Sports, and many other clients. He later returned to AALA as an instructor and enjoyed the experience. He returned to Denver and was happy to see it’s growth since his departure, but still there was no school for the entertainment industry. Thus, with the help of the Rocky Mountain MicroFinance Institute, he created the Denver Entertainment Art & Design (D.E.A.D.) Academy.
