Viet Bites

I visited VB for lunch today… probably my 5^th or 6^th visit. Each time I leave disappointed, but today was especially bad. The establishment was clean and the staff was nice. The food, however, leaves much to be desired. The phở noodles were still a little hard and should have been cooked a few more minutes to get the correct consistency. The chicken for the phở noodle bowl was very dry and had no flavor whatsoever. There were no vegetables except bean sprouts added to the soup. I want to like Viet Bites, but they keep disappointing me. If you know, love, and understand what true Vietnamese food should taste like, I would not recommend this establishment. However, there are a lot of Denton-​ites who appreciate their veggie/​vegan options. Overall, I would not recommend a visit if you are a foodie or die hard Viet food fan.

Most of negative phở reviews are from people who enjoy the normal msg laden phos at Viet restaurant. I’m Vietnamese and lived in Nha trang and phở is authentic here. Definitely my favorite restaurant in Denton and around. Friendly owners and the food is so fresh and healthy you can taste it. That pork banh mi w their special homemade mayo is a winner. Could eat it daily. Their phở is authentic and delicious. Not too overpowering broth like most Vietnamese. Really good food.

My company has me working in Denton for today, so I thought I would check this place out. I wasn’t expecting much from all the bad reviews but Seoul Chicken wasn’t open yet and I needed a quick bite before I got back to work.
That being said… 11 for a bowl of phở and you get no vegetables?. Or maybe I should have let them know, but usually every viet restaurant you go to always has condiments of mint leaves and lemon or lime to add that additional flavor to your phở. The broth was very bland. Tasted like it came from Insta-​phở in a bag. I do have to say that the small pieces of meat that I did get it, were fresh and tasty but they were only a couple pieces.
other customer reviews are on par with the comment that you pay a lot for your bow that is bland, with little condiments to no condiments.
I don’t recommend this place even if you want to chance and try it like I did just to give the place a chance.
Super bland is all I can sum up with. I can’t believe you can jack it up, but this place did it.

Good service, and can expertly pack up to-​go orders. Banh Mi was good, phở was not. The Bahn Mi had a generous portion of pork, with pickled veggies, cucumber, jalepeños, and cilantro, so a solid sandwich that is easily a meal on it’s own. Wanting to try the phở as well I got the banh mi/​/​phở combo. The broth had little flavor in it, and the beef added in did not add much to it. Yes there were lots of noodles, bean sprouts, cilantro and jalapenos, with a lime as adornment, but the broth it what makes or breaks the dish, and in my case it broke it. Since it’s cheap and conveniently located to UNT I recommend eating here, just not the get the phở.

Love the rice bowl with chicken, added eggs, avocado and all the veggies along with citrus ginger sauce. I’m in heaven!

I drive into Denton from Wichita Falls at least once a month just to get away. I have driven by Viet Bites quite a few times and definitely wanted to come in and give it a try; however, my wife is not a creature of variety so I would have to find the perfect opportunity. What better opportunity than having to go down for work on a weekday?!
So I was excited but I held it in as I entered the clean establishment. The restaurant is located near UNT and they take advantage of it. The place is full of bright colors and has that early college vibe. That and there were a couple college students doing homework on laptops at some tables. But it was a peaceful experience as 80’s music played, such as «Jessie’s Girl». So I walked up to the cash register and wasn’t exactly sure how to order but I wasn’t picky either. I asked the cashier what he suggested and he walked me through the easy step by step menu. It’s much like a Chipotle or QDoba menu. Pick your item, then protein, then sauce, etc. I had the noodle plate with pork and it did not disappoint.
I quietly enjoyed my plate and headed home afterward. It was a really good experience, the customer service was great, the food was good, and the establishment was clean. I was an above average place but it did not stand out to earn the 5^th star. If I lived closer I would definitely come back.

This is my first time in here and it was disappointing. I order a beef phở noodle soup. The staff asked if I wanted the combination (beef rare, beef brisket and meatball). I said yes because it was how phở supposed to be in Vietnam. I’m a Vietnamese anyway.
I was discourage to try it for several times because I saw some photos with a phở soup and some avocado in it. I assure you it never happen in Vietnam or any other Viet places.
The phở came out after about 10 mins, with 6 pieces of meat. WHAT??? YES!!! I counted. For almost $ 10, you get a bowl of noodle and 6 pieces of meat. (They charged extra 50 cents for the combination and still give me 6 pieces of meat).
The soup is very bland. Tasteless!!! TASTELESS. It is like hot water. I had to put extra hoisin sauce to have a taste.
The only good thing is the veggie bar with basil and bean sprouts. It was a self-​serve so you can take whatever you want. Rather than that, it made me hate phở once I ate it.

Wow… I thought I’d try these guys at this location since it’s Sunday and their original Elm street diner is closed on Sundays. I never like their Phở at the Elm street location (it is awful! I tried it 3 times and finally gave up) so I always only order what I feel they are competent in making — lemongrass grilled pork. You see, I am vietnamese and I am always in search of good viet joints to eat. And Viet Bites’ only item worth eating is their lemongrass pork. It is great. HOWEVER, when I came to this location in Hickory St, fully expecting a different concept in delivering food, I did not expect the food to be different as well.
Apparently they have the Shawarma style rotisserie meat tornadoes doing the «grilling» instead of the traditional way of doing it with the seasoning. I did not see this until after ordering and waiting 17 mins for what I thought was a safe purchase with my 2 sandwiches.
What I got as grilled pork was charred pork from this rotisserie (i was first in the door at 11:30am!) and tasted like burnt fat that is hard from the charring and had no taste. Pathetic. This is NOT vietnamese Banh Mi !!!
I get it– they are tailoring to UNT student who may not know much better about viet food, and in some cases just looking for grub, but to pass this crap off as viet grilled lemongrass pork banh mi is a exaggeration and darnright misleading or lying. No authentic vietnamese restaurants would serve this stuff.
I will try their original Elm Street location one more time to see if the operations have changed. If they have, I am done with this place. Try Asian Star in Corinth for decent viet food. They have better Phở as well.

Nasty and unbelievably overpriced. Drive down to Carrolton if you want halfway decent Viet food.

Great food and generous portions! I got the rice bowl — it was delicious! The cost was a little pricey though for the type of restaurant.

The food here is all pretty tasty. I’ve definitely had better phở, but the Banh Mi with tofu is delicious. The reason for the lower review is the service! While the people are nice, it takes way too long to get a meal. Even ordering a single egg roll take 10 – 15 minutes, minimum. There’s better, more reliable Thai places within walking distance of Viet Bites, check those out instead.

Average taste, if you need your phở fix, since there isn’t anywhere else in town for Vietnamese, then it’s acceptable. I wasn’t too impressed with the food, but I did like the open bar vegetable garnishes though.
I go elsewhere for my phở fix, but in a pinch, this’ll do

I didn’t expect much when I decided to choose this location for lunch, and as I assumed, it was horrible.
This establishment is way different than the other Vietnamese restaurants I’ve been to. They adopted the self service that I have not seen at other Vietnamese restaurants. Order at the counter, pick up your food at the counter, get your own veggies at the vegetable station, put up your own plate and bowl when you’re done.
I thought the vegetable station was pretty clever since it’s more efficient that way. Customer can get the amount that they want, which saves the restaurant expenses.
I ordered a regular Phở bowl with rare beef. It was a downer. The broth was extremely sweet and greasy, too much noodle, too little meat, not to mention their vegetable station doesn’t even have basil, a must have for Phở.
The restaurant itself was filthy. The sauce and chopstick holder were dirty. Look like it haven’t been wiped in months. I also thought that $ 10 was overpriced for the quality that you receive, but i guess they have the advantage of being the only Vietnamese restaurant that’s close to the University.

My friends and I came here on a Saturday night when other restaurants around were closed already. We ordered Phở, and what came out was unexpectable. There was barely any meat or noodles in a big bowl with full of broth. I felt like it didn’t even fill half of my stomach, and my appetite is consider pretty small as well. I don’t think this is an authentic Vietnamese restaurant because I’m Vietnamese, so I can tell right away that this one isn’t. The only thing I like about this place is it’s really clean. That’s about it. I don’t think I would want to come back here at all!

This place was disgusting. It has all greasy, the banh mi I had was pure fat and gristle. Never again.

As someone who frequently visited their original, Elm St. location, I must say: I really wanted to enjoy their new addition but sadly, I cannot lie. The menu is mostly the same but the quality in food seems to have taken a downturn.
For starters, I ate with about 5 people and every single one of us had something wrong with our order when it came out. Either something was missing or the wrong choice was given — no complaints were made simply because we don’t roll like that (chill folks here) but still. Not sure how you manage to get every order wrong.
Also, my most beloved «tofu fries» simply weren’t the same at this location :(At the original spot, they are mouth-​watering and out of this world. When they finally came out (I had to remind them twice) they just weren’t the same flavor. Dull, undercooked, what a let-​down.
The location here is obviously convenient if you’re a UNT student but otherwise, I have to suggest the original location. Other than that, I do dig the reasonable prices, profound assortment of options (if they actually bring you what you order) and friendly service.

Hard to rate since I didn’t eat here. The Unilocal says «delivery» so I used the listed number. Phone went to VM and said nothing about Viet Bites, sounded like a personal line. Googled another number that answered and gave me the first number to call again. Answered with «hello» (very confusing as a business). I asked if it was Viet Bites, it was, asked if they delivered, told to hold on. Next person says «hello?», I ask same question. «I’ll get you the number» is my answer and what would be my fourth phone call and second internet search just to eat at this place. Too exhausted from this journey, and writing this review, I decided to just drink my dinner a mere blocks from Viet Bites.
I write this only to make this deficiency very clear to the management and how it could hurt their business.

I’m new to Denton and have eaten at more than a few Vietnamese Restaurants in my time. to sum up my experience at this location, trendy does not make for good tasting food.
We ordered The Traditional Roll which is supposed to be pork and shrimp, but they were out of shrimp so we got to «pick our own protein» the rolls were fairly bland, with shredded iceberg lettuce, instead of leaf lettuce, no basil and the peanut sauce tasted like thin unsalted peanut-​butter with no hint of anything else in it.
Moving on to the Phở /​Noodle Soup we ordered: Phở Bo Beef Noodle Soup
w/​Rare Steak, and Beef Meatball major complaints:
1.One being asked what kind of protein I want when I order the dish by name was sort of odd and showed me the staff/​cashier was a bit less knowledgeable about the product that she was selling .
2. Served in cardboard bowls with noodles cemented to the bottom. Obviously made ahead judging by the amount of unmovable noodles.
You could taste the cardboard in the soup flavor.
3. Bland, and luke-​warm, the broth tasted like watered down canned broth with no hint of any of the tradition fragrant spices like cinnamon or anise.
Even with adding the typical add-on’s, hoisin sauce, green onions, white onions, basil, sriracha and lime, the lack of spices in the broth made it less than perfect.
4.The serving temperature of the soup lacked enough heat to wilt the basil and bean sprouts or cook the not quite the rare flank steak and the resulting bowl tasted more like a twist on a bean sprout basil and onion noodle salad than actual phở.
I am hoping this is limited to the Viet bites at this location and look forward to trying the other restaurant soon, thinking, away from the trendy downtown area, my dining experience will be better.

The Banh mi here is always good and fresh. Ingredients are fresh as well, but when you order, be clear on what you want on the sandwich. I basically only said chicken for mine and no jalapeños, and so they assumed to add kimchi and everything not in the green box, which I assumed you had to ask for. Got the taro boba the first time I was here and it was disgusting and watery. This time I got Thai tea and it was pretty good and decent. ALTHOUGH I think 3.75 for the size of the boba drink is freaking ridiculous.
Service was friendly, but the actual time to get food was a little slow.
Atmosphere is nice. Price for Banh mi is decent (5.50), it’s just the boba that made it expensive. Never ordering the boba again because of the price.

I love the first location and this one is just as good or better! It is very close to where I live and right by the school so it’s a perfect spot to go grab something fast to eat. At the same time, it doesn’t have to be a quick stop for food and has tons of options that can be enjoyed on less hectic days.
I love the veggie phở and pretty much anything with their tofu in it, whether it’s phở, a bành mi, noodle bowl, or salad bowl. They are still growing and adding a few things to the menu here and there. Curry fries are the bomb too.
Also, the weekend hours are a huge plus. It’s always fun to get food late.
If you’re in the area, definitely try it out. Totally worth it every time. It opened just within this past moth and I’ve probably already been a good 8 times!!!
