History

Established in 1890.

On Sept. 16, 1890, in a boomtown on the North Texas prairie, Joshua C. Chilton established the Texas Normal College and Teacher Training Institute with 70 students and these auspicious words: «It will be our aim to become leaders in the education of the young men and women of Texas, fitting them to creditably fill the most important positions in business and professional circles.» For 125 years and counting, UNT has fulfilled its mission to create leaders and visionaries. As the nation’s 25th largest public university and a catalyst for creativity, UNT fuels progress, innovation and entrepreneurship the North Texas region and the state. As the university has grown, so has its reach and impact with research and scholarship spanning the arts, science, engineering and everything in between. UNT graduated 8,200 students last year from its 12 colleges and school and offers 99 bachelor’s, 83 master’s and 36 doctoral degree programs, many nationally and internationally recognized.
