Sack & Save Food Stores

Absolutely disgusting. The cashier had a half eaten piece of pizza sitting on her register. The meat looks like it wouldn’t pass inspection.

When I lived in Denton many moons ago before L.A. this place was like the only grocery story for miles if you were using Pat and Tom (walking). It was nearby campus and you could literally walk to Grocery Store and it helped out so many peers and myself. HOWEVER, today there are other stores but this one is still closest to campus and I can assure you they do not GIVE a gosh darn. The store firstly smells like old dirty mop water and bacteria when you walk in. They could at least put some cinnamon scented pine cones or cook some bbq, cake or something that smells GREAT to mask that broke poverty spirit that they have going on. Nobody can feel good about themselves shopping in this dump. The baskets are nasty. Some of the food there looks just yucky.
My other complaint is that I dropped off three packages at their mail box on a day that it was snowing badly and I was too scared to drive to post office and I wasn’t sure if it was open or not. We had ice the days before and I thought well if I drop it off at post office at Sack n SAVE at least the mail will go out? Well guess what two of the packages went out and have tracking. I’ve had to file a complaint with the postal service in regards o the otherone plus I just might have to refund the person’s money from EBay. It’s really pathetic. Rule is do not drop off any mail there at their post office which does not process mail. They do not scan the mail you’re better off putting mail and under 13 ounces in the mail drop but I didn’t use mail drop that day because it was really snowing hard and who knows if the mail would have gotten wet by some idiot from UNT or wherever playing a game. I just decided that USPS at Sackn save drop it off there. WEll I really think one of my packages has been lost but I blame myself for trusting them to be a REAL postal service. They suck. The store is nasty and the also have really poor looking people who work there. They just look like they are poor and really mentally crazy sort of zombified. UNT should buy them for real. BE GONE SACK n SAVE nobody needs you. They need a grocery store over there to cater to college students but not this dump. Also a lot of students park over there and on the street but McD’s has been flattened so has the gas station I think UNT bought it.
Also there are a lot of poor looking Latinos, low class whites, and college students without cars who go there and they run over the people. Also they price gouge I noticed that they overcharge for a lot of MILK, Cheeses, Yogurts where as the nicer stores like KROGERS always has a sale. This story is WACK they are crooks. I believe that someone in the office stole one of my 3 packages but I’ve notified the POstal Service and they are going to contact Sack and Save. I had tracking info on all my packages. They are also rude. They told me to call post office if they don’t do a good job. I told them I will and let them know you stole my package or lost it. So word to wise do not drop off anything there for mailing because they do not give receipts. YOu can call the post office and schedule a pick up that’s better. Or put in mail box.
update: as of 7÷15÷2015 I’ve noticed that it’s been shut down the University of North Texas purchased it so it’s no longer open. It was a smelly, old timey, on life support store but it also helped many students and I’m a bit sad that it’s gone for ONLY that reason. It’s closed!

My wife and I recently started shopping at Sack N Save. The produce prices are great the red meat is fresh and they have some really good grocery prices. We were able to get Crisco oil for $ 2.18 and bags of cereal for .98 each. Also they had canned vegetables on sale for .48 and their Roma tomatoes and peppers are always cheap and good quality. The other day we bought coke in 6pack bottles for $ 1.88, we always find good deals. The building is kind of retro like but nothing different from the sack n save stores we used to live by in Fort Worth. Not much organic selection, but they do have a lot of Hispanic specialties and fresh Asian fruits and vegetables. Its not a fancy place but if you are looking for good prices on groceries and meat and produce Sack n save is a destination. If you are expecting Kroger, Whole Foods, or Central Market you will be disappointed.
We still do some shopping at wal mart but go load up at sack n save a couple of times a month. Sometimes their ads are really good, especially when they do weekend sales.

A marvel of blinded retail cluelessness. Unbelievably bad. How does this place stay open? Students making a mistake once and never again at the beginning of their first semester at UNT? I went to UNT in the late 80s and early 90s and this place was great and competetive-​priced, with a lot of deals. The stocking was competitive with other stores, and the place served starving students, Denton’s Mexican and Asian populations. Today there is H mart in Lewisville and La Azteca (and soon a Michoacana) within 3 miles. What population can find any value in this place except those that can’t get to another store further away from where they are? I hadn’t been back in years and was a SHOCKED by selection and prices. The buyers for this chain should be fired en masse if the intention of the owners is to get anything other than an annual loss write-​off. How else does it stay open? Was there on a Friday night (a payday) at 8pm and there were 3 more people I saw shopping. Definitely 20 years behind the times. I think for toiletries and groceries (minus produce which is cheap) this place might be the most expensive grocery store in town. 4 bags of groceries (I didn’t walk away from the cart because i was in a time jam) cost me $ 60. WOW. Avoid. .. Avoid.
UPDATE: HAHA — just recently read that Sack & Save is going away. UNT is going to take the building and turn it into more administrative space. GOODBYE Sack and Save!

Sack n save is a Denton icon. The concept is, you sack your own groceries and therefore save money. Truth is, its just a cheap grocery store. Do not expect service or to find any organic coffee, or anything else organic for that matter. If you still shop regular grocery store food and dont know you are being poisoned bt the processed foods, then this could be a good option for saving a few bucks.
I also found the side-​items like dish soap and oven cleaner to not be a bargain.

WHY IS THIS PLACE EVEN OPEN? It’s beyond disgusting. The tiles are coming out of the floor, their produce always has massive amounts of flies crawling over it, and it STINKS! The only good thing about this dump is that it’s basically on campus. But it still sucks. And HORRIBLE cashiers. The bagger didn’t even hand me my bag! Tear this shit hole down and build a Central Market please.

This store caters to an increasing Mexican working class population in Denton. It has that 60’s and 70’s look — old, old-​fashioned and shabby. Their produce prices are about the only ones that are competitive with other supermarkets in town, but the produce quality is often inferior to Walmart’s, Kroger’s, etc.
However, my main bone of contention is their consistent data entry errors at the checkout — deliberate or a result of incompetence and carelessness. Whenever I shop there for the specials, at least one of the items will ring up at the regular price instead of that advertised in the weekly flyer. They are very cagey about it. Everybody at the store claims the data entry is performed at another facility, but a branch manager wrote to me that this is done right here in Denton.
If you want a stress-​free shopping experience and don’t mind spending a little more on produce, don’t shop at Sack and Save. Otherwise, you’ll be spending extra 5 – 15 minutes trying to get a refund for overcharges.

Low prices, great produce, pretty good dry goods section. However, I would stay away from the packaged meats. I’ve had a few less than pleasant experiences with beef, pork, and chicken. Be careful! I would recommend the tamales they have near checkout. You can get 12 for around $ 10 and they are tasty.

I haven’t been here in a little while but this used to be my place to go for produce, before gas prices started shooting to 4/​barrel. I used to buy a lot of peppers here, they had a decent selection: habanero, jalapenos, bell peppers, serrano, etc. The checkout lines seem to move pretty fast.

Way cleaner than it used to be, it’s my stop for long-​burning tall glass candles that provide supplemental heat in my tile bathroom for 6 days or so without catching anything on fire. (place on floor near wall out of the way. They extinguish themselves when finito)
Also Mexican Cokes, queso fresco, a variety of things in a semi-​exotic way. Fun for this old kid from OZ when I can’t get to S. TX., I love to browse and learn.

It’s in walking distance from UNT, so it’s a one-​stop shop for students in need of cheap snacks, toiletries and laundry detergent. It’s indeed trashy, but it gets the job done. And they carry a big selection of beer and wine. Need I say more?

Sack & Save is the only grocery store within walking distance from the campus but, now that I have a car and don’t live in the dorms, I only go there if I want to buy cheap Mexican beer. This place is super-​cheap (magazines are always discounted) and it really caters to the Mexican community in Denton, selling imported spices, tomatillos, queso fresco, Jumex juice, etc.
Despite this store’s «exotic» commodities, I’d rather buy the bulk of my groceries at Kroger because they have a larger variety — plus I don’t have to sack a thing.
