History
Established in 1962.
The Black Lantern began as a «Chicago-style» speak-easy in the early 1960’s, complete with Tiffany lamps and a player piano. Bill and Jane Welker (Mom and Dad) ran a successful family-style restaurant, the Tip Top, on the street level of this building. They saw an opportunity to combine their love of antiques and Chicago to bring a new fine-dining experience to downtown Defiance here in the lower level of this building. Over the years the business grew and expanded to include dining rooms and a banquet room beneath the Sherwin-Williams store.
In the 1980’s Tip Top was closed and the space was redesigned to become Charlie’s Bakery and Deli. The Black Lantern was reopened as Charlie’s Down Under. The Welker family sold the business in the early 90’s to Pete Lundberg, friend and long-time employee. Pete continued to run Charlie’s Down Under until 2010, when Chuck Welker (yes, he’s «Charlie») returned to Defiance and bought the business back, converting the street level space to Bread
