History
Established in 2014.
The three-fold significance of «Restauration»
Restauration is the archaic French variant of the word «restoration» which originated in 1765 in a Paris shop from which to buy broths intended to restore one’s strength. Ultimately offerings were expanded and the restaurant industry emerged.
With a nod to Decorah’s Norwegian roots, we share our name with the historic sloop «Restauration» which carried the first Norwegian immigrants to America in 1825.
A replica of the sloop Restauration resides at the Vesterheim Museum, a few blocks away.
Finally, the restaurant’s name is tribute to the gift Helen Basler made to the community when she spearheaded and funded a massive restoration project of the Hotel, completed in 2000. Mrs. Basler has provided this beautifully restored hotel in which to do business; by using the title «Restauration,» we are honoring the history of this building.
