Jake’s Desserts

First of all, they’re called Davis Desserts now, but they still have the same offerings as Jake’s Desserts: cookies, cupcakes, & ice cream.
My friend and I came for Happy Hour milkshakes on Friday between 4 – 7 pm. Basically, they have a special deal every day, including cheaper scoops of ice cream, cupcakes, cowpies, and quarts of ice cream. The «special» is basically 75 cents to $ 1 off the original price, which in the case of the milkshake was not enough of an incentive for me to come back for more. Instead of being $ 5, the special made it $ 4, and the milkshake wasn’t worth the price.
A milkshake is any 3 scoops of ice cream blended together. There are some suggested flavors or you can make your own. I sampled the Cream Puff Filling flavor — it tasted like a super sweet version of vanilla custard — and the Cupcake flavor– excellent cake batter flavor with birthday sprinkles mixed in. I decided on the pre-​designed Snickers flavor though, which was chocolate, peanut butter, and caramel ice creams with a scoop of peanuts. My friend got Chandru, which was Nutella, coffee, and chocolate (unsure of the last flavor). Hers ended up being a blend of undistinguishable flavors. Mine was too milky, seemed to be melting quickly, and I didn’t notice any crunchiness or texture differences from the peanuts; maybe their blender is just that good. The shake didn’t have enough of a «wow» factor for me to say that I’ll be back. I’d much rather have a shake from In N Out.
With that being said, their individual ice cream flavors are unique and fun, and I’d come here over Baskin Robbins any day.

Got the avocado coconut ice cream and Nutella ice cream along with the monkey mania cupcake for $ 5.50. Everything was great a little of a wait though during the time I went.

I finally decided to try their cupcakes. The first time I came here the lady at the counter told me a dozen cupcakes was 27.50…then the second time she said $ 30.same lady different prices. I am not sure why the inconsistency, but as a customer that enjoys these cupcakes, I was a bit disappointed.
As for the cupcakes, their carrot, smore, and macaroon cupcakes are so good! The smore cupcake is especially delicious, its as if you are biting into a hostess cupcake, but better! The filling hugs your taste buds so nicely it make you want to eat another!
Also, I ordered a dozen carrot cupcakes and she wanted to give me day old cupcakes. This was new to me since usually other cupcake shops only have fresh cupcakes or the day old are sold at a cheaper price. She only had 10 of the freshly baked, so forcely I had to get day old cupcakes at the same price… what the heck (only after I asked how many fresh ones she had did she mention all of this) ! There were plenty of other day old cupcakes… womp womp.
I have never tried their ice cream.

$ 1 per scoop on Mondays, there is no better deal in Davis! Fast service and clean place to chill out. Would come every Monday.

Went to Jake’s desserts for the first time and was pretty disappointed. Ordered a «Mini-​pumpkin pie» because I was too cold for ice cream. They are actually little scoops of HARD pumpkin ice cream in a crust! Fooled me!
There desserts are also pretty damn overpriced!

When I first went to this place in 2011, (back when it was called Sugar daddies), I’d have given it 5 stars for icecream quality. However, couple years down the road, I can really only manage 4 stars because of the increased prices and the pretty bad cupcakes.
Pros: it’s all about the ice cream here. They have amazing gourmet flavors that I always love to try. Some of my favorites are avacado coconut (probably their most popular flavor), salted caramel and Nutella together, and mexican chocolate. They are always coming up with new flavors too and they are usually nice about letting you try before you choose. I feel bad asking for more than 2, so I couldn’t tell ya the maximum number you can try. $ 1 scoop night on Mondays is awesome — big scoops you can get in regular cone, sugar cone, or in a bowl. They have some kind of special everyday (check out photos), but my favorites are the dollar scoops on Monday and cowpies on Thursday! Cowpies are basically dessert for two people for $ 3 or $ 3.50. Two cookies and two scoops of icecream. What more could you ask for?
Cons: Don’t bother with the cupcakes here. We tried the chocolate cheescake cupcake and it was pretty meh. Definitely not fresh and not very chocolatey or cheesecakey.
Overall, I will always be a fan of this place for icecream and I hope they continue to make fun gourmet flavors!

I’ve had Jake’s desserts a couple of times now and every time I walk away more impressed. They have some of the best cupcakes between SF and Reno. They are moist, have great flavors and decadent frosting. The frosting makes or breaks the cupcakes in my opinion, and these don’t fail. My favorites are the coconut macaroon cupcake and the white cake with chocolate ganache on top.
My husband also tried a few different ice cream flavors. He was having trouble deciding because he liked so many. He landed on the avocado coconut. You don’t taste the avocado at all, it’s just adds to the thickness and consistency. It was so good!

Ya know, I would have a more bulky review for this place if I had tried more of their ice cream options, but I’m all about their Guava-​Passionfruit flavor
It’s been a ritual for me over the past couple months for their ice-​cream. My favorite flavors so far have been Guava-​Passionfruit, Strawberry, and Oreo Coffee. Mint Choc Chip is more Vanilla than Mint/​Choc Chip, but it does the job. Other flavors include Horchata, Banana, Cupcake, and Creampuff Filling — interesting flavors that you wouldn’t see elsewhere!

Overall, I would give ⁵⁄₅ for ice-​cream but probably only ³⁄₅ for their cupcakes. I had their champagne flavored cupcake and I wasn’t very amazed by it. In particular, I found the cake part dry.

Jake’s Desserts is a fun artisan dessert shoppe that sells meticulously-​iced cupcakes, a few unique ice cream flavors, and yummy cookies. In addition to the «typical» flavors, their ice cream options include Chai Tea, Mexican Chocolate, S’mores, White Chocolate Mocha, and Avocado Coconut (a local favorite, definitely worth a try).
The store has a special every weekday. My favorite is Monday’s discount: $ 1 scoops of any ice cream flavor. They claim it’s $ 1 for only a single scoop. But they always seem to try to fit at least two full, delicious scoops in the cup or on the cone.
After watching a film at the movie theater a block away, my friends and I are often looking for a sweet, late night snack. This dessert shop is a nice alternative to CREAM, which is across the street from the theater. In my opinion, you get more bang for your buck at Jake’s Desserts. So if you don’t absolutely need an ice cream cookie sandwich (CREAM’s main menu item) then head over to Jake’s and enjoy a yummy cupcake, cookie, or scoop of Avocado Coconut ice cream.

+ THE ICE CREAM
The scoops of the ice creams are pretty generous. There’s a huge variety of different flavors so I like to try different things every time I come. I loved their chai tea and I recently fell in love with the lemon sorbet. Very flavorful but not too strong!
+ THE PRICES
You can’t beat $ 1 scoop Mondays! The scoop size isn’t ginormous but it actually is pretty packed in your little cup. It can also get really crowded on Mondays because everyone wants cheap ice cream. Normally the price of a scoop is around $ 2.50, which isn’t bad either! I love how they have different deals on different days of the week too. It’s a great business strategy to attract customers to come in on multiple days of the week

It’s pretty pricey here and the ice cream flavor are okay — nothing amazing. But dollar scoops on Mondays are a must!
The lady scooping ice cream for my friend accidentally got the scoop of ice cream out of the tub and it fell onto the space between the tubs of ice cream and just used it anyways… I thought it was kind of gross though.

This place keeps changing names! I don’t know how Jake’s compares to previous iterations of this dessert place, but it looks pretty much the same. I normally avoid cupcake places, but Jake’s cupcakes are just $ 2.50 each (cheap for designer cupcakes) and come with great combo options.
I split the $ 5 combo of a rum cupcake and a «small» ice cream with a friend. «Small» in quotes because it was actually two scoops of ice cream — a larger quantity for a cheaper price and (imo) higher quality than Baskin Robbins across the street. The shopkeeper was friendly, helpful, and generous with samples.
Summary: My new go-​to dessert place in Davis :)

When I saw the sign that said «Tuesday $ 2 cupcakes» I could not just pass by. I ventured inside to check out the options.
I was overwhelmed at all the options, but I narrowed it down to three cupcakes:
The Crazy K Carrot Cake, The Vanilla Fix (vanilla cupcake with chocolate frosting) and the Coconut Macaroon cupcake.
The Carrot Cake was so moist and delicious, the Vanilla fix was a close second. I think I will have to keep going back when I return to Davis to try all the other flavors I was curious about but had to have some self control.(Champagne cupcake, Dulce de leche, Smores, etc)
FYI…They do accept credit cards, but there is a $.25 charge.

Great selection of innovative and classic flavors. A two-​flavor cup or cone is only $ 2. The friendly staff lets you sample flavors. After trying several, I settled on the brown sugar orange peel and coffee flavors. Delicious and creamy! I tried the cupcakes once and wasn’t wowed. I’ll stick with their ice cream.
Also, one of the few frozen dessert places in Davis that has a restroom for customers. Thank you!

Yay $ 1 scoop Monday’s!!! They have a large assortment of flavors. I really like the avocado coconut; it tastes more coconut than avocado which is probably why I like it. My roommates thought it was a weird flavor and they were convinced it would be disgusting but they have finally seen the light and really liked it when I made them try it.
My roommates ordered: mint chocolate chip and peanut butter snickers. All good flavors but my ice cream was our favorite… obviously :)

+ Ice Cream
The $ 1.00 scoop Mondays event is the only reason why I would go to Jake’s Desserts (previously Sugar Daddies & Davis Creamery). The ice cream is a little dull, but to begin with, I just don’t really like ice cream in general. Not my thing, really… They do have some unique flavors, which is not bad at all. That may entice you to try something, like I did. Yum, Nutella! Moreover, I do appreciate the (really) generous scoops the servers give you. It’s a lot for just a buck. So if you’re into ice cream, or craving something cold, Jake’s Desserts may be the place to go.

I honestly think their cupcakes taste like cardboard. Just my opinion so don’t judge me harshly on that. There’s a lot of extra frosting to my palate, and the cupcakes just don’t taste fresh nor real. Not a fan, sorry Jake.

We always stop by for milkshakes on Sundays on our way back from Tahoe to the Bay. Went in this past Sunday and the bitch behind the counter told me there was no «milkshake» base to make the milkshakes. WTF is milkshake base? Milk??? You’re out of milk?
Note to the owners: When we walked in, this chick was sitting at a table with a guy studying and it took her a good minute to get up and get her ass behind to counter to help us. She needs to be fired and you need to hire people who actually want to work there.
Well that was 5 milkshakes sales that didn’t happen. Not coming back ever–

I only come here for the $ 1 scoop Mondays! They have other specials every day of the week, but honestly this is the best deal especially since the servers are very generous in their scoops! One scoop is definitely enough to satisfy an ice cream craving and 2 scoops can definitely get you a little full.
I love local creameries especially those that make their own ice cream in house. Sugar Daddies has flavors such as nutella, avocado, pumpkin latte, honey vanilla, coffee oreo, birthday cake, and Mexican chocolate. However, I will say that I think their ice cream is really really rich. I’m partially lactose intolerant and I’ll just say I should’ve just gotten 1 scoop over the 2 haha. But if you really like the richness and dairy, go for it!
DO NOT get their cupcakes, they are so gross in my opinion. It literally tastes like grocery store cupcakes if not worse. They put WAY too much frosting, and the frosting is super sweet and filled with too much artificial coloring. I feel their cupcakes are not fresh and that they sit in the glass case ALL day because no one buys them or it seems like I even see the same ones over night/​the next day as well. Fresh cupcakes are only good day of. For cupcakes go to Let Them Eat Cake next to Yoloberry, way better.
