Specialties

The Davis Fencing Academy is the premier fencing club serving Davis and surrounding communities since 1999.

We offer instruction in all three modern fencing weapons (foil, épée, and saber) plus modern pentathlon. Our membership includes youth and adult fencers at all skill levels. We host multiple events throughout the year including: The Dick Berry Invitational, fencing camps, and The Bay Cup. New in 2015 the Davis Pentathlon was the largest U.S. pentathlon event in history! Our facility includes seven full length fencing strips with reels and two coaching strips. Electronic scoring is available on all fencing strips.

Davis Fencing Academy is a mixture of members with different backgrounds, interests and goals. From recreational fencers looking for healthy exercise to competitors looking for college scholarships and national championships, Davis Fencing Academy has it all.

Located in Yolo County, in the Central Valley of northern California, Davis is situated 11 miles west of Sacramento and 72 miles northeast of San Francisco.

History

Established in 1999.

Davis Fencing Academy got its start in the driveway of Dick Berry, the friend, coach and mentor of founder Simon Pitfield. After a year in the driveway, we moved into the Davis parks and recreation program, offering classes twice a week at the Senior Center.

Upon graduating from UC Davis, Simon opened the first Davis Fencing Academy location behind Savemart (which was Lucky’s then Albertson’s before we moved).

The academy moved to its present location in 2012 to get enough space for the growing population of fencers.

Business Owner

Simon Pitfield graduated UC Davis in 1999 with a degree in mathematics and opened the Davis Fencing Academy that fall. He received his fencing masters degree from the French Academy of Arms in 2000.

In 16 years as a professional fencing coach, he has started approximately 12,000 fencers, trained students to national points standings in all three weapons, and coached international pentathletes.

Many of his students have continued fencing in college (several with scholarships), often serving their team as coach, president, or captain.

When not at the academy, Simon enjoys playing with his family, reading, camping, and watching movies.
