Chautauqua

I’ve lived at a few other Tandem properties and a couple of houses in Davis, and Chautauqua may be my favorite place yet. The units are very spacious (especially the living rooms), and the 1BR + Loft was a very cool layout with a ton of open space due to high vaulted ceilings.
We don’t have any noise issues, and the neighborhood isn’t problematic. Even though our bedroom window faces the pool, we have yet to have a noise issue (this was a problem at every other apartment I’ve lived at). I work at a nearby Fire Department, from which I often come home exhausted, but my quality of sleep has been amazing since I moved to this comfortable setting.
It’s a part of the green belt, so I can literally step out the door and run to one of probably 15 beautiful nearby parks. Safeway and Savemart are pretty much equidistant, so I always have a choice of walking-​distance groceries, and a I’ve seen few bus lines pick up here if you’re a student and need to get to campus. Parking is always available for residents, and street parking is always available for guests (especially on Anderson, North of the Alvarado roundabout).
Like almost all Davis apartments, the cabinetry and some appliances are ‘70s-​esque, but everything in our apartment works perfectly and the AC/​Heater is extremely efficient (the first apartment where I am never too hot or too cold).
I used to live at Chaparral Apartments — where Kerry K. was previously the manager — but when she left, our experience turned pretty miserable with the new manager, Tara. The most pleasant surprise greeted me when I went to tour Chautauqua to find that Kerry had left to become the manager here. She is very friendly and organized, and goes out of her way to help her residents. More than once she has called me on a weekend to help with apartment issues. I’m transferring to a renovated 1BR next year because they look amazing, and she called me late last Sunday to let me know the unit I wanted had become available. No apartment manager I’ve met has worked all the way through the weekend like that.
All of the other staff here are fantastic, as well. The girls at the office are always sweet and accommodating, and the maintenance guys take care of any problem same-​day with a smile. If you see them around Chautauqua and have an issue, they’ll normally even pause what they are doing to help you. It kind of feels like a big family here.
I’d recommend Chautauqua to anyone. All of my friends that have lived here or are currently living here stayed more than one year (which is why I checked it out in the first place).

Do. Not. Rent. Here. I’d give zero stars if I could. I lived here for a year, and by the end, a few of my roommates wanted to move when the lease was up (one due to medical reasons). We were unsuccessful in finding replacements, and those of us left couldn’t afford the place on our own. When we informed the office, they replied that we were still responsible for the entire year lease and there was absolutely positively no way out, which is a LIE. And when we finally found a perfectly legal way out, so they could rent to someone else and we could all have been on our merry way, they were still scrambling for ways to keep us on the hook for the entire lease. So apparently they’re only a decent place to rent if you have absolutely no bad luck whatsoever in your life. Otherwise the office will straight up lie to your face to get that rent money out of you.
Oh, and the heater was always breaking, ants were everywhere in the summer months and a leaky roof led to water damage on the ceiling. Enjoy.

For the most part, the apartments in Davis are all the same: you get a roof over your head, a door that locks, running water, and electricity (at least I hope you do [but I’m not sure about the domes]). What sets Chautauqua apart from all the other complexes is their staff. The maintenance staff at Chautauqua Apartments was hands down the best I have ever had. They all worked diligently and knew how to fix everything on time. Plus, the maintenance staff seemed to know everyone by name, which made it all the more welcoming. Another great aspect of this complex is the pool — it’s open 24 hours per day!!!
To be honest, Chautauqua isn’t perfect. The apartments definitely show wear and tear (I think they are redoing the interior of a few) and the installed lighting is insufficient (nothing a few $ 5 lights from Ikea can’t fix).
If my roommates and I hadn’t graduated, we would still be living here — without a doubt.
P. s. If you don’t want cockroaches crawling in through your front door, then opt for an upstairs apartment. ;)

I lived here for a little bit before I studied abroad and a bit after. The hall way was dark and we did have loud neighbors above us and the management gave us free pizza. I had some good memories of hanging out here 1996 – 1997

This place is pretty decent. I had a couple friends who lived here and it’s pretty much next to many other popular apartment complexes like La Salle.
That means you’ll probably live near someone else you know from UC Davis, which is convenient.
I’m not sure how the rent goes, but it’s probably average.
It’s right on the corner of a roundabout and the bus comes often to the bus stop near the complex.
I believe all the apartments are one story and they’re not that big, just average.
I think the whole place is just average but for some reason I would rather live in the nearby apartments like Temescal or La Salle.
This place is worth checking out though.
