Description

Specialties

Innovative therapeutic day camp and Afterschool program for children/teens with mild to moderate emotional and social problems. Based on an individualized treatment plan, Quest campers receive supportive direction by trained counselors as they play. Using a neurodevelopmental model, Quest professional staff guides the therapeutic treatment to improve both emotional and social reasoning. Developed and led by Robert Field, Ph.D., campers participate in daily group therapy as well as the therapeutic milieu of regular activities. Each hour, campers receive verbal feedback about their successes and how they can improve. They earn points based on their efforts to buy toys and gift certificates in our store. Research found Quest to «have a strong treatment effect at reducing global impairment» allowing better success at school, home and with friends.

History

Established in 1989.

Now in it’s 25th year in the SF East Bay, Quest has helped thousands of families with children and teens with mild to moderate emotional and social problems. After developing an individualized treatment plan, campers participate in activities in a naturalistic environment so issues actually appear. Counselors trained in the psychological strategies developed by Robert Field, Ph.D. teach positive, alternative behaviors and coping skills and campers practice these within the group setting. Each year, new strategies are refined to improve the effectiveness of the program.

In 2009, Lisa Greenberg, PhD, completed her doctoral research on the Quest summer program. Based on the responses of 155 parents, there was a significant improvement in emotional coping, social reasoning and self-esteem. Additional research is being completed to support these results.

Quest now has developed programs in Southern California and Philadelphia and Pittsburgh, Pa.

Robert F.

Business Owner

Dr. Field began his private practice of Psychology in 1979, specializing in assessment and treatment of children and adolescents. After working in overnight summer camps through college, Dr. Field began running groups for children and adolescents to help emotional and social problems. In 1989, he started the first summer program combining traditional camp activities and effective psychotherapeutic techniques. While some campers did not like athletic activities, Quest took away the competitive aspect so everyone could play and enjoy.

Dr. Field is the father of four grown children, married to his wife, Debra who is the Administrative Director of the camps. After meeting in graduate school, Bob and Deb moved to the Bay Area to be closer to Deb’s family. Bob received his BS in Psychology at the University of Pittsburgh. Bob moved to California to attend the California School of Professional Psychology and completed is doctoral program in 1977.
