Paul J Slosar, MD

I personally sought out an expert opinion with Dr. Slosar in 2006 due to multi level spondylosis and spinal stenosis at L4-​L5. I made plans to see this surgeon which included an airplane trip up to San Francisco from the Southern CA area.
I had to incur hotel stay and other costs just to get to his Daly City medical office. When I finally arrived for my appointment, I was quickly ushered into an exam room where I was made to wait for almost an hour. Then a fellow resident came in to interview me and looked at my films in another room. I was never showed any evidence. He didn’t feel I was a good surgical candidate. When I stated that I was here to personally meet with Dr. Slosar because of the severity and complexity of the problem, he. finally popped into the exam room for several minutes.
Dr. Slosar further backed up the resident’s opinion about my case discouraging me having revision surgery. He took no time in helping me to sort out my options. As time has gone by, this surgeon has now expanded his practice. Including a website with many testimonials of his former patients whom he successfully operated on claiming they all got their lives back. Being a retired nurse, I felt this was the worst experience I had ever had dealing with a rude, disinterested surgeon who never got to the root cause of my orthopedic problem.

My husband and I are both patients of Dr. Slosar. He is an outstanding surgeon and has a amazing bedside manner. My husband has had back and neck surgery and I’m being treated for herniated disks in my neck. My husband works in the construction industry and has not missed a beat after either of his surgeries even with a demanding work load. We drive 3 hours in order to receive the best treatment. I have and would recommend Dr. Slosar and the spine care institute to anyone who suffers from back or neck issues.

Dr. Slosar has been a life saver for me! 2 spine surgeries and 1 neck surgery over the past 10 years. At 60, I am for the first time in my life pain free. I can take long walks without any pain, ride horse back, ski, etc. In the past I did all these with different degrees of pain.
He sets expectations appropriately. I know many people who had surgery with other doctors and few have had the results that I did. Dr. Slosar will not recommend surgery unless he feels strongly that he can help you!

I am leaving a neutral review because this is not really a review of Dr. Slosar, who I found to be an adequate doctor for the one visit I had to him. The issue I have with his office is that you will be charged a facilities fee from St. Francis Memorial Hospital for having even a basic appointment. My insurance (Blue Cross/​Blue Shield PPO) does cover visits to specialists, without any deductible, and thus that part of my visit was affordable ($ 40 in my case). However, St. Francis charged me $ 206 just for visiting his office — which is not in the St. Francis building — and on my insurance plan facilities charges are subject to a $ 1500 annual deductible. Thus, I found myself on the hook for $ 246 for a short, routine exploratory visit to Dr. Slosar.
If your insurance covers facilities charges, you’re fine. Just be aware that a visit to his office might cost you more than you were expecting.

In November of 2009 I began to feel severe back pain. I am always lifting and moving heavy things for my job so I brushed it off as muscle pain or over use. Towards the end of the month I found myself unable to leave my bed. I woke up one morning with with left leg numbness and pain at level 10. I was finally convinced, by my wife, to go to the hospital. Unfortunately the pain was so severe my wife had to dial 911 and I was taken to the hospital in an ambulance.
My pain was finally controlled at the hospital but the hospital wanted to perform emergency surgery to correct the leg numbness which did not dissipate. After consulting with family and friends I decided to go and get a second opinion.
Dr. Slosar came highly recommended by several people. Dr. Slosar and his staff saw me the following week. Dr. Slosar recommended surgery and stated he could do it anytime I needed. Back surgery was a scary thought for me so I tried to ignore the pain and numbness. I got a call, at home, one night from Dr. Slosar. He asked how I was doing and I told him I had no improvement and I felt like it was getting worse. Dr. Slosar scheduled my surgery for a few days later.
I went into surgery on December 2, 2009 and when I woke up my pain and numbness were gone. I cannot say enough about Dr. Slosar, his staff and the hospital. Dr. Slosar checked up on me at the hospital and called me at home while I was recovering. Dr. Slosar and his staff answered all my questions and made sure that my recovery was on track. On May 2, 2010 (exactly 6 months, to the day, after surgery) I completed the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon. I was never a competitive athlete but last year I participated in 9 races, finishing in the top of my age group in most of them.
Thank you Dr. Slosar for giving me my life back and giving me the courage be stronger and better than I was before.

After waiting 30 minutes for him, I was made to feel like I was wasting his time. He literally suggested I lose at least 50 pounds the same way someone would if they were «stranded on a desert island» before coming back to see him again. Then told me, «I don’t think you’ll do it.»
Instead of asking how much I knew about my 8 years of diabetes, he went on to explain common terms in a condescending way assuming I would have no idea what he was talking about.
Arrogant doesn’t even come close. He clearly doesn’t need any new business (being the «President» of the Spine Care Medical Group), so you would be better off going to someone who wants to work with you.
