History

Established in 1957.

TDO was founded in 1957 by Larry Kelly. TDO has fostered new opera talent over the last 54 years. Placido Domingo, Joan Sutherland, John Vickers are just a few opera stars who made their Amerian Debuts at the Dallas Opera.

We are longtime subscribers to the Dallas opera… well, sort of. We used to be subscribers, then we had kids and took at 7 year break from our social life, and we started subscribing again last season.
I was sooooo excited for Dallas to get a proper Opera House and the Winspear is fantastic. Tips on picking seats:
If you have any sort of fear of heights, do not sit in the front row of the 5th tier. Our first seats were there and I still swear that someone is eventually going to go over the rail. We are cheap-​seats people We would rather do more, but not have the best seats than sit up front but only go to one show. Our current seats aren’t bad for the price. We are on the forth level, but the first pair of seats on the side. We get the price break of being on the side (which can have some line of site restrictions, particularly the further in you go), but being the first seats, there really wasn’t any problem seeing the entire stage.
The Dallas Opera has done a decent job with nearly every show I’ve seen (although the costumes at this season’s Don Giovanni were just plain strange), my issue is their show selection. For the love of God, do you need to do a Mozart opera EVERY season? We would love to see more Wagner and I honestly think if they publicized the quintessential fat lady with the horned helmet on her head, they might lead some new Dallasites to the opera… just saying.

Cringe.
The soprano left much to be desired. She ruined it for me.
The men, the tenor, 2 baritones and basses were pretty darn good.
I suggest going to a performace where there are less roles for the soprano.
