Royal Sixty District Bistro

This was on my bookmarked list so I decided to try it today since I wasn’t too far. The place looked closed from the outside and today for lunch I was only one of 5 other diners here (and they are only open for lunch too).
The place has a ‘hushed’ almost unfriendly vibe to it: the old waiter kind of slinks around although when he decides to walk up to you he is friendly in an aloof sort of way.
The menu was a copy of a copy, run on a copier using cheap paper stock, and the print was skewed. Very sloppy. The menu items/​offerings are GF (gluten free) or P (paleo) or neither, just look for the letter code in front of every item. Also check out the black board for today’s specials.
I ordered the Ahi Tuna Salad and a side of Israeli Couscous: dang did it take forever to get. Did they go fishing for the tuna? Overall if was all good, not great, not worth a special trip, if you are within walking distance come over but otherwise go elsewhere to dine. Of course the old man forgot about my couscous order. Sheesh!
My low grade is for overall feel, vibe, waiter and time it took for my food to show up.

Promising – then disappointing.
Not easy to find. Very interesting menu. Super excited to have a Paleo option close by. Nice size dining room. Only 4 other people in the whole place. Food time was over half an hour, then came out with substitutes on 2 of the 4 entrees for my party because they were out of various ingredients. Food was ok, but I got razzed for the whole experience all the way back to the office.

interior was beautiful, prices very reasonable, especially for the menu items served, service was stellar, immediately corrected my over-​cooked tuna salad. Great choice for affordable food when in the design district

Well, I’ve never written a bad review but here goes!
I’m currently at my office eating a frozen veggie burger because my meal never arrived nearly 2 hours later!
We arrived around 12:20, it’s a Friday. We took a «quick» business lunch, party of 7 & there were maybe 3 other small party tables seated when we arrived. I ordered the vegetarian special (3 sides of veggies) that I sadly never got to try. Once some of my coworkers food started to arrive (two plates at a time) many of the dishes were cold & no one really liked their meal. They said everything was very bland. My coworker who orders the the paleo burger salad said it was very dry. Another coroner who ordered bison said it was not good at all. I tasted a bite of the salmon & it was okay but not exactly what she ordered.
I felt bad for the matredee/​server & our drink re-​filler who were both very nice & apologetic. Clearly it wasn’t there fault, the kitchen is severely miss-​run. They didn’t charge us anything since it was such a cluster but we did leave him a nice tip.
Such a shame we won’t be retuning because the location is convenient with us working in the design district & the hibiscus tea was nice.

This review is for the delivery only – I’ve never been to the restaurant, but after the delivery lunch I just got, I never want to. I ordered the Ahi Tuna Salad on GrubHub. I should have gotten: «Fresh seared ahi tuna, pineapple, cucumber, mixed greens, feta cheese and red chili vinaigrette.» I’ll break down what I actually got instead.
First: the «fresh seared ahi tuna» I’m willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. When I see «fresh seared ahi tuna» on a menu, I think of thin slices of red, sushi-​grade tuna with a fresh sear on all sides. What I got was a grey chunk of meat about the size of my palm. I thought maybe they just wanted to keep the heat in during the delivery process, and that’s why they didn’t slice it. When I cut into it, the middle was a greyish pink – far more cooked than the traditional ahi sear you would expect, and not cooked enough to be considered fully cooked. Now fully regretting risking my lunch on delivery tuna, I cut the hockey puck of tuna into bite-​sized pieces. It mostly tastes fishy, with only the slightest hint of what might have been seasoning. I am writing this review as I eat – was so upset I couldn’t wait – and after a few bites have decided to stop eating the tuna. It tastes so fishy I’m legitimately worried I might get sick.
Next: «pineapple.» None. Got green apples instead. I don’t mind apples, but I expect an establishment to give me what is on the menu. If you need to make a substitution, tell me.
Next: «cucumber.» Present. Some are fresher than others, but unlike the tuna, at least edible.
Next: «mixed greens.» Again, present. The romaine is good – the rest of the mixed greens are wilted and brown in spots. Overall, If I saw these greens at the grocery store I wouldn’t buy them.
Next: «feta cheese.» The one thing this salad got right, and the one thing that made my apples, cucumbers, and romaine edible. You might ask, «shouldn’t those things have been edible on their own?» Not in this salad, because…
Finally: «red chili vinaigrette.» This is the biggest offender of this sad excuse for a salad. First off, it came in a little plastic cup WITH NO LID. A restaurant that has delivery actually has no lid for its disposable condiment cups. The plastic cup was wrapped with a fistful of plastic wrap. As should be expected, while my salad was being delivered the dressing leaked out of the edges of the plastic cup and seeped into the crevices of the wad of plastic wrap. This created a ball of drippy, sticky plastic that had to be unwrapped over my salad to prevent it from getting all over my desk. Which is why my salad was covered in the «red chili vinaigrette» before I knew better. What this place calls a «red chili vinaigrette» is really milky orange water with a hint of something spicy. The consistency is water. The appearance is a blend of water and milk with a drop of orange food coloring. The taste is water with maybe a pinch of chili powder. Does Royal Sixty even know what a vinaigrette is? Vinegar and oil. There is no vinegar or oil in this disgusting pale orange mess. I sincerely don’t know how the chef here gets away with thinking he or she can call this a vinaigrette.
I can’t believe I wasted $ 16 on such a gross excuse for a salad. I also can’t believe all the rave Unilocal reviews this place has gotten. Maybe the brick-​and-​mortar is vastly better than the delivery. But if you’re ever thinking of ordering from Royal Sixty on GrubHub, DON’T.

Went back! They were out of the special, that was still listed on the board. service only fair! Seemed like a change in staff!

This place is a gem! They started us off with a nice cucumber amuse bouche. We started with the fried green tomatoes. Very crisp and juicy. Next came the gazpacho, which had amazing flavor and a nice finish. Then came the main dish, a beautifully prepared BBQ pulled chicken served on a brioche bun and topped with homemade cole slaw. I would have taken a picture but it smelled so awesome that I dove right in. If you can take it, try the chocolate brownie!

Royal Sixty is incredible! Their new menu is fresh and scrum-​diddley-​umptious!!! The menu had good variety and had many Paleo-​conscious options. One item I had to try was the watermelon and gazpacho soup. I’m normally not a fan of gazpacho but it sounded so crazy I had to try it and my taste buds did an 80s style jumping high five! The staff is personable and professional. I’m salivating like an English Mastiff just thinking about it! If you haven’t been since the new menu has been in effect then you are doing yourself a great injustice! All heil Royal Sixty!!!

In Dallas for a conference, I realized I only had one chance to get away from the hotel for a meal due to the schedule, so set about finding somewhere within walking distance for lunch. Unilocal reviews led me here, and it was exactly what I wanted.
Royal Sixty is located in a design center-​you have to be looking for it.
Inside it is designer loft meets tea room, with a bit of a «ladies who lunch» vibe (but not stuffy), and I really liked it.
The service was there when I needed them, but not overly friendly. The rolls and butter given on arrival were a bit blah and not worth the calories for me, so I left them. I got the grilled salmon salad for lunch and loved it! Salmon cooked perfectly, lots of capers and feta, and the tastes of these, the salmon and the dressing came together wonderfully. I would highly recommend!

I had the salmon salad special with blue cheese crumbles. Enjoyed my lunch and conversation with Wendy the owner.

The tea service was definitely fun but left me hungry! This is definitely a girly place. Great tea but everything else was blah.

Love this place! It is such a fun place to have high tea. The signature tea comes with 3 different flavors of tea, soup, 5 – 6 various tea sandwiches and 5 – 6 mini desserts. The tomato bisque that comes with the tea is AMAZING! I could easily come in for a bucket of this an be perfectly happy. The sandwiches always seem to be a bit stale but the dessert is good (especially the fudge) and the experience itself makes me give Royal Sixty 4 stars.

A co-​worker likes to venture out for lunch. Thank goodness, because I needed to get out of the office this week.
We ended up at Royal Sixty and I was NOT unhappy. We walked in and there were were a lot of open tables, but the people who were there were having a wonderful time.
We were seated immediately and shown the daily specials. I loved the atmosphere. The music was upbeat and jazzy.
They served a tiny teacup of consommé (cute) and little balls of bread with butter.
I ordered the seafood crapes (get this) and they were stuffed! It was two small pillows full of crap, lobster and some other heavenly sea creatures. WONDERFUL. The hibiscus tea is perfect — not too sweet, not too tart, just right.
I am looking forward to my next visit.

Royal Mom
Chandelier? Check. Tiny cup of consommé presented upon seating? Check.
Tiny tea sandwich combo platter? Piano player? Check. Check.
In the warehouses of the design district houses a lunch spot, fit for a visit with Mom.
But it’s cool. The homey classic, split pea soup, actually tastes good, and kicks it up a notch, with fresh bacon and homemade dessert twists like coconut lemon bars designed by long Dallas caterer, Wendy Crispin Caterer, makes sure that you’ll enjoy it too. (despite the frou)
The piano player was churning out a cover of The Carpenter’s «Superstar» that even evoked a little Sonic Youth hip.

I went to Royal Sixty for dinner with my sister on a Groupon but based on information from their website and other reviewers, I see now that they are only serving lunch.
The restaurant is located in The International in the Design District. There is ample parking in a lot in front of the restaurant. The atmosphere is pretty nice without being overly stuffy — appropriate for a low-​key girls’ outing. The service was good — our server was very cordial.
I ordered and highly recommend the brie & wild mushroom queso as an appetizer. I ordered the fish of the day (I believe it was salmon but can’t quite remember) with a side of wild pecan orange rice and steamed vegetables. The entrée was just ok, not really remarkable. I ordered the poached pear and crème anglaise crêpe for dessert. Apparently, the dessert is supposed to be lit on fire for a bit of dramatic flair but ours would not light — so they just gave us the crêpe doused in liquor. It was inedible at that point and when asked, they gladly gave us a new crêpe sans alcohol bath. Once again, the crêpe was just ok.
I think that this restaurant has a lot of potential with its offerings, given that there aren’t too many dining options at this time in the Design District but there is much room for improvement. I would be willing to give it another try for midday tea now that dinner is not an option.

I made reservations for high tea. From start to finish, it took 2 hours. Service was a bit slow, but there was only 2 servers, and I was in no hurry to get anywhere, so I was fine with it.
I got the seasonal seated tea. It has 4 different teas for each course.
Curried carrot bisque with cheese straw– YUM!
Savory sandwiches– I looked at their online menu, and now thinking back to what I had, they served me half the sandwiches from the current seasonal menu and the other half from the standard tea. So… yeah…didn’t get exactly what was listed on the seasonal menu. But they were still pretty tasty.
Desserts– listing on their website. It was good. Nothing really stood out. I got too full to finish my scone.
I’d definitely come back on a monthly basis to try their seasonal teas. I’d also come back other times to try their regular menu. They also have daily specials. Their hibiscus ice tea is good too!
My server was Amelia and she was great. They place your bill inside a book. That’s very different. This is definitely my first pick for seated tea because it’s more modern and chic for me versus other places that I’ve been to which, judging by the décor, seems to be geared towards the elderly.
**Note: They’re only open for lunch. They don’t serve dinner anymore.

We liked our server. I think her name was Lisa. The décor is nice, simple and clean.
We had a party of 7.
The food still needs a little work. Several meals came out about 5 min after others and it was a little slow.
Don’t order the tea sandwiches/​soup/​salad. One was something they said was tuna but several of us tasted it and it did not taste like tuna and the bread was overpowering whatever the mystery meat was in the middle. The pimento resembled red pepper spread but there wasn’t even enough on there to make the bread stick together and the white bread was hard. The only edible sandwich was the cream cheese sandwich.
If you do go here we gave 3 stars to our salad salmon, French dip, pasta special. One of the ladies got the chicken cordon blue and we agreed it looked the best if you want fried chicken on mashed potatoes.
We missed the food from the previous Wendy Krispin’s restaurant.

Great new place to lunch in the Design District! Beautiful dining room, friendly service and out of this world food! I thoroughly enjoyed the special crepes of the day along with a cup of tortilla soup… I think that was my perfect lunch! And by the way, the bread and butter is amazing as well… trust me, I rarely say that and rarely «waste» room in my tummy or calories for bread.

Since this place is in a very low traffic area of the Design District (unless you’re an interior decorator or other über-​fashionable type), it’s a destination for most people but man is it worth it.
I’ll preface by saying I hate tea rooms and that, is essentially what this is. They’re only open for lunch now but the staff mentioned they were looking to serve afternoon tea and maybe evening wine in the future. Despite my lack of love for the girlyness of the tea room, the food at this place is worth sucking it up.
Start with the atmosphere: the interior looks like it was decorated by a wedding designer, aka it’s quite nice, and the restaurant is very open and inviting (especially during this weather). But the icing on the cake as far as the setting is the piano player. Where else are you going to hear classics on a grand piano during a business lunch? Awesome.
Ok, now to the real star, the food. I thought the place was going to be French and I suppose it is, but like I said, tea-​room, so there’s lots of sandwiches, salads, soups, quiches, etc. And chicken and waffles (random), which unfortunately no-​one in my lunch group was adventurous enough to order. The food is awesome. I had the chicken pesto sandwich with homeade potato chips, homemade potato chips. Delicious. Everything on the sandwich was perfect. The salads were raved about as well. Next time I’m trying the pimento cheese and bacon sandwich, sounds healthy no?
The place is run by Wendy Krispin, the caterer Wendy Krispin, so she knows her stuff. Trust me it merits a drive to the neighborhood (check out some galleries while you’re over there?) and if you’re a guy, don’t be turned off by the feminine interior, the food is WORTH it. Now when to go back.

Very delicious and artfully presented. I had the brie and mushroom queso which had great flavor and was the perfect temperature, and the special for the day– a spinach pie with greek salad. Very good, and the portions were just right!
Will definitely be going again, as it’s a great lunch alternative in the Design District, which has limited restaurant options. Getting sick of the Meddlesome Moth…
