I took a trip to Hickory House because I was staying nearby and they were the closest BBQ joint still open. While I don’t regret my trip there, it’s certainly not the best barbecue. The location is pretty charming, and it really is a throwback to the BBQ spots of old. The food was just OK. I had a 2-meat plate. The brisket was decent, but the pulled pork was a bit dry. The sides were equally uninspiring, but I was hungry and I love all barbecue(almost all). They do have beer, which is cool, and have a hodge-podge of random TVs around the restaurant that I’m sure they’d tune to whatever you wanted to watch. PROS: –Charming location –Patio seating –Friendly staff –Very low prices for barbecue CONS: –Place seemed a little dirty –so-so pulled pork –mushy mac and cheese

It was a rainy Friday went to Hickory house BBQ to have a sandwich beef sliced, with Frys. The beef brisket was nice and juicy and the barbecue sauce compliment it. And that’s all I have to say about that.

Attention world — if you’re from out of town and wanting to try Texas barbecue, DONOTCOMEHERE. That said, if you’re local and want an interesting place to grab a bite, Hickory House fits the bill. It’s a throwback in terms of décor, menu and pricing. In addition to average-at-best BBQ, they also have chicken fried steak and café sides. I don’t dig on green beans, but my friends go back just to have them. The one random menu item, and I can only assume it’s because the ownership wants it, is gyro. So seeing as it’s a barbecue joint, I get mine with meat and cheese only, and a side of BBQ sauce for dipping. it’s pretty damn good.

Not the greatest food, but throwback atmosphere and curb service are good for a nostalgic trip. Average sliced beef sandwich, crispy fries, good curb service.

Hickory house gets 5 stars from me because the proprietors have steadfastly refused to ruin its character by updating it. HH is a step back in time, and when you’re in the mood for timeless soul food, this is the place to come. The other reason I give them 5 stars is due to the hamburgers. This place is genuinely one of two places in all of DFW that I know of that still adhere to a 50’s &60’s recipe. fresh, never frozen, buns oil buttered & toasted on a sticky flat grill, just delicious. It’s simply an authentic genuine taste very hard to fond nowadays. If you want to take the kids back to the sixties for burgers the way Jesus intended… take’m here :)

If you are trying to get as much food as you can for $ 10.00, this place is great, but if you are looking for good bbq, it’s not great. It’s bad. I ordered a 4 meat plate with Brisket, ribs, ham and sausage. The brisket was thin, dry and tasteless. The ribs were dry and tough as beef jerky. The sausage was eckridge farms. Which I like. At home. And the ham was generic circular sliced canned ham heated up on the grill. Which I also like. At home. If they served this food in a prison, there would be a riot.

This place really made me sad. It’s got the look of greatness from the outside. It’s got that appeal of an urban old fashion real«Pit BBQ» look and I was really hoping this place would be good. But… I’m sorry… it was one notch better than hospital bbq. This place has been around a long time and I’m afraid they’ve not heard of rubs, moist brisket(I’m sure they only buy the flat) smoke rings ECT. The brisket was sliced paper thin and was still tough as nails, the ribs were a bit better than the brisket but still not good, the ham I’m sure was previously some sort of ham baloney in a pure liquid congealed form prior, and the sausage was the cheap Eckard’s type brand. The price was good however… A four piece plate was $ 9.75. You aren’t going to find that price at too many places. The Hickory House was really disappointing. Whomever, is giving this place good reviews has got to be completely out of touch with BBQ.

Great barbeque! Frankly, it is a little hidden. Did not care for their green beans or baked beans. Everything else seems great, especially what matters — the meat itself! Plenty of parking during day. Not sure about at night.

This place is good! The food was everything I had heard about and so was the wait staff. Extremely friendly people work there and they make sure you are well taken care of. The place is an old dive BBQ joint and is great. Don’t let the digs scare you because the food is worth it. The lunch special was well worth the money, $ 5.95 for a BBQ plate with three sides add the drink and the cost was under $ 8 for the meal. Make sure to stop by!

i had jury duty over there at frank crowley. the judge gave us an hour for lunch and rather than eat in the cafeteria i decided i had time to walk down and get some tacos from fuel city. on the way, i passed upon hickory house so i thought i’d give it a try. ordered the sliced bricket sammy with fries. the meat was a little dry and also tough/chewy, not my idea of good bbq.

I asked my cousin to take me out for some authentic Texas BBQ so he took me here. The ambiance is what I would have expected it to look like. A real authentic roadhouse serving great BBQ. We were greeted promptly by our waiter who gave us great and prompt service. We ended up ordering our food from the menu. It didn’t take too long to get the food. I ordered the rib platter that came with two sides. I ended up ordering the french fries and baked beans. The ribs were pretty cool. I was hoping for more of a smoked flavor but they were good. The fries were ok but the beans. Ugh. SOBLAND. I don’t think I’ve ever tasted worst beans. All in all this place is pretty good. I’d like to give it another try when back in town.

Good and cheap. Thank goodness for spell check because my fingers are so greasy from the cheeseburger I had that my keys are sticking together! I gave up fried food for lent and wasnt in the mood for BBQ but had to eat here because of my client. So I ordered the«mouth watering cheeseburger» with a baked potato instead of fries. The sweet little waitress asked if I wanted to add chopped brisket to my burger. Thats like asking me if I would like a massage with a happy ending… of course I would! Haha(j/k) So my potato came out with my burger and it was a normal size thankfully. Shredded cheese, butter, sourcream and brisket. The potato was kind of cold like it had been baked a while back but once I added the BBQ it warmed it up and it was awesome. I like the tangy kick of the sauce and the chopped onions that are swimming around in it too. So on to the burger… this was a pretty good sized burger. Not the biggest I had but definitely one of the tastiest. It came with lettuce, tomato, pickels and onions and the bun was soft but still nice and crusty from being on the griddle. The burger had the nice crunch to it and was seasoned perfectly. It was so juicy it started running down my arm… thank God for long sleeves! Next time I will try the ribs because my client loved them… and so did his shirt!

RIBTACULARLUNCHSPECIALALERT! $ 5.41 Wednesday = RIBS, mashed potatoes, vegetable, salad or slaw, rolls and tea. It’s a huge amount of food. You can add a dollar and upgrade those mashed taters for a baked potato with sour cream, cheese and butter. It was GREAT! The ribs are – in fact – ribtacular. There was a huge amount of meat and I pulled the bone right out of it. Outside was crispy and smokey. Inside was tender and juicy. There were three of them and yes I’m so full I may actually explode. We are all waiting for that moment, aren’t we? It is inevitable. I also picked up some sandwiches last night to take to my step-dad in the hospital(knee replacement that went very well). Chopped beef and chopped beef with sausage, baked potato and potato salad. He pronounced it yummy… yummy enough that I did not get any. It looked really good. I did sneak a taste of the potato salad, creamy with lots of flecks of pepper and pickle, mustard style. It was some of the best I’ve had. While I was waiting for my sandwiches last night I got to meet some of the folks who work at and or own Hickory House. This place has been in business since the 50’s. WOW! That’s some history for you. I’d love to sit down and go, «so on the day Kennedy was assasinated what was the mood in here? What were people saying? So, when we landed on the moon…» You get the idea. There’s a place for car hops to deliver food to the car. There’s a dining room for sit down dinner. And they are open until 9 p.m. It’s almost right across the street from Fuel City. This place is a keeper. And I hear rumors of excellent enchilada platter and chicken fried steak. I will keep you abreast of the situation as it unfolds.

I have a limited amount of time at lunch. I have one hour. I was excited to find Hickory House close to where I work. I should have noticed it earlier since I hit Fuel City all the time, but I’m coming from the other direction. I tried it out for lunch today and it was great. The chopped beef sandwich with a side of beans and potato salad hit the spot. The prices were right too. I will go again soon. Being able to eat in my car was a real plus when pressed for time. Next time I may branch out and try some of the not bbq stuff on the menu. The hops were really nice. How long has this place been here? I had no idea.

It’s my last day in Dallas; I realized I had not tried any BBQ. I had tried I Tex-Mex twice and Southern food twice it was definitely time to try some Texas BBQ. We ask a local and he suggests the Hickory House, but adds he hasn’t been in years; we were looking for something pretty close to her place and this foot the bill. You walk in and feel like you walked back in time. The place has great character. The tables are wobbly and the booths are a little torn up from years of use, there is wood paneling on the wall and the kitchen is open so you can see what’s going on back there. But what ever you do please do not look up the ceiling is scary, and needs to be replaced ASAP. I would say its grim goes with its charm but the ceiling grim does not go with anything. Debby was or server and she was friendly and helpful in answering this non-BBQ eating out of state-ers dumb questions. I decided on the lunch special which was BBQ pork ribs, corn, French fries and cole slaw. The pork ribs were wonderful, the cole slaw was a little too sweet for me but the fries were fine as was the corn. In my non-BBQ eating out of state’ers opinion it was some tasty BBQ. My side kick went with the beef plate with coleslaw and potato salad. She felt the same about the cole slaw but liked the potato salad. She said the beef was good though it did not look very appealing when it was first sat down in front of her. For those looking to enjoy some BBQ and happy hour at the same time a sign on the wall stated they had happy hour Monday to Saturday with $ 1.75 long necks 4:00 pm to close. I will add that there were some scary people there outside we ran into a lady with wet pants asking to use a phone because she just got out of jail! Not a place to go alone, probably better to get your order to go because everyone around the joint looked a little road hard and put away wet but the food was good the service was friendly. The one big downfall of this place is an hour later I still smelled the hickory smoke I felt sorry for the person sitting next to me on the plane to San Diego.

Hickory House is located in Dallas’s Butt Crack — Industrial Boulevard. Its like this place has been in a time warp from the 50s prices and all. They could film movies there it gritty and authentic. The most expensive item is $ 8. Most sandwiches are in the $ 2 – 3 range. BBQ was good but I’ve had better — I tried the ribs. Also have breakfast all day and $ 2 beers. Omlete and a Lone Star? Sounds good to me! Industrial Blvd is definitely worth exploring other finds nearby include fuel city(best tacos in Texas according to Texas Monthly), and Raul;s Little Mexico
