The loaded potato was great. There were perfect flavors and tenderness in the meat, huge serving sizes and it was fresh. I couldn’t even finish a third of it. The place isn’t fancy by any means, but I’m there to eat not have a photoshoot. Definitely more than satisfied with the food.

Love this place. Everything is dope! I just brought to large orders of potato salad to a party and everyone loved it. I usually get half pound of sliced brisket meat and it’s perfect. My fav BBQ sauce and the brisket is soooo lean it’s like cutting butter. It’s just right and I have to control myself or I’ll eat the whole half pound myself! Baked potato was yummy like all their stuff. Place is safe, no frills. Don’t let the reputation of the area deter you, it’s right off the expressway and the folks running the place take no nonsense. Go to H&J!!!

I love this place, I don’t care that it is a hole in the wall! I get the stuffed baked potato with chopped beef and it is the best I’ve had! I had to change my rating to 4 stars because the customer service«mike» had was terrible this day. The young lady has always been nice. Had a coworker pick up our orders and I had to call up there to have them give her my 3 cups of sour cream that I ordered after he told her«you only paid for 2.» OK charge for the 3rd& give what we ordered! No reason for sorry customer service. Who wants to spend $ 40 on 3 potatoes and be treated that way?

This place really Is a hidden gem. It could possibly be the best bbq in dallas. I’ve lived in oak cliff for 20 yrs. And didn’t even know about this place until a friend told me about it a couple of years ago. It’s some of the best I’ve ever had. It’s true old school no bull crap texas bbq and the strawberry cake is slap your mama good.

Holy delicious! This place is super tasty! It’s a tiny spot in the middle of a neighborhood. It’s not much to look at but you don’t come to this place for the décor. I ordered the baked potato with links and all the fixings. Huge. I couldn’t finish more than a third. The flavors are amazing! You get punched in the taste buds with the delicious smokey sauce and spice and spuddiness. The textures are perfect and work so well together.

I love a good hole in the wall! And H & J Barbeque is definitely a hole in the wall! When I pulled up, I wasn’t even sure it says open, but then I saw a «We are open» sign. I was greeted by pleasant young lady, and I ordered the loaded baked potato. I didn’t hv to wait long. Now, I don’t claim to be bbq conaseuir or anything, but this bbq was good! It had flavor, and everything! It wasn’t tough, like it was yesterday’s meat. It was fresh. The potato was huge, and fluffy & they didn’t skimp on the cheese or the meat, which I appreciate! And it was topped with green onions & a side if sour cream! I was pleased! I could only eat ½ of it. Lol! I took a star simply b, /c it’s a bit dated on the inside, I barely knew if they were open. The sinage was poor, but I love supporting our African American establishments and this is a good one! I wouldn’t go at night, alone. But I’ll definitely be back!

First impression– I’m glad I didn’t come here at night time. Menu is kind of expensive, and there are only 3 sides. But the food was delicious! Their sauce is top notch.

After I ordered my food, I asked if the foil could be removed from the potato, I was told«no». I asked for the foil to be removed because I lived far from the place, and knew by the time I arrive home, my food would be cold. Without having the foil on it would be easy to reheat it, but I guess he didn’t understand that, even after i explained iy to him. The guy was absolutely adamant about not removing the foil, and even yelled at me for asking. Needless to say, I took myself, the $ 50 that I planned on spending here right on over to good old TD’s where the food and customer service are always on point.

I am a true Texan, as I like my backyard BBQ’s and Iced Tea. For the last couple of years, I had been trying to find a good BBQ joint in the area, as others had failed to impress me as I have gotten older and tastebuds sensitive. H&J had hit the nail. Most people might shyed away because of the location, but the best food is usually in the most non-descript locations. My top fav is the Chopped Beef Sandwich. Very lean as they remove the fat, whereas most places’ chopped beef is full of FAT!!! YUCK. I like my food pretty moist, so I ALWAYS grab me a side of sauce. The baked potatoes are the best this side around and do not fail to disappoint. They don’t skimp on the fixings and it takes me about two days to eat. DONOTMISSTHISPLACE!

Yes, I agree the hole– in-the-wall look of the place was daunting. However, the folks working there couldn’t have been more friendly and helpful. The sliced brisket was literally mouth watering and the ribs were also literally falling off the bone. The only side we had was the fries, but they had some very yummy sweet and mildly spicy seasoning that was really good. I’d definitely go back again.

No it’s not the best location as so many have said before me, but who cares when you’re busy licking your fingertips?! Do like we always do. GETITTOGO! All of their meats are great. I have never tried the sides so I can’t comment on those. If you’ve gotten this far on my review, you are reading way too much! Lol! Head on out to the south side of D-Town and give this place a try. You won’t be disappointed!

Food in da Hood YO! So I was working on-site at a school and looked around for a place to eat for lunch and the only restaurants around me were BBQ joints or fried chicken places. Got a little craving for some BBQ so we decided on H & J. This is a true hole-in-the-wall with very little frills. The don’t even have a fountain drink machine; they have a vending machine in the restaurant. When I go to a new BBQ, I tend to order a sampler-type platter so I can decide what I like if I ever come back. I got the J.J. Platter which consisted of sausage, briskets, ribs, and 4 slices of white bread. I also ordered a side of potato salad. The sausages were okay and the skin was kind of tough while the briskets were very tender and moist. The ribs were pretty dry and I wasn’t a fan. The bbq lathered on top of the meats were decent. It had a very ketchupy-tomatoey(made-up word) taste with a little spice. The potato salad was creamy and good. I’d probably won’t be back in the area anytime soon, but if I were in the area and dined here again, I’d choose the sliced briskets.

The décor is very downhome and the building is rickety looking, but those are the places that make the best freakin’ BBQ! And H & J does NOT disappoint! It is the best I’ve ever had in my life, no joke. I might have seen Jesus in the potato salad. I tried the ribs(which were falling off the bone the moment i touched them) and the sliced brisket which was insanely good. The sides were potato salad with a bit of egg(and Jesus!) in it and beans with a bit of chopped brisket in it. That’s the way you do it! The guy sitting at the table next to me was«mmmm”-ing every time he took a bite, which was a bit off-putting, but a small price to pay for such good eats! To add to the down-home ness of the place, the meal was served with red Kool-Aid! LOVEIT! If you want sodas, they have them, but you just have to buy it out of the machine. Simple as that. And don’t forget to staple your business card on the the wall on the way out the door to say«I came, I saw, I had a religious experience while eating this BBQ.»

How many times have you seen this place cruising down I35 South and never stopped because you had already passed by? Or maybe your fragile sensibilities were disturbed by the looks? Or maybe the«Fish and BBQ» raised your BBQ snobbery flag? Whatever the reason might be, next time do yourself a favor, exit Laureland, and venture into H & J’s. The building is pretty non-descript, old, and run down but don’t fret. When you hop of the car and get that first whiff of glorious smoke, you won’t look back. Tip: Grab some change from the car if you want a soda, because you have to get it out of a machine. You order at the counter, and the food is prepared in the back then brought out to your table. The service was very friendly. Had ribs, hot links, cole slaw, and beans for lunch. Tip: Get the sauce on the side. Then, if you like it that much, go ahead and drown your meat in it. Don’t get me wrong the sauce is decent, but the meat is good enough to stand on its own. And, I wish I had gotten two orders of beans or tried a different side than the cole slaw. I can’t put my finger on it, but I didn’t really care for the it. Maybe too much mayo. The beans were awesome and had little pieces of brisket in them. Now on to the good, good stuff, and they give you plenty of it… I couldn’t eat my whole meal. Pffffft, I know. The ribs were on the cusp of greatness. The outsides were nice and crisp and they were fall of the bone tender with just a good all around juicy, smokey pork flavor. The hot links were good to great too. Outside was crisp and slightly peppery and the inside was fairly course but not rubbery. Definitely on my list of potential stops when I’m ditching Dallas for our kitschy, more liberal neighbor just a few hours to the south. H & J’s beats the hell out of any drive thru for sure… Post H & J’s a compadre shared an Alaskan Smoked Porter with me. The perfect cap to a damn good barbecue lunch, but that is a different story all together.
