Gecko Hardware

My favorite little neighborhood store. They have hardware, of course, but also locally made gifts, demonstrations, gardening and chicken supplies etc… I always find something I need and the people that work there are very friendly and helpful. Always nice to see George the rooster and the baby chicks too. The store needs our support though, so if you live in east Dallas or Lake Highlands, I encourage you to visit soon!

When this place first opened, it was amazing! Not only were all of the employees helpful and knowledgeable about the products, they always seemed to be having a great time and were so happy to stop and help me or anyone else who needed them. Unfortunately, that is no longer the case.
I’m not quite sure when exactly everything changed, but it has just gotten worse and worse with each visit. I stopped shopping at this store after several bad experiences in one trip last year including an employee calling my wife «baby» and another following me around acting like I was going to steal something, while what seemed to be an influx of new employees couldn’t even answer any of the questions I’d had at the time. The owner was strutting around bragging about all of the wildlife she had «rescued» and couldn’t be bothered by me, so she directed me to one of the employees who had already told me they couldn’t help me.
Recently, I decided to give the store one more shot because I believe in supporting locally owned businesses, but there were very few products on the shelves, and of those products, nothing useful to me. Gone are all of the employees who seemed to love their jobs, replaced by people who look like they’re trying, but it seems forced. I wouldn’t be surprised if this place is put out of its misery soon!

I remember coming here a few years ago and this place was amazing! It had EVERYTHING a hardware store should have and MORE. This was when Zach was the owner.
Nowadays… this place has gone down hill as it is under new management. I came in and the shelves were almost empty.
I initially came in to get some tips on keeping chickens and building my own coop (they sell chickens here), and one of the staff members told me «you do know chickens aren’t toys right?» YOU’VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME?! I said nothing in response and walked right out the door.
I give this place a few more months before it closes down for good.

Who doesn’t love Gecko?! Their staff are amazingly sweet, helpful, and attentive folks. They have a great variety of items and even fun gift items. We’ve purchased countless of items here but my favorite things are our vintage style pink metal patio chairs. Love to go in and see all the new items they’re constantly getting in and visit the adorable baby chicks and the best store mascot ever, George the Rooster!!!

The staff went above and beyond to help me find a hardware piece for my antique hutch! Very friendly!

Awesome hardware store. A nice change of pace from wandering around Lowe’s and Home Depot for hours looking for the 1 item you need. The employees here are very friendly and willing to help you look for whatever you need. Lots of interesting products in this store that you won’t find in a typical hardware store. It definitely has a Austin vibe going on. Be sure to check out the Rooster they have in the store. When we were there he was crowing up a storm. Our son loved it.

This place is awesome. Davis is extremely helpful. Glad to have them in the neighborhood.

This local hardware store takes you back to the days before big-​box chains took over. The owners work here alongside the store’s pet rooster, George.
You won’t find six brands of every item here. Instead, you’ll find the core essentials of a hardware store, urban farming supplies, with a touch of farmer’s market unique items.
Perhaps your shopping list will look like:
1) Get a copy of my house key
2) Buy some organic ant deterrents
3) Local raspberry preserves
4) 3 new chicks (as in cute fuzzy baby chickens)
5) Organic dog treats
This is a great place to explore– it’s not so big that you’ll get lost, but it’s a nice variety of items, with a green slant. They also offer classes and workshops in the back left corner, stop in to learn about: gardening, chicken coop building, etc.

Great little hardware store. They carry an assortment of knick knacks and basic necessities for your home and garden. I shop here for garden supplies frequently. I went in today looking for a toad house and they didn’t have one. Someone on staff directed me to North Haven who did have some. They even told me about a great documentary on frogs and toads I could watch online. I love this place.

Great locatIon, but much higher prices than other hardware stores. Limited selection, never seem to have the right item because it is so small. Employees are hit and miss, they need better customer service training.

Unusual items amongst the usual items. Friendly folks. Looking for a gift? Take a look here, you’re sure to find something unique. Is that a rooster in the back crowing? Yep.

I have never felt more like being in Austin while in Dallas than when I visit the Gecko.
Very funky and much more than a hardware store.
Check out their gourmet stuff (Texas olive oils, amino acids, wine jellies, etc) and pet supplies (antlers to chew on, organic food, etc.)

I love this hardware store. It’s small enough that the employees know where everything is, and large enough that they had a great supply of merchandise. I love all the personal attention, and it’s a «fun» place to shop because I always find something unusual there. When I go there, I feel like they really want to help me. It has that «down home» feeling.

I LOVE Gecko! Everyone here is so friendly and helpful. I am newish to keeping chickens and I was so happy to find out they carry poultry supplies. My mother and I literally visited this place 5 or 6 times in 2 days! I was starting to feel like one of «those» customers but everybody was really sweet and welcomed us back each time lol. I purchased 2 chicks from them and both are so sweet and very healthy. They carry an array of gardening supplies to light bulbs. They also have a lot of cool artsy/​knick knack stuff. This is probably the BEST customer service I have EVER experienced and that is saying a lot considering I work retail! Thanks Gecko crew for being AWESOME!

What a truly awesome place. Well worth the hike. Very knowledgeable staff. Great emphasis on doing stuff in the garden with as much environmental sensitivity as possible. Looking at some changes to mosquito management at our house, so got advice that we are following.
We simply loved it.

This is a classic, small-​town hardware store. I fell in love immediately, and the love is true after shopping there.
The staff is extremely friendly, and if one person doesn’t know the answer they go get someone who does. They are patient with you, even if you’re not spending more than $ 20.
I love wandering around the store, because you never know what you’ll find here! A random selection of gifts and household goods to an excellent selection of gardening, outdoor, lawn care, and of course actual hardware and tools. Their hardware (nails, screws, handles, plumbing, etc) selection is far superior to a big box store (think: Lowe’s) and their prices are as good and a lot of times better.
It’s a bit of a drive for us, but we will continue to make the drive because of the amazing customer service and selection.

Love this place! Went their twice this weekend. For not being a large storefront they had a surprisingly large selection. From Weiner Dog salt and pepper shakers to plastic tubing by the foot. Every single staff person I spoke with was extremely helpful. One guy must have spent 20 minutes going through the store with me with a special project I had in mind… and he didn’t even mind referring me to other retailers for things they didn’t have, which is always the sign of outstanding customer service in my mind.

So happy to have the coolest hardware and gardening store in my neighborhood! They are knowledgeable, friendly, and easygoing. I discovered a trough planter, with a full garden inside, which solved my problem of trying to grow in 20 pots at my apt. Ahead of the trends, and have just what you wanted.

Amazing hardware store that has turned me from a hesitant consumer to a lifelong fan in just two visits. They have helped me find a new passion of keeping chickens.
Go and give them your business. It is well worth it.

Great addition to the neighborhood! Not your typical hardware store — and if you’re looking for a specific item — screw, stain color, whatever and want to run in/​run out, you may be better off @ Elliott’s or a big box. But if you want to have a great browse for something you didn’t know you needed while you’re buying what you came for, Gecko is wonderful. The front part of the store is almost like a gift shop — they have all sorts of knick knacks and cool lawn and garden stuff. In one back corner, they have a selection of baby chicks — mostly designer breeds, they may also have turkey chicks and ducklings. Great pet supplies — they carry bales of straw if you have outdoor chickens, rabbits, etc.
All sorts of other unique items, fun finds throughout the store.
